57:16 In every interview about making "Manos" that I've ever read, Bernie Rosenblum (who did stunts, was the guy in the British sportscar marking out with the girl) or the camera guy complained that shooting in the dark always attracted moths, because their location was a ranch on the outskirts of town and the trees were full of them. They never thought to shoot day for night even once, that's how raw to film-making the crew were.

This movie proves that if you are going to shoot wild track (soundless) and dub everything in later, it's still good practice to have a tape recorder on set so your dubbers can match the intonations of how the actors spoke the lines, so the lips match better if the dubbers are not the actors in the film.

The kicker is that you can see what they're going for. They clearly wanted it to be Mr. Bean crossed with a "life's eternal loser" type struggling to get through these relatable scenarios. Without the charisma of someone like Atkinson to carry it, though, and without Norman having any sort of agency in any of his suffering, it just comes off as the unending tribulations of a sad sack. Watching the unluckiest man on Earth get shit on by every aspect of life just ends up being depressing more than funny.

The story goes that, in the movie, the director wanted him to appear like a satyr, so he wore these uncomfortable braces on his legs (hence the wall and fat thighs) that was supposed to make it look as if he had goat legs. The pain was so severe that he was prescribed pain medication which he became addicted to and resulted in his unfortunate suicide.

I like how the father just imposes himself and his family on someone who clearly is telling you this is not their house and the actual owner doesn't like visitors. It's interesting to see an early MST3K with Joel played thirty some-odd years later with Mike and Rifftrax. A lot of the original lines are still playing. The part where torgo gets tge luggage, in the original Servo says 'its like having Joe Cocker as your bellhop.'

I don't know if the original cut out some scenes but I swear there are a few parts of the movie here that I don't remember from the MST3K version. Definitely more awkward pauses are obvious.

So far, the Rifftrax I have watched in full are: R.O.T.O.R Attack From Space Plan 9 From Outer Space The Last Shark Replica Gammera The Invincible and now Manos: The Hands Of Fate These riffs have shown me that even the worst movies can be made better by your style of humor. Keep up the good work!

Plan Nine actually stands pretty well on its own. Okay, maybe "well" is the wrong word, but it's bad enough that it's unintentionally hilarious with no riffing needed. Contrast with Manos, which is just plain dull and hard to watch on its own because so little actually happens. Even riffing Manos is a challenge because people typically base jokes on dialogue or events, and the movie doesn't have much of either half the time. You can't even really make use of cheap props or sets, because there aren't props to speak of and the "sets" are featureless rooms. It's a marvel of their skill and the writers' talent that they've managed to pull this movie off twice now.

So just a little digging. Normans License Plate is a Michigan License plate. It says "Great Lake State" on the bottom. I am pretty sure that is Metro Airport in the 70's. I know the actor lived in Royal Oak for most of his life.

What a perfect thing to watch with a big bowl of prunes. Say, how did they do these live ones? It feels too spontaneous and well-timed to be prepared, and they couldn't be watching and reading a script at the same time, but it's also fantastic top-tier riffing.

They do have scripts. You can see them turning pages and reading from them. But it was recorded live at the theater, hence the audience and occasionally flubbing a few lines. I don't think anyone could remember all the great jokes without a script!

Being so familiar with the MT3K version, I was a bit dubious the first time I watched the Rifftrax version (who could possibly riff better than the original?) , but the guys did it, it's just as funny as the original. Thank you guys for helping me sculpt my sense of humor as a kid. Wait a second... You a-holes made me watch the worst movies ever made, I'm not even sure what a good movie looks like because of you guys. On second thought, screw you Rifftrax, I'm broken forever.
