Rift is a free to play, fairly traditional styled fantasy MMORPG that initially released in 2011, Since then the game has released multiple expansions to a declining playerbase, Rift is most known for it's open world RIFT events in which you kill enemies until a boss spawns and the rift closes, this game also features PVP, Raids and a quick adventure mode that scales new players up to higher levels so they can participate in multiplayer content with friends.
What do you think about Rift in 2021? Do you think this game died year ago and I'm scraping the bottom of the MMORPG barrel by covering it again (you're right) or do you think this game had a lot of potential and was ruined by the publisher? let me know in the comments below!

Rift was awesome when it first came out, but they really should have gone all in with their initial design philosophy of making the game all about dynamic events rather than a hybrid event and quest system. To date, it still has my favorite class system.

Played it for a very long time when it came out. Man I remember the Rift events at area's, how enemies would be alive and running around everywhere and everyone was fighting them to close the rifts and it was so hard to stay alive sometimes. All the raid bosses... then the game went F2P and tbh, watching the game die as it did was depressing. Kept at it for a good while after but man did it fall off

Oh yea i love that too enemies conquering stuff ppl get together, what an mmo. My theory is that blizzard sabotaged this game's community somehow, afterall it presented itself as wow killer, and the com was really off IMO Of course it didn't have the best endgame gearing from start, but no MMO had it in its release when you rushed through.

Dom/Chloro or Dom/Pyro. The first could heal decent and basically was a total troll. The other had instant fireballs. I actually made a wonky Dom/SC that slowed and DOT'd people. It was crazy good and I never saw anyone else playing it. This game was AMAZING. It seemed the level increase and soul contribution percentages is what killed the classes. Hybrid/unique builds couldn't compete to pure or mostly purist builds because of the native 1% bonus per point spent into a soul. :(

I'm surprised Arena Net/Guild Wars 2 are still around after joining NC Soft. I also notice GW2 isn't in NC Soft's standard lineup. Sony Online also was bad, I remember paying $12/month to play Planetside, and found out there was only ONE developer left maintaining the game. let's see, 20,000 X 12 = $240,000 a month, and they couldn't be bothered to have a team of developers.

I still play this game. still do the raids with my guild each week. It's a good game. its just lost alot of popularity after Nightmare Tide there is still quite the playerbase, its just not as big as the bigger mmos are. theres always something to do in RIFT which is nice. cap is 70 you're right. and the map has much more once you are past that first area. Warfronts are dead at low levels but high levels people still pvp and raid. intrepid adventures (which is what you did) are like dummed down raids, you were in a Nightmare Tide raid which is one of the cooler ones i've done playing this game. Gamigo took over RIFT some time ago after Trion failed. They swear up n down they'll make new content soon, whenever soon may be. If you want to really see more of this game i'd be happy to show you.

I miss this game. In it's short lived time, it was one of the best. Great raids, class skill builds, world events, and community. Just failed to keep up with other MMO's. Sometimes you have to bring in what the other companies are doing well to evolve and they did not. They rode the horse they rode in on until it literally was just about dead. The company did try to make some other MMO's that pushed new ideas but they should of focused on one MMO. They had a gem.

One of my faves that I play to this day is the Primalist Tank/Healer class. As far as support goes yes, Bard is amazing to play and so is the Warrior Class with [not kidding] 11 different RAID buffs and also has 6 self buffs, of which 4 can be turned on at same time... NOT including the Raid buffs on top of it! Primalist Tank/heals has several buffs too which gives unlimited room to work on group play combinations and the soul system allowing us to switch on the fly by going from full tank to Ice-Mage heals with multi-layered Buffs/Heal and heal over time spells leads to only one conclusion imo.... RIFT was years ahead of its time and if that game was being released today on an upgraded version of the original Engine, there would be a server farm somewhere breaking from the sheer volume of gamers wanting to pre-order it!!

Classes system combining 2-3 souls in different ways to create different builds - one of the best still. 36/30 Pyro-warlocks,Support 51 archons builds,Aoe StormCallers and so on. Raids in this game was something incredible. First time progressing actual Hammerkneel Fortress or Infernal Dawn,Endless Eclipse or Gates of Infinity/Planebreaker Bastion/Mount Sharax.... Pvp was pretty good - black garden,Codex and 3-4 others. And then 3 faction Conquest with 100 ppl each faction introduced - boom,so much fun during first months of it... Tears...

@@Goremize MMOs just lack that spark they had. Instead of a few solid MMOs, there's hundreds of these mini-MMOs. You look at Classic WoW, and it's clearly broken in places; it was built with "hey, what if we did THIS" type developers who were new but trying things because they were cool, whereas modern WoW is streamlined with everything quick and organized for optimized progression and balance -- but at the cost of class-unique buffs, more significance placed on your race, item restrictions depending where you are, and class abilities being curbed for balance (are there even any 1 hour cooldown spells anymore?).

This was my first MMO at launch. I played as Warrior Bahmi, just seeing those woods brings back the fondest of memories. We had a SOLID pvp community back in its golden Age. If you where good, you where actually known by name throughout the entire server and people would seek you out to test their mettle. Guilds where AMAZING back then. The FacTion wars on the pvp servers where fucking LEGEND. We would constantly do raid parties where we would go and decimate people in the enemy faction capital and vice versa. This game will always have a place in my heart. Thanks for this revisit. I found your impressions fair to the highest degree. I truly wish this game where resurrected from its current state, and that strange feeling you can’t explain is the games ability to make you feel at home.

I LOVE THIS GAME 😭 NOTHING, *NOTHING* compares to this game Ever since it's downfall, I could NOT find a replacement for it Obviously, Archage is as close as it's going to get, but its also ded :/ Now for the rant :D The way the skills work is INSANE so many combinations AND YOU CAN SAVE AND SWITCH TO DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS Like from a warlock to a healer (or something like that, its been a long time ok) THE LIFE SKILLS I *SPENT* (not wasted) soooooo much time just doing things like fishing, leatherwork, and crafting fun trinkets with the tailor I remember always giving myself a 2% mv spd boost and always being the fastest around ;v; I wasn't around for its downfall, but man was it fun while there were a lot of people The new player zones were one of my favorites to see active, peopling were always running around and talking Everyone would usually be chilling at that shipyard town trying to catch that one fish for the daily The PvE and PvP were a lot of fun as well, the way they implemented it was so seamless You queue up, you keep playing, and within 5 mins you would get a yes/no popup to join Might update this if I remember more xD

13:50 That is a raid boss, in fact the whole scenario is lfr like rotating wings. I remember spending hours in there, trying to reach 1k hit, not even knowing if that would work. Fun fact: on that boss there is a safespot in the front left where no aoe hits you. I remember playing it so much, when I couldn't afford wow because I was too young. I played a ton of open world content from 2.8(?) onwards. I had the most fun when Nightmare Rifts were released, just endlessly grinding them either on my 2-button-Shaman (honestly who ever designed the macro system was insane) or tanking them to wave 100+. I know there was an instanced Rift system, but I never really joined a guild, except once, but I was hopelessly lost in the game, so I felt uncomfortable and left. I played so much in that patch, that I'm pretty sure I reached open world (pre-raid?) BiS, including the thingy that goes into the bottom slot on your character pane, that cost currency cap. I even spammed the hard queueable dungeons, though I was almost definitely underperforming on the damage side, which didn't make them as much fun. I still don't know how I could have reached 1k hit, before a quest was introduced that apparently gave an insane 350(?) hit weapon. I loved having to put on 10+ buffs every hour because I kept some runes and items that would give me like 2-20 of a stat and 2-button-Shaman had so many buffs. Also, I was one of the first, if not the first to pull the legendary crab mount out of a box, I think.

I played Rift a couple of years ago around the time when the nightmare tide expansion came out. The different options of playing my mage were a lot of fun. Especially the tank spec and the DPS-healing (both as a mage) were really great and something pretty much impossible in other games. What I did not like so much were the grindyness of the game. Sometimes my guildmates took pity on me and showed me were those stupid little artefacts from the zone event were, because I could not see them for the life of me. But there were a lot of customization options and gimmicks you could actually use to have fun with your friends. I will never forget scarring the shit out of our healer with one of these huge Halloween transmutations. Good times... I am really hoping there will be a game that lets you choose how you want to play and not only which role.

PvP used to be really fun in this game due to the fact that you could spec into 3 different souls at any given time. The instant adventures would put you into a random raid group in the open world, where you'd then run into another friendly raid group doing the same quests as yourself, then all of a sudden you'd come across an enemy raid group and it'd kick off. That and world bosses used to be where the open world PvP pretty much happened. Seeing HK again hit me in the nostalgia. The game died during their Nightmare Tide expansion, they essentially made an earring slot which you had to pay to unlock, which made the game P2W. They then made it F2P thinking that was a decent business model to get more potential customers to buy these slots. Trion messed up. I think I was one of the few who stuck around doing the world bosses until there wasn't enough people available to kill them. That was pretty much when I quit. It's a shame really, as the game itself was good.
@Goremize
@Goremize 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I remember that slot! Oh man SO many people quit the game with that one. Trion had a gem of a game, and they tried to milk it way to hard and did not focus on it enough, I remember them making other games at the time too instead of just focusing on Rift.

Two things where really good about this game, you picked a class then could make your character by picking 3 trees from i think 9, so it's really the ultimate hybrid and of course the rift system was epic, small rifts all over the zone if left unchecked became bigger and bigger until a massive world event was triggered it was really cool, and you are right greed killed this game...

I still remember playing this game, had such a great time in it, getting a beta invite from their halloween copetition was pretty fun. But the game did great in many points in my opinion, the way they did achievements was pretty good, having it reward currency you could use on different things made it a lot more motivating to do them. And well, the main thing, the rifts themselves was just an amazing feature to do where I had a lot of fun, and just seeing the rifts for the first time, seeing their animation when you opened them was really cool. I miss this time in Rift quite a lot honestly. Their class system is also really good with having the different classes having several sub-classes where you could create many types of playstyles and new "classes" from them, another really fun thing about rift was the dungeons, they were pretty fun to do and even more fun when it comes to group composition since in Rift, you have the regular Tank, DPS and healer role, but you also have a designated Support role which was fantastic to have in an MMO. Another thing I really loved about Rift, which is something ALL mmo games should do, is that when you are a caster, either dps or healer etc, then your weapon is an actual part of the animation when you are casting spell because it just makes it so much cooler when you are actually using your weapons when casting your spells. I'm still pretty dissapointed that this is not something we have in WoW, I would have loved to see this in WoW too, so tired of MMO games where all the casters just run around with their weapons on their back all the time and never actually using them when casting spells.

The rifts used to grow too if left unattended and would take over entire zones. But the talent trees were the best of any MMO past or present IMO.

This game should be the standard that all MMO's look to in regard to class building. Being able to mix skills/passives from 3 separate classes on a micro level offers the most unique and diverse class system ever. I loved it and miss playing this game dearly. I would happily play again if it had a decent playerbase.

From the start, you said, "there's not to many mmo's... " that aren't showing their age. I keep crossing my fingers for Anarchy Online to revamp character creation models; they revamped world graphics by leaps. I can't cope with how characters look though. Side note, just subscribed; older gamer 50+ For a couple years, been enjoying your videos. Keep it up.

This was one of those games I used to return to once in awhile, but once PvP queues died out that was the end for me

I played Rift at launch and the faction capital was absolutely packed with players. It's very strange to see it completely empty, my brain is inserting "ghosts" of what it used to look like. Maybe there's a level-cap capital somewhere where you can still see a bunch of players running around? Apparently the world has at least 3 continents now, at launch there was only 1.

Back during the original mmo goldrush, Rift absolutely ruled when anything except not life wasn't good enough; comparing it to how it is now says more about the way the genre went rather than Rift itself. It may be dead now, but I was glad to be one of the few who got to enjoy it when it wasn't.

I remember this was my WoW killer back in the day. Sadly they couldn't keep up the pace of enhancements and polish....the class's and rift's made this game so fun to play

This game was so great. I met and played with many wonderful people. Rift invasions could spawn anywhere in the open world with bosses appearing. It has a cosmetic/transmog system better than any other mmo. With the wide variety of class specialisations, your single character could be anything you wanted it to be. It had so much potential to be one of the long-time great mmos of today. Unfortunately, no new content has been added in the last 4 years.
