The horse manager mentioned the horses were Basuto ponies. Lesotho in British times used to be called Basutoland.

I lived in that beautiful country when I was 21 and worked on a gold mine near Welkom. I travelled extensively every weekend and went to Jo 'burg, Kruger National Park, Durban, Swaziland and Lesotho etc. It was 1988 and I visited Swaziland/Lesotho a day or so before Pope John Paul II and the atmosphere there was totally electric! I rode over 'God Help Me Pass' on a pony and had the time of my life in those days. I've done plenty more in my life since 1988 but have spent many a moment thinking and talking about my time in South Africa back then! Best wishes Noraly!

I live in South Africa we do have lots of problems. But it is a awsome country for bike riding and safe if you stick to a few rules traveling the country. We also do have the most friendly people in the country and you will see how people will always help each other.

If you noticed, there was an " Armed Response" warning sign entering the horse lodge, every home has a wall and gate. We were warned not to go out at night in many places across the country. It is a great trip, but always be aware of your surroundings.

I was waiting for you to get to the Sani Pass! I knew you wouldn't miss it out. My first ever motorcycle off road adventure was in 1987 going up to the top of the Sani with my father on unregistered motocross bikes and were told we could not enter Lesotho on British Passports and unregistered bikes. My Dad told the guys that the Queen of England said we could come in and the guy at the checkpoint actually let us through the gate! 😆 Times change, but I still recognise the road even from when I was a boy. You are so lucky, It was snowing, with frozen waterfalls when I was there. Baie Dankie for refreshing my old memory!

Chicken liver is delicious, we cook it up for our dog because it is so cheap here in Thailand, and he loves it, but I quite often help myself to some as I prepare his bowl! The wife’s recipe is mouth watering!
