Hello stranger... Let me pass on my experience with towing and garden tractors. I once had a house with a giant granite outcropping right behind the house. Anytime it looked like marital bliss was about to turn into an argument I would go outside and try to break chunks off that rock. During that period of my life, I owned a Murray Garden tractor and we welded up a trailer with a ball hitch receiver so I could haul cut firewood around the palace. One day I backed the trailer up to the granite frustration breaker and rolled a large chunk of stone into the trailer. This lifted the rear wheels slightly, but the back of the trailer was against the big rock, so no harm done. Sitting in the seat of the monster tractor was enough weight to give the Murray back tires contact with solid ground. Now would probably be a good time to mention, from the granite rock to the back of my yard was all downhill, and a pretty steep gorge that I intended to eventually fill with large chunks of granite. In any case, as the rear of the trailer broke free of the granite, the several hundred pound rock in the trailer shifted slightly backwards. This in turn raised the now welded on ball receiver way up in the air and since it was locked and latched it also picked up the rear of the tractor. 10 minutes prior to this would have been an excellent time to consider if the rear tractor wheels lost contact with mother earth, I would also lose all braking ability. So, with my wife watching from the deck, this upside down letter V consisting of a red Murray, me, a silver trailer and a very large rock were all headed for a rock filled gorge. Not seeing any better option, I turned the steering wheel as far as I could which in turn caused the tractor, trailer, rock and me to take flight in the general direction of the gorge. When I came to a stop, the Murray was along side of me still running but upside down. I reached over and shut it off. In the silence I suddenly noticed I could hear a very loud siren. I found that funny until I realized it was not a siren but my wife screaming for at least 2 minutes without stopping to breathe. I tried to disconnect the trailer from the Murray, but the ball end receiver was now twisted like a pretzel around the ball. Had we not welded it, I might have been able to unbolt it. Actually, Revision 2 of the tongue was about 4 inches shorter and did have a bolted on receiver. The rock?? Oh, that was still in the yard but on that day I didn't really care. I did manage to get the Murray back on it's wheels after some creative hacksaw work on the tongue. I also had one more incident hauling firewood up a country road where I kept losing traction on the uphill climb and thought the entire show may go backwards down the road with no brakes but that is a different story. Bottom line, don't tow anything but a small yard cart with your pretend tractor.

Haha wow that is a wild story. I am glad you are ok. My favorite part is that you didn’t give up and kept towing with the old girl. I am putting together a towing video and this is a great point. I think adding weight is the most important factor when towing with a mower. Thanks for the story

I just ordered a gas powered log splitter and I don't have a (real) tractor, but I do have a Scotts 20 HP Lawn Tractor built by John Deere. I just ordered the parts and I'm quite certain it will do the job since the log splitter only weighs 429 lbs. as opposed to your boat which you said weighs 5000 lbs. Thank you for this video.

I'm looking at getting the John Deere S240 in the spring and was wondering how I can put a hitch to pull my 16 foot skiff in the yard, Thank you

Glad it helped, they actually work really good for moving stuff around the yard since they are so short.

Check out my latest videos. You may want to also upgrade to some Big Bite tires to get better traction

For extra support, I would put a piece of flat stock behind the mounting plate

I like it. I imagine some of those plates are thinner than others. The one on this x320 is plenty stout so far.

Any idea what the hitch weight is? That’s 5000 lb boat? I have a 3500 pound camper with a 300-325 lb hitch weight and an x320. Wondering how it would do to move around the yard?

Don’t know till ya try. Will need to keep the deck on though and maybe add some extra weight on the front. The hitch will handle it, not sure about the mower

It was a lot of fun. I really thought she would pull my boat. Expect a new video with some mods to my little pull tractor. Is a whole thing now just to see if I can.

If one pulls anything more than a garden cart on a regular basis the standard K46 transmission on the average yard tractor will grenade itself. If pulling firewood or other weights on needs either a K58 or larger transmission. The Peerless 5 /6 speed gear transmission is stout, as well it's a 3 speed with a 2 speed range selector.

@@joecrumpler I pull fire wood all the time with my D155 without any issues in 250 hours of use…and I have a huge hill that I have to climb every time I need to mow or even pull stuff in my little wagon. Bigger will be definitely much better …but so far I managed with my 46K …yes I abuse it without even changing the oil so far…but still works without any issues so far….a little monster I should say for what I paid. For an owner with no hills,it will probably last 500 hours or more without doing major repairs.

Do they make a hitch that could go on the front?

Haha I am sure you can make something work. Just have to be creative. No I don’t think they make something specific for the front. Check out my latest “tow rig” video for some giggles.

DO NOT EVER HITCH ANYTHING TO A TRACTOR ABOVE THE REAR AXLE, IT WILL FLIP OVER BACKWARDS ON A HARD PULL.
