The Making of TOMBSTONE What really happened? ON LOCATION with "Texas Jack" aka Peter Sherayko AWOW

TOMBSTONE (1993) It’s been called a modern classic and one of the best westerns of all time. Who’s to argue with that? It’s a movie that almost didn’t get made. Learn the real story of the film’s development, struggle for financing and distribution. There were three movies about Wyatt Earp all being developed and filmed almost simultaneously. Two of them theatricals, TOMBSTONE and WYATT EARP. The third, WYATT EARP: RETURN TO TOMBSTONE was for CBS network.
The two theatrical movies competed for performers and distributors. Dueling Wyatt Earp movies! The first in production, TOMBSTONE, was also the first to be released in the Fall of 1993. There had been production problems on TOMBSTONE and the original writer/director Kevin Jarre was fired and filming stopped. It resumed with a new director. During production, dozens and dozens of production personnel were fired or left the project.
The casting was superb and Kevin Jarre’s superb script had attracted one of the finest ensemble group of performers ever assembled for any film in any genre. Luckily the film got made and was discovered and supported by a very enthusiastic audience. It became a hit. Those western movie fans still revere, screen, and discuss the merits of TOMBSTONE at every opportunity.
Joining A WORD ON WESTERNS producer host to talk about the development of the classic is actor/producer/historian Peter Sherayko, who portrayed the real life character, Texas Jack Vermillion. To this very day and until I die, I will never understand how Val Kilmer didn't win ANY award for his portrayal of Doc Holiday. The whole cast was just off the charts. This is one of the greatest movies ever made.

Val Kilmer later said that he and Kurt Russell while doing a mounted scene very early on in the picture with Cosmatos directing, and watching his weird camera placement, looked at each other both shaking their heads, each knowing right then that Cosmatos didn't have a clue. Val claimed years later that Kurt did in fact step in and direct most of the picture after that. And made a masterpiece as it turned out.

And to his credit, Russell told Cosmatos that as long as Cosmatos lives, Russell will never reveal his involvement in directing Tombstone. And he held to that promise and when Cosmatos passed away, it was then revealed that Russell did most of the directing. Kurt Russell is a class act.

True--I thought Kevin Costner's version was a bit much. I did like seeing Bill Paxton in it. And later the two reunited to play the Hatfields and McCoys. Man, those Hatfields were a strange and rowdy bunch! When I would be at my Papaw's house before my grandmother died, we'd hear them popping off their coon rifles after a night of moonshine. Later, when Mamaw died, one of the Hatfield women thought my grandfather was rich because he would get hand-me-down suits that were well tailored and expensive fabrics from my uncles, and he had a small house and acre the government gave him in exchange for his 158 acre farm on the Big Sandy River where they allegedly planned to build a dam and flood the area, so she thought he got all this money from the government for his ancestral land (got by land grants given to soldiers from the American Revolution). So she sweet-talked Papaw into marrying him by baking his favorite gingerbread cookies and made all these cakes and pies and cooked up fried chicken and what-not. I'll tell you what, the first thing after they got married and she found out he didn't have any money at all, except his pension (which wasn't much) she tried to kill him by putting rat poison in the gingerbread cookies. When he got sick from that and ended up in the hospital, my aunt arranged for a divorce--not sure what happened to that Hatfield woman, but we were happy to be done with the likes of them. Now, the McCoys did quite well for themselves with strip mining operations, but the Hatfields were not that well off. Kevin should do a new film about the modern generation of Hatfields and McCoys--or at least as they were in the 1960's.

Biehn as Ringo is amazing. I grow up watching him play heroes in Terminator and Aliens. He turned that right off and can play cold killers also. He is also the star of the late 90's magnificent seven show which is actually good

Tombstone is my FAVORITE film. I had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with Buck Taylor (Creek) and he did a lot of artwork of the actors in character (which he gave me as gifts). He always lit up when he spoke about the film. He enjoyed it immensely.

Growing up in Tucson living in Arizona I was real curious about history I went to Tombstone I read all the stories local stories as well in libraries in tombstone and in Tucson all my life I believed that the Earps were lawman this is the first time it seems to me that there’s a hint of sympathy for the Cowboys remember those dudes were evil evil to the core the opening scene where Ringo shoots a priest in the head show you the evil The Cowboys terrorized everywhere they went so as far as I’m concerned those four brothers were the four horsemen of the apocalypse taking out evil… As Young boys growing up in the west we used to think we were in the old west end used to go out to Pantano wash with our 22s and our army men stick army men in the side walls of the Pantano wash go cross the other side and pretend we were fighting them shooting with the 22s… AHHHH THOSE WRE THE DAYS…

The SAA Colt is generally the only pistol I've found that spins really, really well. I recall Russell Crowe telling how he trained spinning the Colt they gave him for The Quick and the Dead. He got really good with it. Then at the last minute they decided to give him an 1851 Colt Navy instead. Not a pistol you can easily spin. He was so disappointed. I have tried spinning my metal camping cup and it is really hard to do. I always spill the coffee lol.

I loved BOTH Earp movies at the time and still do although Tombstone has grabbed a slight lead over the years. It is one of the VERY greatest westerns ever made right near the top and is unparalleled in production value and performances. It is rare to have an entire cast and crew so in synch with their passion to do their very best on a project but the stars aligned on Tombstone because it could very well be seen as each actors and behind the scenes crew persons finest work. There's a story that Texas Jack Vermillion was being interviewed and was asked, "Why do they call you Texas Jack?" Supposedly he thought for a second, shrugged and answered, "I dunno. Maybe because I'm from Virginia." I've met Buck Taylor (Turkey Creek Jack Johnson, Newley from Gunsmoke) a couple of times. Very cool and humble guy. What most don't know is he's an incredible Western artist. Every time it came on at the station, all administrative and cooking stopped to watch. Any Dallas firefighter could quote the movie from end to end. It's still a quarterly tradition here at home.

Peter is hilarious, Rob! At the beginning of the show you flashed up a picture of the director Kevin, and I was floored how much he looked like Doc Holiday. Good show, Rob. Thank you. When Powers Booth said, “ does badges make you the law” It took me back to the movie Billy Jack. Tom Laughlin’s character Billy Jack had a line that said, “ when policemen break the law there is no law”, there’s a lot of truth to that. I carried that line from Billy Jack close to my heart just to keep help keep me grounded when I was a Deputy Sheriff.

I have met Peter a few times, though many years back now. I worked for a service that did work with John Milius' office, and he had us running hardware between his office and Peter's place. Also, a family member worked for Disney and knew Peter quite well and we went to one of his Buffalo Bill events. Tombstone has to be one of the best westerns out there. I like the Costner film as well, but Tombstone has it beat. This is a great video about the nuts and bolts of Tombstone and well worth the time to watch. I loved the line, “….but when you pull the string, it doesn’t talk”. Tombstone is the greatest western ever. The Searchers used to hold that title until Tombstone was created. Great actors, locations, set design, costumes, all of it. My only problem is the shootout scene. First, I've been to Tombstone Arizona twice and seen the site, read court testimony. I'm more than a casual fan. The gunfight was true to witness testimony until Ike Clanton went into Flys photography and shot at the Earp's. This did not happen. I'm not sure why the producers/ director allowed this in the movie. Still, the greatest western ever.

When I worked second shift oh, years ago I would set up nearly all night long and watch Turner Classic Movies. Great film, spectacular western, and memorable performances based on unique individuals. I did note one factual inaccuracy in that they presented the Buntline Special as the weapon carried by Wyatt Earp at the OK corral shootout is as the Malcom Scott said in The man who shot Liberty Valance. " When the legend becomes fact, print the legend". That gun didn't wasn't by Earps own testimony the one he carried, and used in the shootout, in the trial that resulted from the incident. But never let it be said that Hollywood let truth and history get in the way of a good story. Overall it was more realistic than most movies about the incident, and the people who were involved. This episode shows how unrelated events came together in a way that led to a great film being created. Great actors created characters whose performances made this film epic in nature. I enjoyed how you constructed this episode very much. It stands among the many bests that you continually produce.

Yep. The Buntline myth came from Lake's dubious book. Earp tended to carry his pistol in his back pocket. Which makes me doubt the rumors that he carried the 8 inch Smith and Wesson either. I also doubt the Smith story because one of Wyatt's favorite tactics was "buffaloing." Which was another term for pistol whipping. Fast drawing and whacking someone alongside the head. Something that you'd not want to do with the Smith Model 3. The model 3 story came from a guy that owned it and and made the Earp claim. Print the legend is indeed what happened.

From my own studies Kurt was wrong about one thing historically Doc Holiday did step over boundaries with Wyatt Earp which did break their frierndship up when Doc, who was a racist, made a racial slure agaist Josephine Marcus who was Jewish. And Doc died broke and alone in Glenwood Springs Colorado. Wyatt was not there. Like any movie there is historical fiction as well as historical fact, Tombstone and the movie Wyatt Earp did come closest to the facts than any other movie based on Wyatt Earp. Still would like to see those scenes Kevin Jarre directed. I think he had the right idea of using John Fords style of long shots. Italian director Sergio Leone was also influenced by Ford. In my mindI would love to shoot a western in the same style but actually use those big cameras that did the old technicolor. They bring out a color like you never see with modern cameras. With Arizona desert background possibly Monument Valley. Anyway just dreaming. I love this so much, Rob. Great to see the actors respond to their roles in Tombstone. Acting is so much more than taking on a role because it fits you. You really have to do a lot of research and these talented people did a great job of that. Thanks Rob, really thank you.

Peter Sherayko looks pretty identical to what Buffalo Bill Cody did in the later years. I have long flowing white blondish hair and a white mustache and goatee, so when I'm in conversations with people I'll get asked what I do for a living. I tend to make up this story that I do historical re-enactments of Buffalo Bill in a 4-5 state area, which is a lot more interesting than telling them nothing. I admire Peter for actually doing it!

Such an incredible movie. I never really thought of it like Sam said. 'The OK Corral was the start of law and order in the West.' Especially in light of all the small wars that followed in Arizona. But, Sam was right. And, yes Val should have gotten an Oscar for Best Support. Actor. What a great movie. When Doc worked for the railroad in Colfax County NM he was a man to be feared. The town of Cimarron elected a new Mayor to stand up to Doc. He was a young priest. That night he was shot & killed walking back to the Church. Everybody believed it was Doc. Sort of like the scene with Ringo & the Priest. Great one Rob. Thank You.

@@AWordonWesterns I’m jealous! I did one winter of guiding down in Arizona. The desert is truly magical. I’m only 62, but the years in the saddle beat me up pretty good. I had two orthopedic docs tell me I had to quit riding. I smiled and kept on cowboying and guiding for another five years till my body said enough. I joke that I had to go through a 12 step program to quit cowboying. But really, the pain was pretty much 24/7 at that point. Thankfully, I listened in time. I am now rock climbing (indoors and outdoors) and I telemark ski on our local hill and backcountry ski with my wife. She has made the transition very easy! Thanks again for your hard work. And enjoy your trip!

I find most Westerns, even supposed classics, disappointing, but I love Tombstone, one of my favourite films of all time. Val Kilmer as 'Doc' Holliday (actually a dentist as well as professional gambler) and Michael Behan as the outlaw Johnny Ringo, with whom Holliday fights a duel, are both exceptional in it. Good music also. An aging Charlton Heston has a role in the film limited to 2 lines.

Another fun interview, Rob. I enjoy "Tombstone" and watch it often. My only complaint is that there were so many recognizable western actors that I got distracted the first time. I like the Kevin Costner film too.👍👍👍 There is a long comment on the "Cheyenne" television series and the producer that was interesting too. I read and learn things from so many of the people who make comments. 🤔😄😀

This is just a great video... The added video is absolutely priceless... I love this video... I like Wyatt Earp (the movie} but I love Tombstone... The Kostner movie covers the life and Tombstone shows us the men as they were at this point in their lives.

A great video with stories about a great Western, maybe the best Western of the last 40 years. Congrats to Rob Word and Peter Sherayko. Outside the dedicated Western TV channels, "Tombstone" seems to be appear on the cable line-up so often that it is almost as if there is a "Tombstone Channel.". I fully expect that people will be watching "Tombstone" 100 years from now.

FYI: You can't talk about Hollywood Westerns without talking about the "Cheyenne" hour- long TV series. The partial comment on a Warner Bros. KZbin video describing the last season of "Cheyenne," [Season 7] is: "After seven seasons, Cheyenne put up the saddle after saving a studio, a network and forever changing American entertainment." Left unsaid is the role producer Arthur W. Silver played in making "Cheyenne" the giant hit it became when Silver, apparently out of nowhere, produced most of this TV Western's second and greatest season. IMHO, some of the episodes on this second season are unequaled as hour long Westerns. Of course, the "Gunsmoke" series' episode "The Cabin" (S03E24 - Aired Feb 22, 1958) is up there with the best, but it is a 30-minute episode. One second season "Cheyenne" episode, "The Bounty Killers," almost certainly could not have been released as a movie under the Production Code then it force. Cheyenne becomes the deputy to U.S. Marshal Moxon. Moxon turns out to be a psychopathic killer who finds it more profitable to bring in dead the wanted fugitives he captures. Less transportation costs. In the episode, a former sheriff in the town stands up to him, so Moxon insults him and goads the guy into a fight. Then Moxon can legally kill him. In the final showdown, with both Cheyenne and Moxon on horseback, Moxon, grinning, says: "Me quit, that'll be the day. Yes sir, a real grandfather." Then Moxon draws. Silver is a forgotten Hollywood figure. IMDb has next to nothing on him but his producing credits starting with "Cheyenne." His 1995 obituary notice in the Palm Beach Post (Silver moved to West Palm Beach from Burbank four years earlier) states that the 84 year old Silver started in the Warner Bros.' New York City ad department in 1937, writing Press Books. Silver then moved to Burbank in 1939, where he was in charge of the Trailer Department. Mentioned in the obit is that he produced the trailer for "Casablanca" and was a producer for the "Cheyenne" and "Maverick" TV series. Years ago, I bought the first season of "Cheyenne" on DVD. It was crummy, cheap low quality TV writing. When I recently saw some of the full season 2 episodes on KZbin (all since removed), I noticed the amazing quality difference. Silver bought in new writers for the second season, especially Berne Giler. Three of the best episodes had Joe Kane as the director. Nothing from later "Cheyenne" seasons matched the grimness of some of these second season episodes. Warner Bros. was on the ropes in 1955, facing disaster, or it would not have even made these TV series for their enemy, the television networks. The TV audience must have also noticed how good the second season episodes were. Warner and ABC noticed the higher ratings and ad income. In short order, you have on ABC the hour-long "Maverick," "Sugarfoot," and "Bronco" Western series airing. And producer Arthur W. Silver role in rescuing Warner Bros. is like those Press Books he worked on in the 1930s, a totally forgotten part of film history.

I just found out the gal who played Allie went on to be Ray Donovan's wife Abby, and Ike Clanton? He's the colonel in Avatar?! I had no idea. Greatest western ever filmed, this is hands down, the best editing, best direction, best cast, best script. A shining example of cinematic perfection. Everyone deserved an Oscar. Esp Doc Holliday / Val Kilmer. :)

Tombstone is such a great film. Whenever it's on I watch it. It blows the the Costner version away I remember being so excited to see Costner's Wyatt Erp and being so disappointed and bored watching it. I never actually finished it.

This is one of last epic action packed Western to come out in years aside of Unforgiven. Nice screenplay and music . That scene with Doc and Ringo was the most remembered scene in the film .

They could still make a sequel. Turn of the century, Wyatt is heading for Alaska, and Virgil is working in Goldfield, Nevada. Kurt Russell and Sam Elliot would have aged appropriately. It would be an awesome film!

IMO Kurt Russell and Val kilmer together as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday in this movie makes it the best version. The greatest movie about the Earps and Tombstone ever released. Kevin Costner's movie pales in comparison to Russel's. Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holliday is as worthy of the best actor or supporting actor Oscar as I have ever seen in any movie and it's a shame that this movie was so overlooked by the Academy.

I really like your series. Ya, I love all your shows. Ya I said love. I do liked the way you bring out important facts dealing with the making of each episode. I do wish, if you allow me to wish. I would love to see all of your episodes sixty minutes. That would truly be beyond awesome. I remember ‘Boots andSaddles’.
