I think it was a great idea to put this engine in an adventure bike. Once the kinks are worked out I could see them spreading it to other chassis. Maybe throw some fins on it to give it that old school look and have it slowly implemented in some of the touring bikes. Going to be tough with all the hate current H-D buyers give when something new comes out.

Harley has had hydraulic lifters in the V twins since the 50s on some model engines with no adjustments needed so this isn't really anything new for them . Most people who build a V twin engine for performance usually get rid of the hydraulic lifters & go solid because you get less valve float and you get more lift out of the cam plus higher RPMs because with hydraulic lifters once the oil thins down from heat you loose some lift plus their is always a slight delay between the hydraulic lifter & push rod to rocker arm & with solids you have none of that but the down fall of solids is more maintenance & if you over rev the engine often times you end up with bent valves or holes in the pistons from the valves smashing into the tops of the pistons especially if you have a ignition that doesn't have a rev limiter built in or an adjustable rev limiter . Looks to be a great engine but looks ugly compared to the air cooled V twins in my opinion . It's too bad Harley pulled out of Super Stock bike drag racing after all the years winning quite a bit using the V rod engine that pushes those bikes to low 7s in the sanctioned 1000 ft drag strip at over 190 mph because I would be curious to see if Harley or Vance & Hines would maybe try to use these engines in this class for racing or not . Supposedly the V rod engines used on the drag bikes are making close to 1000 hp from what I read on race fuel with injected throttle bodies but no other power adders like a turbo blower or nitro or nitrous which is crazy hp for a V twin .

@@RidingintheOzarks I hope so because the only name that's used for the HD drag race bikes are Buell showing on the tanks and I would rather see the name Harley Davidson on the tanks . I also wonder if maybe HD could use this engine in the new flat track bikes as well to at least compete with the Indian that not only stole some of HDs riders but we're smart enough to start engineering testing & building their new flat track bikes before HD did & pretty much has dominated the last few years with it .

It is a maintenance free system, and with a chain instead of pushrods, they will work fine. My '95 pc800 has them and it works great, however I did once swap all of them out in a bmw 316i because of a defect bucket (clack clack clack) and I did see that happen on honda shadows. So maintenance free yes, not problem free. I think the electrically adjusted camshafts will prove more of a reliability issue. We'll just have to wait for 1 or 2 years.

I would wait on buying a first year it comes out. I bought a new 2015 street 750. You would not believe there problems it had. The valve covers leaked replaced under warranty. They claimed bad retainer bolts and defective gasket. Steering head bearings in triple tree were not sealed right from factory water got in there locked up steering could not move so rusted and seized replaced whole front assembly under warranty. Two recalls for safety bad fuel pump and rear deflector not to standard. Handle bar controls came apart while riding scary. Another warranty claim. I know the msrp on Pan-America is $17,000 plus starting msrp vs $7,565. Harley hasn't built a all new bike since 2015 and before that 10 plus years. Let's say the engineers forgot how to build a reliable safe bike. Hope you the best of luck with your Pan-America motorcycle 🏍. This was my experience with a all new harley platform motorcycle.

I'd say Harley needs to get something in the hottest selling genres right now, and for starters the ADV bikes are at the top of that. Probably naked sports/street bikes would be next. After that, performance bagger/touring machine. A true sports-tourer isn't a hot seller at all and many brands have gotten out of them; bikes such like Concours 14, FJR1300, Ninja 1000SX, H2SX. Gone are ST1300, VFR800/1200, Sprint ST 1050, GSX-1250FA, etc. Now it's 5 different versions of an ADV, old legacy sports-tourers that've been around a long time, sports nakeds, classic/heritage/retro/cafe stuff, and superbikes. Then there's the big tourers with big bags and tons of weight.

As long as the oil changes are easy and the primary chain is gone, and full LED lighting I would like to see a version of this bike bumped up to 1400 and put in a street glide, road king, and heritage classic with no change to the style of the bike, just add a motor. The days of those hot air cooled engines with the loud shifting clunk are gone. Liquid cooling is the way forward to get those hot volcanoes between your legs in check as well as all the unnecessay engine parts like pushrods, pushrod lifters, rocker arms and a big huge left side primary chain rotating in oil using 1950'/1960's technology. I love the Pan Am and am seeing long term reviews saying it is as much a Sport Touring as Adventure bike. The biggest issue I see Harley having is convincing people to buy the new Sportster S over the PanAm. Myself I’ve been waffling. I don’t intend to ever ride two up, my wife is uninterested to say the least, and don’t plan to go trail blazing but would take the basic off-road course. I personally think that this is something Harley has needed to do to stay competitive with the rest of the market. I think they need to keep the bigger bikes air cooled and be more like Indian in their approach. For example, the Chief line has the thunderstroke air cooled mill and then build a lighter bike using the new liquid cooled mill to compete with the scout and then another for rivaling the challenger. Let's face it if they want to stay sport competitive liquid cooled mills allow for greater power figures that are sustainable over greater distances at much higher revs. Indian has a couple of different liquid cooled mills and an air cooled mill. If Harley-Davidson could bring another LCM offering to compete directly with the scout and one for the challenger, I believe they will pull in more of the younger crowds. I do not think they should completely abandon air cooled pushrod engines as it will cause the more die hard enthusiasts to jump ship but they need to offer up designs that will compete with all of the Indian models directly as that is the rivalry that has always been and like in years long past Harley needs to play catch up because Indian is kicking their butts. They need to reconsider the vrod which was in my opinion what the scout was directly competing against.

@@RidingintheOzarks Harley-Davidson has always stayed with if it isn't broke don't fix it when it comes to the designs of their machines and have relied on nostalgia to promote their sales. The V-rod, the street series, and now the Pan-American have been the only true deviations from design cues that have been around since the 50s. The FL has been one of the longest running model designations. It is nice to see some true modernization. The AMF days had Harley-Davidson branded Aerimacchi bikes that served as dual sports and lightweight entry bikes but they were never Harley designs this is Harley collabs with Harley designs which makes it more authentic and appealing.

I had a BMW GSA with the shift cam and was wondering if the PanAm was similar and after watching your video on the engine details I could see what appeared to be the solenoids to achieve the same technology. Also the clarification of hydraulic no maintenance valves was great. I test rode the PanAm last week and have to admit HD did a pretty good job. Would I get one to do my cross country rides instead of the comfy reliable Ultra I usually ride? Hell ya! This is not a KTM or GSA and I am glad it is not. The PanAm is more comfortable and nearing 70 years old losing 400 lbs while increasing performance is a huge bonus. Thank you for putting this video together in a quick, neat and technical fashion.

It is a sharp looking engine design... no doubt. Let us see how this engine pans out in a new years. I believe HD will be making a version of this engine for their touring bikes in the near future. Many of us want reliability and longevity. Our air cooled engines suffer from overheating, which requires expensive upgrades to tackle. Time will tell. I highly recommend never buying any new HD design until the bugs are ironed out. Look at the nightmares with the 17-19 M8s. Excessive oil consumption, sumping, etc...

All good info and I applaud Harley for taking this initiative and hope they have nothing but success but I have a few obvious questions from the cheap seats not mentioned in your video: 1) Who was the brain trust behind the engine design? Inhouse Harley/USA, third party engineering like the V-Rod, or? Highly complex engines can have highly complex problems if not engineered correctly and as a potential customer I want more than faith in the bar & shield that they got it right, I want credentials with credibility. When the cheese slides off the cracker the owner gets to hold the bag, especially down the road if problems persist (wouldn't be the first time a manufacturer walks away from a design). 2) Where is it manufactured? Harley leans on their "Made in the USA" title but have shown increasing shifts to leverage global manufacturing (no different than many other manufacturers) and I would want to know whose manufacturing economy my money is supporting. Note: I'm Canadian so I lost out on any outcome of this but I would think this is very dear to their core customers concerns. I haven't read anything about domestic production nor the involvement of an engineering company with a depth of experience in these technologies which makes me wonder. I think it would be nice to know, no matter the answer.

My hope is the engineers at HD built the Max to be reliable and durable as the original Revo. If so, this will be a one of the great engines in time. The GS1250RT comes out around $22,000 USD. Harley is going to have the frame, because Harley makes good frames, suspension has always been the weak spot, but $2000 at tge dealer gets you better suspension than BMWs stock. I think they should use this engine as a "Sport" model for all of their cruisers right now. Softail Standard Sport, Road King Sport, Sportster Sport. They did that with the Dynas and sportsters back in the day. Superglide sports and Sportster sports. So do it now! Give the bikes front adjustable forks, and adjustable rear shocks. Dual Disk upgraded brakes. Take the lean angles from 25/28 degrees to 34/36 degrees. THATS what the market wants. That's why all the old FXR's and Dynas are being bought up and turned into sport cruisers. Imagine a 1000cc revo engine in a sporty. Or a 1250cc in the Softail. Then for the bigger tourers do a 1450 or 1500cc. They would FLY out of the showrooms.

I am with you on some of this but I don't sacrifice the comfort for lean angle, I just rode the Rebel 1100 DCT with 34 degrees and they did that and I think the foot pegs and leg ergos are not good. Remember cause it is a different motor means a different frame and that is costly, the softails just a got a new frame a few years ago so while we will see new models that maybe similar like the custom 1250 I would not expect to see traditional softails get the Rev Max treatment anytime soon. And I agree some of the markets wants this but I see plenty of comments from the die hards that don't want that too... Best option build different bikes to suit both kinds of riders...

@@RidingintheOzarks Yeah I know it just wouldn't be cost-effective at all. Maybe they should take a little bit of the tech and try to fit it into the 114's but again, idk if that is cost-effective. I currently own an 01 Superglide sport that has a 34-degree lean angle and there's a reason I haven't let go of it lol. I know they can do and do it very well. I think they will just have the two separate lines of bikes. As you said, the traditional cruisers and the new. Hopefully, the new custom will have a more traditional cruiser trim level in the future. Still, if they could find a way to just slap that thing into the Softail, even as a 1 off, I'd love to see it!

Radical concept, rework the heads so exhaust exits in the valley and add a turbo.
