That's something that I've always loved about English disciplines, it seems for the most part they wait to work the horse til they're much older, and more grown, and then take it very slow for a few years and can compete well into their late teens, whereas western riding, the colts are broken and competing heavily by the time they're 2-3 years, and then by the time they're 6-7, they're retired. I'm not saying all people on either side do this, but it's what usually happens. I was always envious of those who grew up in areas where English riding was common, but thankful that my grandma had plenty of horse sense and taught me as well as she could. Tho she did often expect me to just "know" things without being taut them sometimes. DX

@@itsjustautumn7413 even tho we rode western, I didn't even use a saddle til after I got a full-sized horse. My shetland Sunshine and I were very happy bareback and with just a hackamore. Only went with a saddle after cause I'm rather short, and I needed a stirrup for actually getting on in the middle of nowhere XD that's the one good thing about where I grew up, I could get on the pony (and then horse) and be gone for hours at a time XD we trained our young horses for sure, but it was just basic stuff and experience with the world until they were 3. Then they got introduced to the saddle (not ridden, tho we would use our hands to put pressure on the stirrups) and would get pony'd around so they could get used to being out and about, but not long outings, and nothing fast paced. Then they'd get a break til winter was over and just get regular daily handling and leading, with a few rides in the pen and up and down our little dirt road on the farm, maybe 15 mins at most, before going to regular rides at 5. We took our time even then, because the area definitely wasn't flat, and we didn't want to strain them or wear them out. Especially as we lived on a hill, so the end of the ride home was always up a steep grade DX the slower starts later in life definitely make a huge difference on the health of a horse, both physically and mentally. Even at that age, they're very much babies and have young, impressionable minds. Her Arabian stallion wasn't finished growing till he was about 7 yrs, and the extra time definitely helped him out. People are always so worried about being able to "Do" things with their horses, but honestly there's plenty to do and introduce them to from the ground, you don't have to be in a saddle to take your horse of the property and expose them to new things. Lead them around the places you want to ride someday. Get them introduced to water crossings, and bridges. To loud traffic and busy streets. We'd frequently just put a lead rope on and go for walks and hikes. Honestly, I think it's better that way, there's not so many new things all at once. You're not introducing riding and reigns on top of scary new places and things, and they spook less at new stuff, I've found

Friesians aren't "lazy," but their natural temperament is relaxed compared to what we think of as hot-blooded breeds, and this can make them seem less sensitive. But many regard this as a feature--Friesians tend to be a quieter, more chill breed, and that can be good for less experienced rider or for using them in situations that might be challenging for a more sensitive breed . I used to train Arabians, which are naturally very sensitive. For riders that are not used to that sensitivity and for less experienced riders, their naturally quick responsiveness can often seem like a problem. In a way, it's all what you're used to working with.

Hi Matt, just a little history of Friesians. They were ridden to war in Roman times and later used by knights in armour.They were a cold blood working horse that did all the heavy work , such as plowing and pulling heavy loads. During the 18th century the mercantile class were becoming very rich and were after beautiful high stepping horses for their new carriages. The Friesians were beautiful, high stepping but too heavy, so they were crossed with Andalusians. So now there were two breeding strains, the heavy cold blood working horse and the lighter and finer carriage horse. As time went on, tractors replaced farm horses and the carriage horses were replaced by cars. During the WW11 there was no fuel for cars or tractors and only three Friesian stallions left in Europe. Without the big horses to again pull ploughs and machinery, the Dutch and others would have starved to death. The breed was virtually extinct. Breeders put these stallions to any big mare they could find. I believe there is a line of chestnut friesians in the stud book that comes from this period. As time went on and circumstances changed, these big horses were again crossed with Andalusians to breed the modern Friesian riding horse. The history of the Friesian is the history of Europe.

@@ghoststride6536 remember many people did not read or write 900yrs ago so there is no history that us accurate about horses and many other things. Only official things like wealthy classes, military events, who was king were recorded in much of Europe not farming things. So official breed records only cover more recent times. This does not mean that the breed started then. It is no doubt thousands of years older.

The very last horse I have ridden was a Friesian stallion. He "took care" of me for the entire time = If he felt my weight shift he would adjust his gait to accommodate my balance. I had driven horses rather than ridden because of arthritis and this smooth gaited big boy gave me the ride of a lifetime even though we were in an arena the entire time!

Wow that’s such a nice story thanks for sharing. It seems Friesians are very intuitive and seem to want to please their riders. They don’t spook easy but have a somewhat restrained energy. When they are asked to move they will accommodate. Too bad they have become so expensive that only wealthy people can afford to have one. That and the fact they don’t live as long as other breeds of horse and they’re so expensive it makes it hard for the average person to own one.

Yes, you need to contact Stal G and Yvonne. They have mostly female horses, but sometimes they have males. I love Friesian horses and Matt looks great. Jesse would also look great on one! Plus you talked about inbreeding. That is why there is such a strict studbook. They keep a very close eye on it. That is why if you are looking to buy a Friesian, you should go to a reputable seller like Stal G who is very very careful and uses the studbook. Rein who owns Stal G and Yvonne who works there are very very knowledgeable about it. The other people who work there are all terrific and know what they are doing!

We live in Portugal and have five Friesians at home, training some of them for Dressage competitions. They are not lazy, you just need to find the right "buttons". You see a lot of people riding them heavy on the hands, the opposite is what works in our experience - keep them light in the contact and give them space, so they can actively work from behind. The canter can be more challenging, but once they build their strength they are wonderful horses to work with!

Friesians need to learn to stop moving their legs and start using their backs. Once you get that they feel pretty good but they are the spookiest horses.

I remember I took care for half a year of a 22 yr old Friesian, not only was she my best friend in no time, she was so damn smart and when u rode her u can see that her trot was very elegant and prancing. She looked so beautiful even walking. They’re the best ❤️ - I had a small breathing issue, suddenly during a canter I had a moment where I felt like I couldn’t breathe n since then I’m not the best at cantering and she recognized it once and stopped w out me pulling cuz I was too focused on getting air. she was older than me she took good care of me.

A lady l know who suffered with asthma went riding one day and forgot her inhaler. She started to have feel unwell and leaned forward with her arms around the horses neck, he calmly walked back to the farm with her barely conscious. She was lucky as she was having an asthma attack and he her got back just in time.

I noticed how much this Friesian moves an ear back towards the rider, many times in a minute; i saw it in the September hacking video too; whereas in that video Emporio was steadfastly ears to the front for most of the ride. The frequent ear flick gives me the impression that Wybren is always listening and tuned in to his rider, ready and anticipating the riders voice and next direction. So aware and so attentive! When Matt came to a halt just before dismounting, it was "both ears back", as if preparing for whatever would happen next. It's a lovely trait to see, and no wonder Maureen feels a special bond with this animal who appears so inclined to align its awareness to her and engage with her intentions.

Regarding the mites and itching on the feet, I am in Australia and had to treat a pony with severe "Queensland itch" in the mane tail and rump, which nobody else could cure. I washed the area every day, and fleshed out and juiced fresh Aloe Vera leaves and drenched the areas three times a day with the juice. The pony was white with black skin, with the white coat rubbed off in large patches due to the pony constantly rubbing to ease the itch. The Aloe Vera cleared up the rash and the white coat grew back in a couple of weeks of treatment with the fresh daily Aloe vera. It must be cut fresh on the day, not bottled or otherwise. Great success for the pony. Thought you may be interested. Beautiful horse. 👍❤️❤️

Thanks for the suggestion; I'll file it in case I'm ever--God forbid--in that situation again: Nevada mustang a couple decades ago, $1000s in vet bills and even a move to a desert climate (symptoms receded for about a year), but we were never fully successful. Hope followed by frustration, year after year. It's soul-draining to have a horse you can't help to health & well-being.

The inbreeding issue was due to the fact that this breed of horse was almost gone! Friesian breeders are very aware and careful of bloodlines now. I have never had more health issues with my Friesians than any other horse. And the UNBELIEVABLE BEAUTY is worth anything you have to deal with!!! Haha hands down the most stunning horse on earth...in my opinion.

It is frightening how close we came to losing the breed at the change of the 19th and 20th Centuries. The current breed is descended from only 3 stallions at the end of the 19th Century, which is definitely not a stable base. Fortunately, breeders worked very hard to bring the Friesian back; and the world now has a highly intelligent and very calm riding or carriage horse.

Friesians were originally bred to be war horses, to carry men in armor. The two I have ridden were wonderful, calm, and giving. I would compare the ride to that of a draft cross one of my friends owns.

These ancestors of the modern Friesians were used in medieval times to carry knights to battle. In the 12th and 13th centuries, some eastern horses of crusaders were mated with Friesian stock. During the 16th and 17th centuries, when the Netherlands were briefly linked with Spain, there was less demand for heavy war horses, as battle arms changed and became lighter. Andalusian horses were crossbred with Friesians, producing a lighter horse. So the Friserian we know today, arent the same as the origins

I had a wonderful Friesian Percheron cross Mare (Big Mama ~ Alienor on Facebook) that was so calm, honest and willing to please. We did Medieval Tournaments and some jousting. She was also my lesson horse in teaching Baroque Riding and Mounted Archery. She always had a level head- until she heard the sounds of armor and swords clashing. She Wanted to ride into battle and Be On the battle field. Most of the mounts would balk and spin around- She just wanted to Wade us into the thick of battle. They could set off Cannons- and she wouldnt even flinch. Oh how I miss that mare.

My go to breed is off track thoroughbreds, but I've worked and ridden Friesian horses occasionally in the past. The difference between the breeds is like night and day. I would never say a Frisian doesn't have a motor, because they do, it's like a huge 4 wheel drive truck vs a sports car. Both have the power, but the build distributes the power differently. I still gravitate to the thoroughbred due to the versatility, but at some point will add a Friesian for some more focal work. Plus I love their temperment.

I just love this horse! He's obviously stunning but his character is also so incredible.. He has such a sweet nature and the most amazing eyes. Maureen is a very lucky lady with this handsome man! I would love to see her ride Emporio some time because I think she will understand him and his way of moving very well. And Matt... You should definitely go look for a Frisian stallion!!! I love this breed- Riding to the inside leg, using the outside rein to support is so wonderful on them. The Baroque style of riding is so Lovely with them as well. The friesian breed was almost gone. So the genealogical tree was once very narrow. Trough good breed management it is getting better and better. In 1913 there where just 3 registed stallion (500 marres), luckely there where also some stallion foals aswell. And with alot off hard we have the beautiful breed we see today!!

@@toneenorman2135 At the end of the 19th beginning of the 20th century, the Friesian horse had to compete with the heavy horse breeds. The dancing 'show horses' of the peasantry were less suitable for the heavy work. The farmers eventually switched to the heavier breeds or crossed the Friesian horse with these breeds. This almost killed the Friesian breed.

I have a Friesian 19yr old mare 3/4 and 1/4 standard breed. I’m in Queensland and found Cinda has never had leg issues or skin issues only had choke once because of some idiot feeding her straw. I find they will do anything for you if there is a connection they don’t like too much pressure they love praise oh yes and food and they are slow starters but beautiful temperaments. Best horse I’ve ever had ! I also have half Friesian and Knabstupper he’s 14 months can’t wait to break him in. You look good on him Matt 🇦🇺 💕👍ps. They do tend to pace when they are younger and learning .

continued: the series is about a Stable of about 28 horses: foals, 1,2,3 year olds , Mares and stallions. The stable manager is Yvonne, the owner Reins. The mares are huge. Interesting ways of qualifying the mares and stallions used in breeding as well as in sales. The stable is in Friesiesland-somewhere. I have not observed any of the myths you mentioned.

Never had the pleasure of riding a Friesian, but every Friesian I encountered, from foal to famous stallion, each one was incredibly intelligent and attentive. From this video, no doubt you will enjoy you future Friesian and helping this amazing breed that has gain flack. Intelligent horses need less fuzz or reactive movements since they anticipate and in the case of Friesians, they also try to connect with the human they interact with. Lazy is definitely not the right word. Also in other animal breeds (dogs to name one) there are 'lazy' or 'stubborn' breeds, until you discover their magnificent qualities. Human traits ; The best is not recognized yet.

The Friesian is the most majestic of horses, true Royalty! Their loving docile nature shouldn't be mistaken for anything but charming.... it's hard to believe that they were commonly used as farm animals once long ago 🤦 A Prince pulling a plow lols... So great to see Matt riding a beautiful black Friesian stallion. I said weeks ago since you live in the Netherlands, you NEED to get a Friesian. I also, like many others here, would suggest a meeting with Stal Goengamaiden with Rein and Yvonne. They are very professional and well educated on Friesians and they are breeders of high quality horses. IMHO, it seems Stal G doesn’t have stallions right now that would be big enough for Matt, seems like he would need a horse that is at least 16.2 hands since he is so tall himself. Maybe Stal Okkemma which seems to have many stallions for sale all the time? Well I am hopeful that Matt will do further research and decide to add one to his herd. Over the past couple of decades (or longer, it's been awhile. LOL), Friesians have been bred to be more of a sport horse type as opposed to the draft horses they were originally bred for. They used to have a heavier build and now are much more refined in their entire physical conformation. I've always loved the breed and I'm beyond jealous that Matt got to live out my horsey dream... riding a Friesian stallion. Dream horse (I'd take a mare too, I'm not THAT picky ;) ). Absolute equine fantasy.

It’s good for the breed to be seen as a nice dressage horse too. Too many people have stereotype opinions about friesians. Matt! Just love this! His demeanor with"his girl" pretty special, as he keeps checking in with HER! Having boarded with a gal that had 6 Frisans here in America, on her private facility, I know how "Carriage Horse " built they are. Her discipline dressage, thier's -upright pulling; very interesting to see trainers try to switch where the engine is- naturally! "Lazy "isn't a term I EVER saw in her 6 horses. " Dolce", her favorite, for the only reason of relaxed demeanor...but Lazy- never! He kept up with my TBmare easily , on trail rides and was all in for dressage clinics . Having ridden him, I had to release my posting! (Her's were all top registry & flown into America ). 😄 bandaging... here that's injury related. We use "Leg wraps" with polo wraps or leg guards.

I love Friesians too! I had the chance to ride my best friends talented friesian. Really a super sweet loyal horse, who always wanted to work for you. He certainly wasn’t lazy and he loves to ride. The owner rode with him successfully in the Z dressage. He did canter pirouettes and flying changes. He always give me that powerful horse feeling and he was very stunning as well!

I love Friesians!! We had two wonderful Friesian brothers at our riding school, Django and Diego! They were so kind and gorgeous, and they walked with a wonderful spring in their step, smooth and bouncy. The only thing, which made them even more endearing, was that they had been cart horses and one always wanted to ride next to the other even in riding school 🥰 - that's true brothers' love 🥰❤❤! Thank you for bringing animal communication to the awareness of people in such a kind, sensitive and appreciative manner, Matt ❤❤!! I've taken a lot of courses and know it works ❤❤

Since i've only owned one friesian, i don't think i'm an expert or anything, but if i look at mine and the other friesians at the stable i haven't noticed they have a lot of health issues.

Unfortunately, they do indeed have several health conditions (likely with an inherited genetic factor) due to a population bottleneck that occurred during WW1. They have a shorter average life span than most breeds as well, though some of that is to be expected due to their size. That being said, many many Friesians do live long happy lives when well cared for and with a healthy family tree!

I have to finally comment, as I watch your videos from time to time.. I love this stallion. I fell in love with Friesians a very long time ago. He is so beautiful. That is not to say that Matt's stallion is not, he's a stunner as well. But I just had to say, just watching Matt enjoy this lovely was heartwarming. And I love the gentle way Matt and friends respect, love and care for their horses. It is nice to see that they truly love their animals. So many see these big hearted creatures as just commodities. I also wanted to let Maureen know I LOVE her hair.. it is so pretty, all those curls and the length, she almost matches her horse :) And when she said "Matt, do you want a Friesian?" I was saying "I know I do" :) Loved the videos of you two, you guys should definitely consider doing more if schedules allow. I have the joy of exercising a 3 yr old Fresian stallion named Amadan who is an absolute sweetie. I am nickered at and nuzzled. He knows I keep a cut-up apple in the left pocket of my jacket and he tries to pick my pocket. Riding him gives me a good workout as well. When I first started riding him I had to adjust my riding style. But I try to return all the affection he shows me with apple slices, scratches behind the ears and long brushings. Fortunately his dam is Irish and his sire is American so he seems to be doing well.

I'd like to interject here if I could, there is a KZbin channel by the name of Friesian Horses where Yvonne narrates the videos and it's all about the breed. They are also located in the Netherlands. She owns a Friesian mare by the name of Queen Uniek. The stall where she keeps the mare is known as Stal G. The owner's name is Rein. Uniek is a Kroon Sport mare and she's around 16 years old and has some arthritis which is being treated. And she also has special shoes which minimize the pain with meds. Yvonne takes very good care of her mare. Her mare also brought up an orphan WKPS colt "Rising Star". Just fyi in case you want to know a little more about the breed.

And about time too! I told you years ago to have a go! The higher the knee action in these breeds the bumpier the canter. This Friesian stallion doesn’t have a huge high knee action so you can sit comfortably on him in canter. My Friesian is a Premie 1, 17 hands. If you do buy one, get a premie 2 or 1 not a premie 3
