I’m at this exact stage!! I went to the Ballarat camping show on the weekend and was surprised at how underwhelming I found caravans to be.. way to bulky and heavy for my needs. Looked at pod type setups as well, but still not for me. Not interested in rooftops at all either. Never thought I’d say this but, I’ve come to the conclusion that a “4x4” van is going to suit my needs more at this stage, so I will be doing a self build to my liking. Yes, I’m going to be a “Van Lifer”🚐😊

Just stumbled across your channel and had to comment. For what its worth we were in a similar position in 2015, like you at the Perth show trying to work out what to do and what to get. We had travelled across from East to West with a Pajero, a tent and a dog with little to no knowledge about travelling, 4x4s and setups but wanted to continue on with something a little better. We ended up getting a reasonable camper trailer and continued but in those days they had alot of canvas and were very difficult in wet pack-ups. We survived, JUST!!! Moving along near to 10 years later, a camper, 2 caravans, 2-3 cars, another dog and a heap more knowledge we are now 70 series devotees. You cant beat them for travelling as you can get parts anywhere, alot of the work you can do yourself and they are just about indestructible. I would hate to have one of those American trucks when it all starts to get a little older. Anyway for what its worth, and subject to money of course, I dont think you could go past the Troopy with a headspace or similar conversion. They will be good for at least 500k km, you can get a massive range of accessories and go just about anywhere - confidently.

Have you seen the track trailer Tvan. They are a light fully offroad trailer that also has a sit down area which is easily set up. You can get good second hand ones for about $30K. Thanks for your great videos! I am following your example at the moment. Have a 4wd with 270 deg awning, a black wolf tent but also an airvolution swag for short stays or places where you cant get the tent pegs in!

Expedition truck would be epic but I keep coming back to an off-road caravan which free's my 4x4 up for side trips once it's unhitched. Don't have to buy new, there are some mint off-road vans around under 40k if you can handle the dated decor in some of them.

Extra tyres and wear n tear. Insurance ect. That will stop you going where ever you want. My wish truck. Isuzu. FTS 250. 4x4. With a custom pod on the back. 48v power system. Dual winches. A tailgate camper, is another good option, but they are expensive but would probably not need to upgrade the patrol, and still tow a boat. The other option I would suggest is a Track Tvan, second hand are still dear but not as bad as new, but will go anywhere the Patrol will go, and have some inside area for wet weather, but can't tow a boat, but maybe a tinny on the roof of the patrol.

From everything I have read and everyone I have spoken too they have said the ideal minimum is, GVM upgrade Heavy duty clutch Rear track correction Exhaust Tyres Tune Water tank You are right they aren’t all engine mods We said that wrong.
@GanGoz
@GanGoz 9 ай бұрын
@4solitude4S that's garbage, track correction is a scam, only need a clutch if you tune, and I tow with no tune. GVM might be required if you load heavy. I use a removable water bladder. Exhaust is only noise, DPF models you get no power gains. Don't get sucked in to the after market hype

Great video guys! I saw you mentioned slide on campers (might have been the MW Canopy Camper?). We have had a few campers and settled on the Tommy Camper. Really happy with it. I have a few videos on my channel running through it if you wanted to check them out! The biggest downside, as you mentioned, is the weight. We have a GVM upgrade on our Ranger. My dream rig would be a Troopy, but they are so expensive! A Ute and Tommy Camper is a good (more affordable in my opinion) option! Cheers guys, keen to see what you do next! :)

Great conversation starter eh. The old 2020 tax is still around and things are getting more expensive by the day. I reckon the best setup for you guys might be a used slide on camper like the Tommy or Jacksons Carry-Me one. Along with a GVM and GCM upgrade a removeable camper will still allow you to use your ute and camper separately. If you do want a go anywhere affordable trailer, nothing comes close to the BRS Sherpa. Used ones should be reasonable, I reckon. A troopy or a LC79 doesn’t make any sense whatsoever in the current market. If you want to spend that amount of money, you’re better off looking for a Land Rover Perentie 6x6 ambulance body and doing the fit out yourself. You’ll get a permanent 4x4 with selectable 6x6 and a lot more space. That’s if you can find one as those things are just hard to come-by, especially the ambulance body. Whatever you guy’s get I’m really excited to see that and wish the best for the both of you. Cheers.

Looks like you have a td42t, is it a coil cable? If so, you’d be flat out beating it for an all round rig. Live axle, reliable, strong driveline, and if u need can make good power. I’d keep that old girl and base everything off that. Maybe u could go something similar to a patriot trailer with boat on the roof. As for awnings, check out supapeg. Gold Coast business, make awesome awnings, at a good price. I have a 270 of theirs, wich starts at the bullbar, with some valance walls for about $1300. It’s not freestanding, but it takes no time to setup and only weighs 20kg. And they Aussie made. Worth a look. I liked ur video 👍🇦🇺🎯🍻
