In this episode I am riding my Honda CRF250L "Savannah" from Hluhluwe to Howick, South Africa. This is the KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa and it is an area of incredible scenery. But this episode is also about learning more about Nelson Mandela, apartheid, sad parts of South African history but also a message of hope. Unity. Ubuntu.
Want to learn how to use drones, GoPros and 360 cameras to film your solo motorcycle adventure? Check out: www.itchyboots.com/academy

As a small child in the 1950's, my Mom took me to Leonard Bros Dept Store in downtown Fort Worth, TX. At the entrance there were two drinking fountains side by side with a sign above each.; one said Black, the other White. So Africa was about 40 years behind us, but we should not forget that it can, and did, happen here. Another great video, Noraly, THANKS!

Hi Noraly. Love your content on KZbin. I am from South Africa and I really enjoy seeing my country through your perspective. I havent even seen most of the northern part of the Country. When you get down to the Western Cape province, you should definitely visit the town Oudtshoorn. It is my hometown and so much cool stuff to see especially the cango wildlife ranch, where you can see lots of tigers, lions, crocodiles and more. Also the cango caves and multiple ostrich farms. Then there is also the awesome accommodation options in and around the town.

Like everyone else has said, your channel has provided a wonderful portal to the world. In my case, I was especially interested in seeing South Africa in relation to its growth out of Apartheid. I love this video. Your recounting of the history of Apartheid was very good, especially if you did it from memory! Excellent content. When you ride, you've got thousands of passengers riding with you. Two things: Am I seeing your speedometer incorrectly? You seem to be a fast rider when in town. :-) Second, the quality of your productions exceeds that of television programming with huge budgets and staffs. It is better by far. I watch your channel even when there are literally hundreds of programs on television I could watch -- yours is better. I wonder whether you had considered distributing your channel to television. I also wonder how that kind of relationship would affect your videos. Imagine you riding with a camera truck following you.....

Listening to her pronounce it was the funniest and cutest thing! I’m South African so know how to pronounce it and I don’t blame her at all for getting it wrong. It’s a very hard name for foreigners to say because it doesn’t use sounds used in any European language. I wouldn’t even know how to explain how to pronounce it phonetically in written form, that’s how hard it is. But I’m definitely calling it “Haloue Loue” from now on and pretending I’m going to somewhere in Hawaii.

12:25. where is this statement? come see reverse oppression. Mandela is (not was, he still is.) a legend, just a pity his "comrades" are cut from a different cloth. come live here for a few years and come see the oppression. not just against whites, but xenophobia against each other too often sees our locals burning the shops of the foreigners. we have a mess on our hands and instead of fixing it, we are left blaming generations no longer even alive. lets all live for now, and forget our troubled past. 27 years into democracy and we have potholed roads, corruption, violence against our farmers and murders that go un-investigated. we have a power supplier that cannot run properly, and have been building a power station now for over 10 years and 200 billion rands over budget. We have massive power increases for a power utility that cannot even do basic maintenance and we often have power cuts because "our coal is wet". South Africa is beautiful, and that is why I still live here but its getting a bit long in the tooth with billions and billions going missing and no accountability for it. What used to be the powerhouse of Africa is now the joke of the continent. Learn the real facts about SA before you all want to make statements about how well or not you think we are recovering. Come to South Africa to see a beautiful country and try avoiding our uncolourful and troubled past. I don't go America to hear how the Americans shoot each other to death in the schools, so why would you want to come here to see this bad part of history that we should all leave behind. Nostalgia prevents Progress.

Exerce Perfectioni. Unfortunately our beloved country is a mess. We have always been divided and probably will be for many decades to come. The racial divide is just too deep and people have no respect for each other. I have followed your channel from the beginning but unfortunately this episode has kind of made me look at it from a different angle. Noraly - dont believe everything you have read about our country from the media around the world. People aren't always what they seem - especially politicians and sadly most religious leaders as well. I grew up in the apartheid era and certainly did not agree with how things were done back in the day - yet here we are - we are all worse off than ever. Apartheid in any form is wrong but the shift in leadership has not improved most peoples lives - instead the hatred and divide is being fuelled by their greed. Greed is not limited to color nor race. They beauty of this land cannot cover or hide what is going currently I have traveled the world and I can say that our country is indeed spectacular in beauty, but it is tainted by crime and hatred. As a adventure rider myself I try to keep my opinions to myself and I try to be as objective as possible about everything. There will always be agendas behind everything we see. My point is this. Enjoy the trip and the experience of being a adventure rider but don't be fooled or conned by people. Propaganda is just that. There are always two sides to any story, but if you haven't lived it - the good and the bad of it - rather just steer clear from making ill informed statements. Noraly keep riding and be safe. KwaZulu-Natal is a very beautiful part of this country - especially the natal midlands and drakensberg areas BUT be alert and don't go alone to remote areas. Team up with other adventure riders on this one.

@@domesticbliss007 Well I think a lot of the thumbs down for this video are because of the inclusion of something that could be interpreted as politically-motivated. But yes, you are right, there is no commentary during the ride, which does seem a bit unusual.

@@lshort8842 Why is this so-called (by you) "political content" substantially different from Noraly's commentary regarding the Germans and Americans in the Netherlands during World War II? It isn't. Don't the thousands upon thousands of white crosses represent the farmers who have been murdered; white crosses ignored by the "civilised" world, those with a hypothetical morality that accommodates propaganda but steers clear of the truth? However, that is only the tip of the iceberg: since 1994, the lives snuffed out (of beleaguered cultures that contribute almost zero percent towards the violent crime statistics of the country) are enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground? Perhaps a slow-moving genocide casually tossed into the "general crime" body bag of the country?

We have gained some positive things in all this Noraly since Mandela was let out. But they are few, and far between. But we are heading if the ANC leaders do not get a handle on corruption, mismanagement, racism, (African against African, African against other foreign Africans and African against Whites) then this wonderful country is going to end up like the rest of Africa. You need to balance your starry eyed European view of South Africa. What is going to happen if the ANC goes through with the very negative factor like trying to sell the idea that they can legally steal your property, without paying for it. Well I will tell you it is not what Mandela wanted. We will have a Civil War.

Sadly most communities throughout the world have experienced/suffered from some form of "land theft" and those who currently occupy the land are likely not the original people who first settled there. This includes the Bushman and others who first occupied Southern Africa and who were later dispersed by the movement of Central African tribes (Great Lakes Region) during their period of migration and thereafter by the European settlers and the story of who stole what and who has more rights will never end. Apartheid and the unjust laws may have officially ended from the White Rulers and white privilege but sadly a new order by Black Rulers and Black privileged and unjust laws have been rewritten and exists today currently in South Africa regardless of the justifications why it had to redress the past injustices. We can only hope that sense and freedom will prevail for all ONE DAY.

Not really true. The Dutch were early and staunch opponents of apartheid. Both the Dutch people and the government of the Netherlands provided significant and ongoing material and moral support to the anti-apartheid movements during the struggle. The African National Congress for example operated a diplomatic mission in the Netherlands with the full support of the Netherlands government. The descendants of the Dutch settlers in South Africa identified as Afrikaner, not Dutch, and this had been true for at least 75 years before the first implementation of the first of the apartheid laws in 1948. Further Afrikaners were not solely responsible for apartheid. Many white English-speaking South Africans were complicit in greater or lesser degrees.
