This is the importance of velocity to wounding. The 194 gr subsonic from the .300 Blackout is essentially a .30 caliber handgun round. It has the mass, velocity, energy, and momentum of a 200 gr .45 ACP, just not the diameter. It does have a high sectional density, so it behaves more or less like a handgun round with little stretch cavitation, but with more penetration. At handgun velocity, the tissue is elastic enough to stretch and deform, and then return to normal with little to no permanent damage. The temporary stretch cavity is much smaller, not nearly as violent, and doesn't significantly contribute to wounding. By comparison, the 6.5 Creedmoor is very much in the realm of a high velocity rifle cartridge. You can see the stretch cavity is large and violent enough to break ribs several inches from the path of the bullet, and blow chunks out the exit wound. Once you start dealing with projectiles impacting over 2200 fps, the temporary stretch cavity becomes not so temporary. At the velocity rifles operate at, tissue can't stretch far or fast enough and it tears or breaks apart. You can see that the high velocity rifle not only possesses more energy, but also uses it to contribute to wounding. Whereas much of the energy of the subsonic .300 Blackout was wasted jiggling jello with little effect, the energy from the high velocity 6.5 Creed absolutely did damage and would have been orders of magnitude more effective. Having enough velocity to do cavitation damage allows high velocity rifles to not only have more energy, but to use much more energy contributing to wounding. That is why rifles are so much more effective than handguns.
@BallisticHighSpeed2 жыл бұрын
That's all really good information, thank you!
@MTMILITIAMAN7.622 жыл бұрын
@Chano Leyva I understand this and never said handgun rounds have high sectional densities. I said the .300 Blackout round had a high sectional density, so it behaves like a handgun round but with more penetration. The shape of the 6.5 round has more to due with its BC than its SD. It would have the same SD if it was the same mass put round nose and flat based. Rifle rounds have higher SDs due to having more mass in proportion to their diameter. SD is a numerical representation of how much momentum a bullet can get in line with its center of mass. All bullets of the same mass and diameter have the same SD, and SD will increase with mass.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.622 жыл бұрын
@Chano Leyva I cut rifling for Proof Research. I understand how this works. You are repeating pretty much exactly what I said. The .300 Blackout fires a projectile at pistol velocities, but with a higher sectional density than most handgun bullets. Yes, the 140 gr 6.5 has a high sectional density. I never said it didn't. Do you have a point relevant to my comment or do you just like hearing yourself speak?
@reefread12342 жыл бұрын
All this interesting technical talk leaves out that 6.5crdm and 300blk were created with different applications in mind, hence the wildly different effects. ones a purpose made long range target rifle cartridge and the other is designed to be a versatile step above pistol calibers in an European theater or NATO mission where there are close and long range situations and collateral damage may need to be considered with subsonic heavy bullets and by simply changing a magazine a barrier blind cartridge can be swapped in to shot through cover or a high velocity bullet can be swapped in to shot out past 400 yards.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.622 жыл бұрын
@@reefread1234 The intended purpose is irrelevant. The importance of velocity to wounding was the entire point. The purpose behind the individual cartridge's creation is a different discussion as the specific cartridge is largely moot to this one. Any high velocity rifle cartridge compared to any subsonic cartridge will do for the purposes of this discussion.

The scariest part is how much we miss, visually, of the damage that's being done. Our eyes see just a fraction, in this case, a quick wiggle of the gel dummy, and some "blood" that leaks from the bullet wound. These high-speed cameras really show how insane the reaction is from taking a rifle round. Knowing this is as close of a simulation we have...still....it makes you think. That shit is devastating.
