Honestly, Gengar is less of a case of the shiny changing, but more the regular palette changing. Gengar used to be much brighter so the gray shiny stood out more, but now that Gengar is almost black, a dark gray isn't much different. The shiny itself never really changed at all.

It's less the brightness and more the hue and then the saturation Up until HGSS the normal gengar had a red toned purple and the shiny had a blue toned purple, and then after that game they were both cool toned purples

@@maganhassan2627 True, but the anime has been making a few weird design choices since Journeys to make some parts more "video-game accurate" (Pokémon Go eggs, Dawn and Piplup, etc.). I think that Ash's Gengar just shows that game-accurate colored Gengar exist in the anime world too.

@@ribbodile6225 yeah, they also changed Lt. Surge's absolutely superior anime design with the game design, (but they made Erika less of an eye-strain inducing girl so maybe it wasn't so bad for her?) If they wanted to be more game accurate, in my opinion it should've made the characters have the same body and face but just change their clothes to their most modern incarnations.

Its kinda interesting that it wasnt really the shiny itself that changed for Gengar and it was more the base color of it, the darker purple they went with in gen 6 onwards just kinda makes what was a pretty decent shiny almost indistinguishable

One thing about Gengar's shiny that I wish stayed is in Pokemon battle revolution where instead of being slightly duller it went full on black, which made its eye's pop out more and made it way more noticeable.

I don't know if it really counts as the shinies themselves changing, but Gen 9's retexturing of a bunch of Pokemon really improved a lot of them Shiny Scizor and Shiny Forretress went from not-that-great to some of the best shinies ever just by getting a metallic sheen.

This is just a theory but perhaps Clafairy and Clefable's shiny were changed for the same reason that Pikachu and Raichu had such underwhelming shinies - maybe they thought that Clefairy could still be seen as some kind of mascot so they took the algorithm generated shiny and turned it into a more subtle one.

In gen 3, shiny Absol had a nice chocolate brown face. For some reason, it got a little redder in gens 4-5 and even more in gens 6-7. It's now so red that it looks sunburnt. Would be less of an issue if Absol wasn't a pain to hunt for in RSE.

With Gengar, I don't think it's an issue with the shiny getting worse. I think is more of an issue with its normal colors creeping closer and closer to its shiny colors.

Yeah, people can be so critical of green and yellow shinies, but I really don’t think they’re bad, at least overall. It’s just that there’s an unfortunate amount of them that use the worst possible greens and yellows. Just adjust the shade and they can look muuuuch better. Like the Espeon you mentioned. The minty color looks soooo much better than that eye burning neon lime green. Like, Espeon’s shiny literally hurts my eyes and becomes hard to discern. It becomes just a blob of painfully bright green. Green and yellow shinies are sorta hit or miss for me, as are pink ones, but the misses are pretty consistently just because of terrible shade choice. I think they can be a bit harder to make work and get that right shade, but when they do they’re fantastic!

Fun fact about shiny Rapidash, it’s current shiny is now a mix between its Gen 2 and Gen 3 onwards shinies. The change came about in PLA where they made shiny Rapidash’s fire more of a gray purple.

I always figured that Magearna's shiny was same as its regular color in its standard form is because the paint had worn off over time; since that's kind of its whole gimmick. It seemed like an actual moment of the Pokemon Company paying attention to it's own lore.

I had no idea that I had encountered a shiny Gastly until my Larvesta twice refused to fight it! Larvesta did the little sweating gesture and didn't budge, and it was right next to Gastly so it wasn't like it couldn't reach. So I engaged it in battle and yep, shiny!

Well... even normal pokemon changed colors a bit. They always do that so they fit to the environment better. So they wouldn't stand out too much looking like from a different game. It is like in league of legends whenever the map gets upgraded they fix the colors of all champions, including their skins.

Dragonite is another shiny that got worse. In GSC, it was a pale, silvery green with vibrant purple wings. It looked really unique and really kind of magical. Now, it's shiny looks like Puff the Magic Dragon. I wish they would change it back.

Gengar is actually interesting because its not actually the shiny that got closer to the regular form, but the regular form losing its vibrant purple for a more muted eerie purple. So arguably, Gengar's shiny is totally fine, and should get its better regular color back.

the nidoran (male and female) are also odd, since on the first two stages they fittingly swap the colors, with the male line being blue-ish, and the female pink-ish but the idea falls down on the final stage, with while Nidoking keep being blue-ish but Nidoqueen is green-ish.

One Shiny I believe would be awesome is if they made Houndoom a deep red color. The dark blue works... ~decently~ well, but come on, everybody knows that red would be a very fitting Shiny coloration for what is basically the Hell Hound Pokémon. But I guess that GameFreak or Nintendo thought that that red color would be referencing the Devil, and hell no were they gonna implement such a reference in a kids' game!
