A Word on Westerns

A Word on Westerns

Күн бұрын

A funny and articulate Bad Guy, Patrick Kilpatrick was born August 20, and has appeared in over 170 films, usually menacing the likes of Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Steven Seagal, to name only a few. In person, he's charming!
Patrick's resume is filled with memorable roles, including several popular westerns. In 1986’s "Louis L'Amour's Quick and the Dead" (not to be confused with the Sam Rami/Sharon Stone film), Patrick was cast as an American Indian tracking down Sam Elliott. The horse he rode, a Palomino named "Trigger," made a huge impression on the '6' 2" performer. Find out why Patrick thinks horses may be smarter than actors as he joins A WORD ON WESTERNS' producer host, Rob Word, for a conversation about his work in the Western genre.
More horseback riding outlaw roles followed for Patrick in two classic Tom Selleck films. “Last Stand at Saber River” amzn.to/3ONlNJx (1997) co-starred David and Keith Carradine, Suzy Amis and Haley Joel Osment, and “Crossfire Trail” amzn.to/3KO8JCE (2001) directed by “Lonesome Dove’s” Simon Wincer and co-starring Virginia Madsen, Wilford Brimley, Barry Corbin, Rex Linn, William Sanderson, Marshall Teague, Brad Johnson and Mark Harmon. Patrick is one of the gunfighters hired by Harmon tasked with running stranger Selleck out of town.
In writer-director Walter Hill’s Depression-era remake of Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo,” "Last Man Standing," amzn.to/44AVDjr Willis stars as the drifting gunslinger who sets two warring factions, Irish and Italian mafia, against one another in a ghost town. Sounds kinda like "Fistful of Dollars," doesn't it? Patrick, of course, is a gun toting employee. The film was shot on the legendary western location, Melody Ranch.
This conversation with Patrick was shot inside the Autry Museum’s Wells Fargo Theater, Jan 17, 2017. That day, we had lost audio for our interviews and only had (barely) passable audio from our camera microphones. Due to the poor audio, only a 4 minute segment of Patrick’s conversation was ever aired on A WORD ON WESTERNS. A very, very frustrating experience! But, in the five years since this interview was done, advances in AI (Artificial Intelligence) have come to our aid and RJ has been able to create an audio track that has enabled us to finally post Patrick’s complete interview. There's only a slight echo. I’d forgotten how much fun Patrick was.
This episode of AWOW is posted on Aug 20th. Happy birthday, Big Guy! Hope you enjoy the show...finally.

Among actors, the best villains are not only nearly always the best actors and the most interesting on screen, but ironically the most humorous and nicest people in life. Patrick is certainly another example of that. Articulate, bright, interesting, insightful and funny guy. A most enjoyable interview.

In Last Man Standing, Bruce Willis and Walter Hill paid homage to Henry Fonda and John Ford with Bruce Willis leaning on a chair on the veranda exactly like Henry did in that iconic shot in My Darling Clementine! Every movie Walter makes is definitely a Western. Patrick Kilpatrick really is a great, underrated actor. He was even in Remo Williams with Fred Ward, an underrated movie as well. Thanks for the interview, Rob!

Gotta love how a segment was dedicated to horses before the discussion turned to acting. Patrick has definitely worked with some of the best Tom Selleck, Sam Elliot, Bruce Willis and more even loved the shout out to Alan Rickman one of the best villains in the business. Thanks for these programs which highlight the people and yes some times the horses who have made this all possible. Thanks Rob.

Great video and especially the part about how smart the horses are. One of the horses that came to mind was, I believe was named Smokey, the horse Lee Marvin rode in Cat Ballou. The scene near the end of the film with a drunken Lee Marvin sitting on Smokey, both of them leaning against a building and Smokey had his two front legs crossed; what a pose that was. I also believe that Smokey won the Craven Award in 1966 for the excellence in animal acting. This video covers so much ground, from the horses to the best villains; such a grand video, Rob. Thank you.

An enjoyable interview. Patrick Kilpatrick is an actor whom I recognize more by his voice than his look. I have seen him as he looked in this interview in films. However in a few of the production stills, I went I remember that character by his look, but had no idea that it was Patrick playing that part. He is like so many of your guests funny and engaging. I hope you can have him back.

Nice interview, Rob. Patrick Kikpatrick looks so different in his roles it's hard to recognize him. I agree with him about horses in relationship to my earlier riding story to you. By the way, "Yojimbo" is based on a 1930s film titled "Red Harvest" which is from the first novel by Dashiell Hammett. The story has been remade so many times. My favorite version is "Miller's Crossing."

What a great life it would be as an actor, especially a western Actor, it is like having a childhood that lasts all of your life, playing "make believe" I would have done it for free! life sometimes gets in the way of "living the dream", doesn't it? sometimes you can be lucky and not even know it, if it was me I would be frightened to wake up every morning for fear it was all a dream....but we can live vicariously through listening to a Word On Westerns and we all appreciate that👍👍

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to youuuu PATRICK KILPATRICK! Born Aug 20th a _few_ decades ago. 👍👍 5⭐ Actor in the least. Also born not terribly far from where I currently live. 1:30 Wasn't that Trigger Junior? Oh how I relish having been allowed to pet that famous horse. Hey Rob, did I ever tell you that Sam Elliott personally checked out his horse, at Marriott Ranch, Virginia, for that Civil War movie... Gettysburg? Or God's & Generals? Unfortunately, my memory of our chat with the stable hands, manager, and Mr. Elliot at the ranch is failing.

I have long known that horses can be great, albeit impatient, actors. But my first "oh wow!" moment about stunt horses came from Lonesome Dove. The behind the scenes when Call charges the Hell Bitch into the horse that the army scout was riding. The army scout's horse just gets slammed into the ground. Then we see the scene from the opposite angle. The Hell Bitch never came close to ramming the stunt horse. Stunt horse just sold that scene.
