Thank you for this... My uncle offered me "the secret book of gnomes" when i was 8 YO and this book never left me since then. I now read it to my two daughters and they love it too. The level of details in those illustration is incredible. The inside view of the gnome's house is somehow my kind of dreamhouse.

I love his paintings. I found his book about Dogs in a small bookstore here in America. This interview was a gem and I was surprised how much he scrubbed at the paper to put the watercolors down. I love to see his process. I also think, as an American, his comments on Americans were funny and showed his character. He seemed like an ornery sort of man which, honestly are the best personalities in my opinion. Thank you for posting this video 😊

I love his book on dogs. It has helped me so much with my own drawings and pastels. He really loved dogs I feel by the way he drew them and their expressions.

The subtitles missed this but at 6:56 Rien mentions he admired and wished he had the talent of Bruno Andreas Liljefors 🙂 and he also admired illustrator Harald Wiberg!

I really love his work, despite being an American without any taste. Aside from that, I think he was a huge talent, and I enjoy seeing behind the scenes on how he worked and how his studio was laid out. So I can't stay angry at him. That Swedish interviewer, on the other hand, is no artist, so he can go to hell.
@MrWildlifefilm7 жыл бұрын
You know nothing about that , the Swedish interviewer is a world renowned wildlife artist. But you are not worth that knowledge.
@rayerscarpensael23004 ай бұрын
@@MrWildlifefilmhe didn t show any respect, only spoke about collegues supposedly better than Rien which no one was or will ever be. Poortvliet used no tricks, no projection and not one single wrong painting or drawing since 1960. Plus he was a holy messenger, to warn us to protect our past. You have no idea of his importance in the netherlands for millions of people to feel proud about their heritage.

the editing and filming and the filmmaker suck,,, the interviewer seems to be more interested in talking about other painters than Rien himself, very disrespectful,, Rien says it all at the end, roots and pride, that is what Rien had and the others don't,, fantastic man

What prompts the outburst at 17:40 ? Who is he talking about? Americans, obviously, but was there some artist that prompted his comments? There is some murmuring just before, but I can't make out a name.
@MrWildlifefilm7 жыл бұрын
Brian Cotner They talk about David Sheperd and Dino Paravano.
@CotnerMD7 жыл бұрын
Is that who he's upset with? He said he had met David Sheperd many times, and didn't seem to be critical, so I imagined that someone had muttered another name after those two. I have looked at their work, and while I certainly prefer Poortvliet, I didn't think an appreciation of Sheperd and Paravano would be enough to convict an entire country of poor taste. Also saying either of these men had "never seen a sunset" seemed unfair. (Though if they had said the name "Thomas Kinkade," I would have understood).
@MrWildlifefilm7 жыл бұрын
He also mentioned the swede Harald Wiberg who Poortvliet had met in Sweden
@CotnerMD7 жыл бұрын
Yes, he is complimentary of Swedish artists Wiberg and especially Bruno Liljefors. I really don't understand the context of anything he is saying about America and American taste and roots after about 16:40
@MrWildlifefilm7 жыл бұрын
I guess he is proud of the European traditions and not so about the American. Why , I don´t know....probably just a matter of taste. The Americans with many of them painting very much "photo like" . I believe that is what he ment.
