In this video I review the classic 270 Winchester cartridge. I briefly discuss the Winchester Model 54 rilfe. I discuss the cartridges' history, usefulness, and how it compares to other 27 caliber cartridges. I compare it to the 270 WSM, 270 Weatherby Magnum, and 27 Nosler.

My name was drawn for moose this year, 26/09/2023, I bought a weatherby vanguard in 270win for the hunt.... dropped a small bull 537lb. The ammo I used was a 150gr round nose soft point S&B. The hunt began at 7:15am , the hunt was over at 7:20am... with a lung shot. 130yd... Through thick brush. Bear season is next..... Thanks for the video on the 270win it's an awesome round.

FYI I got the 165 Nosler ABLR’s to shot sub moa at 2800 plus fps in my 270 win. Do the math and that is a great long range round. Don’t be afraid to try the heavy for caliber bullets. Sometimes that will still stabilize w the 1;10 twist barrels.

Hey - the Hawk Bullet Company manufactures a 165 grain bullet that is designed for the 270 Winchester with a 1 in 10” twist. While it is not designed for long range hunting - at woods ranges it’s puts more “pow” in an already great American classic.

My first deer rifle in 1964 was a Remington 700 in .270 Winchester. I was secretly disappointed because I wanted a Winchester 94 lever gun in 30-30. I was hunting mule deer (and later elk) in Western Colorado so I came to appreciate the .270 cartridge. It proved effective on elk but I was always careful with shot placement and was aware of my limitations as a shooter.

Had a trouble spot with some rem core lokt 130s so switched to Hornady and federal and back to hitting like thors hammer. Was just thinking about buying a new 270 and then I saw this video. Great job. Just curious, the drop chart you used has the 270 with less drop at 400 yards (18.5) than the 270 WSM (23.8)? Or I may have read the chart wrong.

Well...!!!???### I've used the .270 Win for sixty two years with about 98 percent one shot kills. Moose, caribou, grizzly(yep), white tail deer, hogs, ground hogs, 50lb African antelope up to 2,500lb African eland. The grizzly was killed with one shot...130gr Nosler Partition. My opinion from a lifetime of seeing .270 kills is stated in the following statements. No matter what cartridge used and bullet size, bullet PLACEMENT is 90 percent of killing power. The other 10 percent is the unknown. Finn Aagaard, a professional Kenya hunter had vast observations and experiences with a good many calibers in his native Kenya. He made the statement he had seen more one shot kills with a .270 than with any other caliber. He was very fond of a story where he shot a wildebeest squarely through the lungs. The animal appeared surprised and ran off as if nothing had happened, after being shot with a .375 H&H Magnum. This was not the only time he observed a larger caliber fail to quickly put the animal down. I suppose ALL of us have discovered that life is not perfect. My .270s have been easy to accurately place shots to the boiler room because of flat trajectory, good bullets and LOW RECOIL. I've shot the .375 H&H Mag!!!!! It hurt me so bad I had to pee and didn't make it to the john. Low recoil, flat trajectory and good bullets equals shot good placement. This is just my experience.

@@glennrcampbell4411 Never heard a better testimony for the 270. I think most hunters like myself get sucked into paper ballistics to much. Hype from ammo makers and gun writers feed the hunting public like used car salesmen. I was a sucker for the 7mm Magnum to replace my 270. Could not tell the difference on game. Now lm with the 30-06.

🤠 As we contemplate the "Miracle" of the Christmas season and reminisce about hunting seasons past, let us put things into "Historical Perspective"! Winchester dominated the last century of rifle cartridge development and, at the turn of the previous century, had the market for hunting with their 30-30 lever action rifle! Then along came the Spanish-American War and WWI and the use of the 30-06, in a bolt action rifle! Seeing the potential of both (for long range hunting out West), Winchester tweaked the use of both and came up with their own bolt action hunting rifle - chambered in the 270 Winchester! This set the standard for long range hunting out West and is still among the most viable and popular options almost a century later! It is Truely is a "Hunting Cartridge Miracle"! 👼My prayers 🙏 have already been answered! 😇

When it comes to WT deer hunting… the “this versus that” that haunts me is 7mm-08REM vs 270WIN. I recently chose to go with 270WIN despite the fact that the 708 competes closely with it in terms of downrange energy and terminal performance. So why the 270?? I chose it for the flat trajectory. With a 129gr LRX bullet at 3075fps MV I can achieve a 7”dia. kill zone maximum point blank range of 300m (330yd) in winter conditions. The 708 can achieve an MPBR of 275m (300yd). Yup… only 10% difference. The 270 requires 20% more propellant to yield a 10% increase in point blank range over the 708. I love them both… they are fantastic cartridges.

270 Win.....my first hunting rifle, my favorite. I have 4. I have a friend, a big game guide in AZ. About 20 years ago I asked him what he thought about the 270 Win being "minimal" for elk. 🧐 So, the Browning Hells Canyon Long Range (LR) now has a 1 in 7 1/2" twist for their 270 Winchester barrel (it is a 28" barrel in a tactical rifle though, just not what I am looking for)! When I was looking to rebarrel one of my 270 Winchesters - though that may no longer be necessary if my guns will shoot the 165 grain Nosler ABLR accurately - Lilja and Hart have a variety of twist rate barrels (1 in 9, 8 1/2, and 8 for the 270)! Since the 7mm Remington Magnum can shoot up to a 175 grain bullet with a 1 in 9 twist, according to most reloading manuals - I think that would suffice for the heavier bullet weights in the 270 Winchester? I had heard that other companies are beginning to put a 1 in 8 twist on their new 270 Winchester rifles too, from Shot Show reports (so, are more heavy 270 bullets going to soon be available?)! Meanwhile, Browning still doesn't seem to be supporting the 6.8 Western very well! So, could it just be that people don't want to part with their 270 Winchester, or is it because the performance of the 6.8 Western really isn't all that different, or is it because the 7mm prc is going to kill it's sales? Your thoughts??? 🕵️‍♂️

🤠 For my hunting purposes, the 270 wsm and 280 AI are just to my liking (both have about the same recoil as the 30-06)! However, the 300 wsm and soon, the 7mm prc, will have more support! Both the 300 wsm and 7mm prc are fine cartridges, but just a little more recoil than I would prefer (and why I prefer the 270 wsm and 280 AI regarding "performance" vs. recoil)! Luckily, for me, the 270 Winchester has met my needs quite well and with new powders and bullets, has become better than ever! 😮

Not a 270win fan nor care about Jack O'Conner or Outdoor Life or anything like that. I got into the 270win around 2018 because I found a lefty bolt rifle for it and factory ammo and components were cheap and very available. Even thru the pandemic I could find 270win and component bullets locally so that was a big deal for me. It happened to be the most available in my area. That was reason enough so I ran with it. It can use 90 to 150gr bullets so it makes 25-06 basically not needed and with 150gr its enough for larger game and recoil isn't too much. I only pack my 338win and 45-70 when I'm in grizzly locations.

I just replied to someone's opinion here that the .270 is not for larger game. Well.... I've hunted from the top of the world(Yukon), to Tennessee, to Southern Africa. From groundhogs to moose, caribou, grizzly(yep), to 50lb antelope, 600lb waterbuk and kudu to 2,500lb eland. One shot kills were the norm. I only messed up on the water buck. The shot was too low. The next shot finished it. Shot placement is 90 percent of killing power, as state by Finn Aagaard. Finn Aagaard was one of our most experienced (NRA) gun writers. He immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1970s from his native Kenya. He observed the .270 in action, and stated he saw more one shot .270 kills than with any other caliber. He used the 7 x 64 Brenneke (exact twin to .280 Rem). Again, he stated 90 percent of killing power is shot placement. The remaining 10 percent is the unknown. In Africa my .270 trumped other hunters with larger calibers in .375 and .416. The hunters were poorer shots due to heavy recoil. Shot placement, low recoil, and flat trajectory is what has made the .270 a international success.
