As a ex infantry soldier I'm impressed by the design , I tried Alice pack , sas para began, before plce was issued decent bergen that 44 pattern

Amazing how similar the SAS / Para & smaller GS bergens are in shape and design to both the ones shown. Great video thank you very much.

One has to wonder why they didn’t use this as the basis for the ‘58 pattern large pack, instead of the a@£&t€§n they came up with!
@allenprior85732 жыл бұрын
Perhaps because the ‘58 pattern pack was never designed to be used for a “long carry”. In the new world of troop carrying vehicles it was really intended to be used for changing stations. However, we know about good intentions…

War was going to be mechanised wasn’t it? Again stuff happens and the people who design stuff but never have to use it day today can be thanked.

@@allenprior8573 58 Pattern Webbing Equipment was the replacement all purpose Personal Load Carrying Equipment of its day, so yes it was designed to be used on route marches and carrying distances. All webbing has been designed with this in mind. Trials reports of the period are testament to this. However, vehicles were a factor which influenced to 58 Pack design in as much their stowage in transport such as 432's (cages) was a consideration. Meaning that the packs had to be able to fit in the space available inside. The best supporting evidence for my suggestion here is the title - CEMO.
@simonh63712 жыл бұрын
@@badgertheskinnycow Exactly that! Otherwise it wouldn't have been called CEMO!

@@allenprior8573 Well I wish someone had explained this to our DS back in 1989, and probably many other DS!

You can certainly see the lineage between the 44 pattern and the later SAS/Para Bergen. Nice.
@badgertheskinnycow2 жыл бұрын
There are similarities but I would suggest that the Commando Bergen had more influence over the SAS Rucksack design - albeit with adjustments for the intended frame used.

Like many others who have commented here, I'm simultaneously flabbergasted and annoyed that this wasn't adopted and that generations of us had to put up with the diabolical 58 pattern large pack.

Looked better than the 58 pattern pack.

Been after one for ages to finish of my 44 webbing set but no luck yet , I think they are made of unobtainium lol

I really wish that someone like WPG would make reproductions. I know they don't hold any value to original collectors but it'd be nice to have P44 since I can't find shite outside of broken belts, etc.

as always a great video and very informative!

I did not know that these existed, nice vid. Could you in the future maybe do a vid on British Army Rucksacks through the ages? A Rucksack with a frame, so exclude '58 "big" bag, lol. Start at WW2 with the Commandos at D Day, move on to this item strapped to the "manpack carrier", the Navy/Marines Rucksack as in the Falklands/Norway and so on, GS, SAS, PLCE Green/DPM and whatever is issued between then and now. That would be nice to see as a series.
@RiflemanMoore2 жыл бұрын
Could certainly be something for the future, yes!
@badgertheskinnycow2 жыл бұрын
If you exclude the 58 pack then there would be a 25 year gap in the carrying capacity of the average Infantry Soldier. Better surely to include it and discuss its pros and cons.
@simonh63712 жыл бұрын
@@badgertheskinnycow Or a 35 year gap in the carrying capacity of other Arms and Services lol.

By definition it is a Large Pack and not a Framed RuckSack/Bergan thats why i said to omit it, we all know of its uselessness, is that a word?
@jameskellard50752 жыл бұрын
Very similar to the pattern used by Rhodesia in the early days of the bush war, particularly the Royal Rhodesia Regiment.

Rare beast! The L straps will slip when the pack is loaded/ overloaded as what happens I am sure.

wow, first time i've seen these ! and now i am so annoyed... after these two examples, we had to struggle with the horrendous and useless 58 pack !
