I'll never forget the audience reaction when Kilmer finished his Brando imitation and then shook out the pillows from under his shirt. Like we didn't already know we were watching the movie from hell.
@danchallis8056 жыл бұрын
I saw it in the theater too and it was a very strange experience. I was in high school, stoned out of my mind and I'd never heard of the book and knew nothing about the movie. Some friend just picked it out (if I recall he was a big Kilmer fan) and I walked blindly into this bizarre film.

excellent documentary called "lost souls" which give the background to this nightmare movie. At one point Brando would not come out of his trailer before kilmer and kilmer would not come out of his trailer before brando. Richard Stanley was hired to do an $8 million dollar film and they brought in brando and kilmer and it went to $40million and Stanley was over this head.

I watched that movie as a young man, 15-17 years old, and that was in the 70s. But neither Kilmer nor Brando played, I'm sure of that. Then Kilmer must have been my age or younger. I believe younger. Is this a parody or a remake of an old movie. Yes it does. 1977 Burt Lancester & Michael York. Which is a copy of the 1932 film "Island of Lost Souls" all more or less according to the book of H.G. Welles from 1896.

As H.G. Wells spins in his grave, we get to watch rifftrax rip apart the utter filth that is this movie. You gotta feel bad for Brando. He thought he was going to be doing Mr. Wells justice, when, in fact, the director took a dump and said "I should make a movie based on a book, only not at all based on the book." And proceeded to push this big log out of his ass and thought he had the right to call it "The Island of Dr. Moreau".

Brando had a lot more to do with the bad choices in this movie than any of the directors did.
