Ridiculously Wrong Shinies in Old Pokemon Games (Colosseum & XD)

Hey guys, TheSupremeRk9s here! Today we spotlight the ridiculous & hilariously wrong Shiny pokemon in older pokemon games -- very much specifically within the games Pokemon Colosseum & Pokemon XD). This is absolutely insane to me, and Idk if im just stupid or if this is actually interesting but what the heck i wanted to share it with you guys. Absolutely mad, I can't even imagine how they came up with these colors - but I'm glad they did! Enjoy the vid folks

imo they should make all pokemon have multiple variants of shinies. Like for example's sake, having a yellow Lucario, a red Lucario, and a black Lucario all exist within the same world.

Pre gen 6 shinies were determined by an algorithm which swapped palettes with the nearest colors that wouldn't mess with shading (hence why a lot of older shinies has certain patterns such as lime green and blue to pink). This algorithm also applied to the early 3d pokemon titles. There's been arguments that some shiny's palette's were deliberate pre-gen 6 (gyarados for example) but even then it is agreed that this is a rare case if it was what occurred. However, being 3d models and not the traditional sprites, they came with their own palette, and the algorithm worked with that instead, hence the major differences in quite a few shinies in stadium 2, colosseum and XD. However, starting from gen 6 they changed this and now manually create the shinies for the 3d models.

No shinies were ever manually decided (minus the arguably "deliberate" ones), and really until XY none of the shinies were manually created by gamefreak. They all were essentially randomly generated pre-gen 6, and stayed mostly the same in every 2d generation after 2 minus a few changes due to few palette changes over the years.

Nope, this happened for all gens pre gen 6. The prevailing patterns of similar shinies which happened BECAUSE of these algorithms (blue to pink, lime green, etc) still occurred gen 3-5

Some of them look better, like Rattata, the Tentacool line, Gengar (was actually my rough estimate of what one would look like when I caught my shiny Gastly in Diamond back before I had the Internet.), Voltorb, Exeggutor, the Cyndaquil line (those green/blue flames would be amazing.), Scizor, Suicune (THUNDERCLOUD!) etc.

I don’t know if anyone posted the explanation, but before gen 6 and such, they used a pallet generator toner the shinies. The thing is, they did that for these Games as well. Because it was on a GameCube, the colors were very different than the game boy advance. Often 2D didn’t translate into 3D well for GameCube things.

I also feel like his criticisms were a bit too negative. He didn't really mention all that many shinies he thought looked good, or seemed interesting; And I know it's pretty silly of me to point that out on a video called "Ridiculously wrong shinies" but Gale of Darkness and Colosseum are hardly talked about in the Pokemon community, so I was hoping for a more well rounded video.

This was such a fun video to watch. I love these shinies so much. It's like they tried to recolor things correctly with a good number of them, but then with the others they just tossed those filters on all of the textures without even paying attention to what parts they were filtering at the last second, making a lot of the ugly shinies with even tinted eyes that we see here. I doubt they expected anyone to see most of these!!! Great vid, and I'm glad that the world is getting to see these. Also thanks for the shoutout!

Shinies have been changing for years, Charizard was Purple before they changed him to Black, butterfree was Pink in Gold and Silver, plus they wasnt Gamefreak games so theyre allowed to have theyre own spin on things

A couple ironies here. First of which quite a number of shinies you thought were correct were still indeed inaccurate (Tangela's "shoes" don't turn blue and neither do Absol's claws to name a couple). And secondly, regarding the sheer laziness of the game itself, roughly a third weren't changed whatsoever.

I love how the shiny Sneasel in Colosseum uses the retconned Gen 2 G/S colour palette for Sneasel, brown and green. The brown/green palette looks much better than the absolutely horrendous pink/yellow shiny palettes they use now.

Magcargo isn't that wrong, it used to look like this in Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal. Just a reminder Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire came out the november 21rst 2002 and Pokémon Colosseum came out just a year later the 21 november 2003. They had to create the 3D models for each pokémons, including the special forms (Unown, Castform etc), so according to this I guess they started to create the 3D models before gen 3 came out and they based the color choices on the gen 2 (because it would waste time to change the shinies again). They also had to program a lot of stuff beside the 3D models.

Here is what presumably happened. Likely story is that for some drastically different shinies (like charizard) they actually made a separate palette, however for more most other shinies rather than waste space on multiple full palettes they probably added tints of the general shiny's true colors.

I think you pretty much called it. Most of these look like they just lazily put a color filter over the regular textures. The sad part is, someone got paid to do these wrong. Someone else probably got paid to quality check it and didn't know or care as well. I guess they just figured no one will get shiny pokemon on here so why bother.

Christopher Pirtle That is exactly the point. In XD, all pokemon asides the 9 wild pokemon (and a few other exceptions) can't be shiny. In coloseum, the shadow pokemon can be shiny, but that is entirely dependant on beating the 1/8192 odds twice, due to the shadow mons trainer having to have a matching I.D number. In short, no they did not expect anyone to find shinies in these games.

technically, you can make your own shinies in pokemon stadiums 1 and 2. By giving them specific names, their models will have some slight changes to their pallete. Honestly, I wish they kept this little mechanic in the original games.

I feel like the green on sneasel was intentional, because it mirrors the little palette mistake that the original gold and silver had. instead of blue and pink, it was brown and green for some inexplicable reason
