I love how willow grouse will just run up to people, babble nonsense for a minute or so, then attack

love a fearless bird! so many people around here hate seagulls n turkeys n canada geese but I love em! they're small compared to humans but still get all up in our business over bird territory bs bc they know humans arent brave/fast enough to really fight back. a human might be able to defeat a bird in hand to hand combat, but at what cost? and thus the bird always wins. fearless birds of the world are the true kings of the earth.

plus, with canada geese, there's this neat trick where if you give 'em distance and respect, they'll probably do the same for you. most geese are just mad about people getting too close to their chicks, even the ones that've fledged and look basically like adults - make it clear you're not a threat, and generally, they won't regard you as one. (it's also why fighting them often makes it worse in the long run - to them, it reinforces that ALL humans are threats, and the standard Large Goose method of handling threats is biting and flapping, which makes more people feel the need to fight back... it's a vicious cycle of goose violence)

Grouse (or any bird for that matter) cover their territory in many ways like calling/singing, displaying, chasing, attacking, flying, etc. for many reasons, such as asserting their boundaries, territorial defense, policing their mates, nest protection, etc. You name it!
