when I decided to learn the patterns in this song (I'd guess around 4-5 years ago) I used that same method you're calling "cluster counting", it just makes a lot of sense for some of the "odd groupings" in metal riffs

Ah Uneven Structure. Their album Februus is still one of my favorites of all time

Love when a totally unrelated KZbinr I follow slips in a random RLM reference. Also I approve of the term "Meshuggah adjacent" as an elevated distinction from "djent"

Oh wow I remember hearing about this band back in the day when I first heard about Chimp Spanner.

Man I've been listening to this track for years and every time I'm a little gobsmacked by how much rhythmic information there is in the intro, what with the guitars doing all this, the cymbals doing something completely different, the pedal hat and the snare keeping that 4/4 going underneath everything, love it.

This riff blew my mind when I first heard it, and the only way I could learn it was precisely this counting method. It also makes a lot of sense that the cymbal is dotted quarter notes and the attacks are dotted 8ths, I remember trying to notate it as quarter note triplets
@mrmmkd Жыл бұрын
The only thing now we need is showing all of the countings in action with the first (without higher attacks) and last (with higher attacks) riffs of Humiliative

I haven't thought about this band in years but their name popped into my head right after I woke up today. Weird coincidence or a sign that you're conducting a slow ritual to unleash an eldritch horror that will roam free as soon as we all understand the musical geometry that is its prison? Either way keep up the great work, love this stuff. Also I hope we'll be getting a breakdown of Trepanning sooner rather than later. So many awesome riffs in there, wouldn't be upset if you didn't cover anything else for the next however many months it takes to explain the whole thing.

haha thanks so much! I don't think I'm going to do any analytical stuff about my own music on the channel because it feels a little self-indulgent lol but maybe a little bit in a rapid fire riffs or something. Thanks so much for the support and mind reading!

@@metalmusictheory5401 An understandable but unfortunate answer. For what it's worth I'm sure it would be just as educational as going over someone else's music, I think it would only be "self-indulgent" if you didn't have anything interesting to contribute from a theory perspective but that clearly isn't the case. Even just a few brief comments on your thought process for each section could probably spark some ideas in the audience.

bro I didn't realize this was a special kind of counting I just use it for breaking down patterns when counting is too inconvenient. used it for hail the sun wake to meshuggah born in dissonance really helps order things

Februus was a top album for me in 2012, I rated it along side other albums of the time like One, Masstaden, The Didact, Gnosis, Grind The Ocean, LMNTS.

Video so cool as always!!! Nice to have that triplet feel during the riff with the crash cymbal and that the last one is 2 sixteenth notes (instead of 3) because 128=42*3+2 haha

Any reason not to include the first beat in cluster counting, as to count all beats? So, instead of 2326, it would be 3437, so 17 beats. I'm asking because I usually count it this way. Like this sticking : RLLRLLRL, I would call it 332.
