Slight correction, at 2:28 I say the shovel handle is jammed down through the belt, I meant to say brace but managed a slight flub, only caught after editing.

Ah yes, the winter of 44/45, just a tad on the cold and snowy side. That's a understatement! I have a water bottle cover that is dated 1944, in very good condition. I have the water bottle, but I think its a post WW2 issue. I've heard they made them into the 50's? Its safe I had it checked. Holds a quart of water. I like it.

GS shovel auxiliary carry position to taste.

Great video, as always. Do you think the shovel was carried in that manner because some soldiers believed that it might protect against bullets or shrapnel? To me it looks rather uncomfortable, especially when prone.

A good question, something I have wondered too but not found reference to that supposition.

Respirator has been removed as well as the entrenching tool
@philipwilloughby68194 жыл бұрын
Great video, noting that no light weight respirator is carried. Was this common to be discarded at this stage of the war, presumably not being enforced by officers/NCOs?
@RiflemanMoore4 жыл бұрын
It would often be dictated by operational orders whether or not the respirators would be carried or not. They could be left in unit transport with the pack when not required.

How come they didn’t carry the small intrenching tool?

Why did the british army decide to only wear the gas cape in the final parts of the war whilst they were aware that no gas was used? Isn't the raincape more usefull?
@RiflemanMoore4 жыл бұрын
The gas cape has sleeves and therefore makes a better waterproof than the groundsheet, it's also much lighter. As said in the video it can be used as a waterproof or as a lightweight groundsheet.
