@@RiflemanMoore I've got a long cold weather smock with fixed wireframed hood. It's got a metal double zipper made by Talon. I've seen American m51 coats with Talon zips, but I've never seen british gear with American made Talon zips. Do you think it would be possible to date the coat knowing it's got that particular zip? Also the label in the coat looks like an old design. The number on the label is 2405 99 132 2524. Made by HE textiles and there's another number ct 44507 I think it's a bit faint. Maybe you can help date it?

Thank you for the video. I bought such a 1960 DPM jacket when I was in London in 1998 for 5 or 10 pounds; I bought also 1968 patterns for the same price (4 of them in very good shape with 3 troussers and 3 artic parka). Still have them in 2021. Like news.

I was issued a 1960 pattern in 1974 when I joined; I’m a 2434……Points to note…the two lower pockets on the smock were elasticated..this created a form of inverted pleat at the front of the pocket. Also the zips were metal..heavy duty and fantastic.

Have seen an illustration by Mike Chappell of a RMP in NI, 1971, wearing DPM trousers without a cargo pocket on the right trouser leg. Always wondered what type of trousers these were supposed to represent.

Glad to have answered that, the 1960 Pattern DPM kit was basically used up through the 1970s on a replacement basis.

as usual, a bang on vid, from the pieces I've owned or handled it's always seamed that the trousers have all had that 'bleed thru' I've often wondered if it was intentionally meant to happen, as if they were trying to get more of a effect. but the smocks never seam to have that, their colors seam to stay inbound ,lol.

Many thanks! This smock does exhibit the effect it's just much less pronounced.

The early DPM seems lighter in colour possibly? Not just fade from washing, but lighter print. Darker DPM was possibly part of the reason for changing it as it obviously didnt blend with arid regions so well and when wet looked almost black. Maybe the lighter green would have avoided a change to MTP.
@RiflemanMoore
@RiflemanMoore 5 жыл бұрын
The first shift to a darker DPM seems to be due a change in cloth from pure cotton to cotton-modal. The print then got darker again when printed on poly-cotton. It seems to be resultant of a change in cloth, as well as official changes to the colour of the print.

I've read elsewhere before Iraq war 1 the British government either sold surplus NCB suits to Iraq in DPM and the Iraqi government copied the pattern for some of their uniforms or sold permission to Iraq to use the pattern. Either way when Gulf war 1 kicked off this became an issue and the writing was on the wall for DPM. I don't know if this is true the internet being what it is though I have seen Iraqi DPM.

@@jelkel25 yes I've seen it and mentioned it on KZbin before, there was a desert DPM but with some dark brown in it worn by some Iraqi units, not widely worn though. Perhaps a large trials batch sold off? Personally seemed a better idea than the one adopted by MOD as that's arguably too bright.

@@RiflemanMoore yes it's got alot to with the material itself I suppose, dying polycotton is not easy. The polyester not being very absorbent thus hard to colour, but easier to dry when wet, double edged functionality. The dyes also wash out over time so starting darker means you get a head start on the fade perhaps?! :) Thank you.

@@Surv1ve_Thrive I saw a woodland DPM too, the pattern was extremely inferior to British DPM but at a distance, how could you tell? What would Iraqis want with woodland DPM?? I get an impression Saddam was very fond of copying British kit, I have an Iraqi copy of the 44pat water bottle from the Iran/Iraq war somewhere. Many countries have copied DPM and I think along with the dark dying issues the MOD decided to call it a day.

When in the 70s 76 77 we wore OG lightweight working dress trousers with the 70s DPM jackets .we found the Combat trousers too hot in the summer in the city's due to there lining we found the camp chogie waller who was from dhekelia camp Cypress he was a good tailor he cam up with a fix for our field dressing we would club together and buy a pear of lightweights and he would make about twenty dressing pockets single stitched and fixed with a standed trousers button from the loops it was nicely pleated so when empty it was flat this became a standard upgrade to our lightweight trousers. On exercise they were quicker to dry out having these gave use the option when we got the new DPM jackets in 83 they had a dressing pocket on the left bicep this was a hazard to us when under cam nets so we stitched them down at the corners and use the pocket on the trousers as per the BDs of 44

Cracking video as always. But I have a question. My late father had / kept his old issued DPM smock.( like that pattern). But the collar was rounded and not pointed. More like the old 1960s OD design... Was it a trial version ?

There was a DPM version of the 1960 Pattern uniform. If you could send me a photo by email I may be able to identify it.

1960 Pattern DPM has been collectable for a while, 1968 Pattern is becoming more so but can still be picked up as surplus from some dealers. Even 1984 Pattern is beginning to find a market.

Was issued the same style in TA in 1979. Very thick and heavy. Didn’t like the 3/4 zip. Next issue was much better.
