As a racer for 10 years I will say that these guys have incredible bike skill. I can ride a track pretty fast but I probably can't ride a wheelie one handed weaving through traffic for three miles. They have some skills.

I didn't really consider how important or even therapeutic this could be until I tried it. I didn't know how much closer my sons and I could become just by going out and riding. I'm happy that there's such a culture and brotherhood of riding in these big and otherwise bleak places. Coming from a much more ideal environment, it's done wonders for me and hasn't cost as much as you might think. Anyone watching and dreaming of being able to ride: save some dollars. Learn all you can and develop a passion for it before you ever throw a leg over a bike, if necessary. Watch your local online classified ad pages like a hawk, several times a week so you can get a finger on the pulse where you live and so you'll be ready when your bike pops up on your screen.

Hey man. Not all of us are lucky enough to live in areas where we have an ideal place to ride (i.e. woods or a track). Imagine if you lived in an area with high crime and not a lot of opportunity, where it was virtually impossible to physically escape it? Riding for these guys is like a mental escape or break from the daily stressors of life. Granted riding in the streets without the proper gear is very dangerous but let's focus on their circumstances. What other choice do they have? If these urban cities were smart they'd build some sort facility or track where folks could ride and learn ..potentially from "real riders" that you yourself claim to be. Win-win for everyone. Think about it. Don't be so quick to judge in such a negative light.
@stanbgn
@stanbgn 7 жыл бұрын
as usual most of you are short-sighted & showing your implicit bias by ASSUMING everything. Again all I suggested was IF they had a legal place to ride it could help reduce or eliminate the dangerous riding in the streets. but as per usual you all focus on your negative racial bias & stereotypes.

I see a lot of self-righteous posts in here from people missing the point. Is this dangerous? Yes. Is this against the law? Yes. No reasonable person would ride around crowded city streets going fast doing wheelies... EXCEPT, when you live in an area of abject poverty, murder, drugs and prostitution, THEN popping a few wheelies in traffic with 30+ others being free and wild seems like the most important thing in the world to do. As "pointless" as this all seems to some people, it actually stopped more young boys in these areas from joining gangs and selling drugs. They put all that energy into the bikes. Older guys recognize that, and steered them more towards the bikes then gangs and drugs. If not for the dirt bikes, there's no doubt in my mind, Pug would be into some FAR worse activity. I don't know how you solve the dirt bike problem, it is a problem. But I'd rather that than more drug selling and shootouts.
@steveneaster9761
@steveneaster9761 9 жыл бұрын
You want to solve a big part of the problem then give them a place to ride. I live in the country and there is still few places for people to ride unless they have 10-20 acres of land. As far as the reasonable person wouldn't ride around in crowded city streets going fast doing wheelies you couldn't be more incorrect. It is a guy thing, the adrenaline, the sound of the bike the practice and practice it takes to learn to ride a wheelie, the joy of working and building a bike and the accomplishment of the final product. I have two college degrees, own my own business and enough land to cover several city blocks so it has nothing to with living in an area of poverty, drugs or anything else. Now as far as the kids they should teach them safety such as wearing a helmet and chest protector but all in all they are not harming anyone just enjoying life. It may upset some people that they drive on the streets but alot of people that drive their cars in the street are more annoying than someone riding a dirtbike. As far as being against the law how many times a day does every driver in America break the speed limit laws? Everyone, everyday!

Parents, look at your babies. Look, don't look away. What do they have for a future? How many of their precious souls did you create intentionally? How many of them were conceived when a near-stranger "nutted up" in you, all care cast to the wind. Now they are souls with hope in their eyes, and the path they have before them is paved with negligence. Negligence. Negligence and no direction.

+eric archer Is that the alternative, Eric? Are you certain that that option is what they would appreciate you saying they would/could do? Gotta watch what you think is the truth and how it can implicitly dog someone who doesn't want your label. Another thing is, I don't play getting shot, so if you sent your boys in they'd be in big trouble. Do you want to say that this is what you recommend? Are you one of those buying the idea that these bikes replace violence and crime? They ARE crime and irreverence. Although popping a decent wheelie is a cool thing, look what the ghetto had to take it to. Open a book and go to school and integrate into society vs. opposing society.

I absolutely LOVE these guys!!! Their having fun and my hat goes off to them for their courage and hope they continue doing it, their gifted to be able to ride like that. Yes their breaking the law cause you can't ride them on the streets, but what option do they have? City kids aren't allowed to own dirt bike? The problem isn't riding them on the road, but there's no other place to ride them. The city should make or have a place to where they can ride them. Punish them for what they enjoy doing will only make them worst and have no respect for the law, help them to find a place to ride them 1st, and then punish them for riding them on the road to show them respect for the law. KEEP RIDING GUYS and be safe. God Bless

mkelebay Do you have one of those bikes? I do. And really, I can tell you that a 450 bike like that does 25 miles to the gallon maybe, and that you have to change piston every 80-90 hours of running and the chain, drive sprocket and wheel gear (if its the wrong names i'm sorry I'm not american, but you know what I mean) every 20-30 hours. Also the oil, as you say, every 15-20 hours of running. For a comparison: A normal touring bike has an engine that will last many thousands of hours without touching and has to have maintenance done on it about 10 times less frequently. This of course if you want the bikes to last more than a week, but, as you say, mostly those bikes are stolen, so chances are they do no maintenance at all and see how long the bike lasts. How dreadful

+Alex Keil I've had several bikes, and you don't have to keep them in mint shape to have them running, crf230s are great examples, they are basically bulletproof, you can leave them sitting for a year, clean out the carb and put some oil on the chain, and youre off to the races.

Im a tow truck driver in the Baltimore area and i'm in and out of the city all day. I've seen these guys, and for the most part they don't cause any trouble other than blocking up intersections and light traffic delays. And 95% of the time the cops don't even give chase anymore, they just park in the area and keep an eye on them incase one crashes. Its just amazing to me how they think their these great motorcycle riders, wow you can do a great wheelie, congrats lol try wippin thru the woods at 60 miles and hour sliding on mud and dodging trees

The kid is right at min 3:30. No matter what hassles you are dealing with in life, you get on a dirt bike, and it all goes away. These kids are going to be OK. Some of them might even gain the self esteem and become hero's, if they choose,----just like all of us. You kids should study the history of MX and how it got to the USA, it's all on you-tube. It is a great example how one new industry (after WW2) could provide so much opportunity,--for all of us. I never thought I would see Black kids riding dirt bikes in a city, (or anybody). It is an amazing machine, isn't it? (Get into manufacturing and make parts for them, or more. You will love being a GOD, bringing in stuff with value that did not exist until you made it. Yea, I am talking from experience, and it all came from dirt bikes.
