Why? There are no passenger stations If you're going from NYC to San Francisco. . Faster and cheaper by air. Japan is compact.... Distances are not like the US or Canada.. AMTRAK is a money loser. If capitalists ain't forking out cash then it's a loser. If government is involved then it's a loser. A train from San Diego to San Francisco would take 8hrs. A plane about 1 hr..

Let me clarify why the seats are only on one side. Simply put it's because the line mainly runs with the sea to its east/south. So in order to attain good views for both passengers, JR East placed the seats to the right. Since this train's selling point is it's views you wouldn't want to be staring at the side of a cliff for the whole time, would you?
@CloudLilac13 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you brought this up. I think most people don’t know that these seats can also be swiveled around 180° by train staff when the train travels back in the opposite direction. This way, both seats can get optimal seaside views traveling to or away from Tokyo.
@brianb85163 жыл бұрын

For that to work the train's orientation also cannot change (e.g. if the car at the end of the train that points towards Tokyo is now changed to face towards Izu instead, & vice-versa for the car @ the other end of the train), which would happen if the train entered a siding/depot that's perpendicular to the line (& accessible from both directions of travel along the line) & did a "3-point turn" there
