Not saying its great but everything the so called "large pack" from the 1958 pattern webbing should have been and wasn't..

In my unit the draw string and lock from a cast off NBC jacket were utilised as a draw cord for the main compartment of the bergan. Great load carriers.

This was used by Recce Troop and the A41 Radio carrier. Utter shite now but compared to the 58 pack a cool bit of kit in the 70ties.

I had one as a cadet and thought it was atrocious due to the frame ,then I joined the regulars and encountered the 58 large pack ,a more badly designed piece of shite you couldn't hope for, bought a Berghaus Cyclops roc on my first leave fantastic Bergen(still have it and use it 38years later😊

@@gorbalsboy 58 webbing was awful as issued, most of us heavily modified our own sets, I had mine sewn together by a cobbler to make sure it didnt fall apart, and snipped the entrenching tool attachments off the back of the yoke- I still have my old Berghaus Crusader Bergen too got it in the late 80's as the largepack could never carry what you needed....

The Bundeswehr sack is quite similar, but smaller. I wasn't Infantry at the end so a lot of us used these as Small pack with 58 kit. Mostly carrying tools and non issue Cold weather kit. These bergans were such an improvement over 58.

Why they gave up on this to use the 1958 pattern pack is beyond me.

I have one dated 1973... Still use it. One of my favourite Bergens. Better than that awful 58 pat large pack and in my opinion the GS bergen...had them all, used them all....

Looks like an instrument of torture but can carry over 70lbs comfortably...straps are much more comfortable than they look..at least as good as the PLCE, if not better. No adjustment on the move though....and repros make the waist support strap too long and thus useless.

It definitely looks like it used the Ludwig (Telemark) pack for inspiration. Those frames are great when you're a thin squaddie, not so years later when you're chunky. I used one for a while before I bought my vulcan cyclops II in 86. Still got them both, made to last they were.

I have a question about p37 webbing, was it the left or the right pouch that would contain 2 BREN mags? And how were theyvorientated within the pouch? Thanks

Got the Australian version. It's constructed of lighter, more tightly woven ,darker green canvas, no waterproof sections..Terrible weight distribution, due to it's "triangular" shape and lack of any significant frame/suspension adjustment. Used it twice, before upgrading.

I've got one as well and it really doesn't carry very well! I find it to short! And I'm a short dude! I got mine off a 9 SQN Doorgunner who got it in VN off a 8 RAR guy.
