Craig! I am a new subscriber and almost never leave comments, but I just HAD to for this one! I'm from Boston and met a British guy in Chiang Mai in the fall of 2015. After building up a bit of confidence by motorbiking up Doi Suthep, we did the Mae Hong Son loop together. Your video brought back so many vivid memories -- the beautiful countryside, the shock of Pai after the first few days on the road, the unexpected kindness of some of the locals, situations that tested our mettle. I teared up a bit watching it! After doing the loop, the guy and I traveled around parts of Thailand and Vietnam, then on to different parts of the world together. This past July we tied the knot! It was a pleasure to see how you put your own spin on the journey and to get to see the trip in high def. Happy and safe travels to you! It's a vast and small world, so maybe we'll see you on the road! x

Excellent video! Very high production quality all around. I also did the Mae Hong Son loop, minus the detour to Ban Rak Thai, in 4 days, late January 2019. Many wonderful memories. For those who'd also like to do it, I have a few suggestions: Get an International Drivers License. I got mine at AAA (US automobile association), I think it was $20. Show it and your driver's license to the police and you shouldn't have a problem. I have a motorcycle operator's license, and made sure that the International license included motorcycle qualification. I wouldn't recommend learning to ride a motorcycle or scooter on the Loop: Thai drivers are fast, there is lots of traffic on the main roads including heavy trucks and buses, and the roads are good but only 2 lane. In the US, take the free MSF introductory safety class. In most states you'll earn your motorcycle operator's license at the end, and learn how to ride safely. West of Hot (that's a town, not an adjective, although it would be fitting) is Ob Luang National Park. In the park are cave drawings made 2500 to 3000 years ago. Just walk right up to them. They really ought to be in a museum, but instead they're in their original location. Although it doesn't rain in northern Thailand in the early months of the year, beware that the road surface can still be slick, from months of vehicles passing over it. I took a spill on my bike going around a sharp turn just outside Pai due to very slick road conditions. Completely unexpected.

Utah videos had expletives that would have been great bleeped out so kids can enjoy and learn from your awesome filming talents. Good video! I rode the Mae Hong Son from Hua Hin through Chiang Rai and south back in May 2019. A 3000 km trip over 8 days. Going from Mae Sot up northward through Mae Sarawan, Mae Hong Son and to Pai is just pure magic. I strongly recommend it. I rode a 750cc Honda X-ADV though and can imagine riding a scooter on the same roads was a more tiring experience I will certainly do it again, but take my time more than I did on the first trip. Lots of great nature to experience.
