As far as the huge piles of trash, here in Vegas it is what is left over after a tent encampment moves. It gets too trashy for even them and they just move to another location. Usually, 100 yards away. Until the new location gets too trashy. Nobody thinks to dispose of their trash as they go. It seems easier than moving all their tents, coolers, stolen bicycles etc.

If you know how to read the graffiti it will tell you where you are, in regards to gangs and who is in the area. you should kind of know what gangs are in what city's but its block to block, each block different gangs, could be a blood neighborhood right next to a crip area
