Premier Guitar hung with Charlie Starr and Paul Jackson of Blackberry Smoke just a few hours before they blew the roof off of Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The boys shared their recipe for Southern rock tone that’s as thick as grits and gravy. Special thanks to the band’s tech, David “Doc” Oswalt, for details.
Charlie Starr covers vocals and his share of guitar abuse both live and in the studio. Starr splits up riff duties between a modest collection of guitars. His main axe is a battle-scarred 1956 Les Paul Jr. with the original P-90 pickup. The next guitar is an Echopark Downtowner ’55 Gold Custom (nicknamed “Goldie”) loaded with an Echopark ’58 P-90 in the neck and an Echopark Echotron in the bridge. For slide, Starr uses a custom-made T-style guitar with an ornately engraved top that usually lives in open-G tuning. Naturally, Starr has a P-90 in the bridge and a “lipstick” pickup in the neck. A J. Hamilton “Elizabeth” gives Starr some semi-hollow tones and features a pair of humbuckers with matching wooden pickup rings. Finally, a Gibson Custom Shop Southern Rock Tribute 1959 Les Paul rounds out the arsenal. Recently, Starr had the chance to play J.D. Simo’s ’60 Les Paul and, according to Starr, the Southern Rock LP held up comparably.

bassplayersayer "Distance adds depth" is Jimmy Page. Turn up the amp and move the mic further away. It captures the natural reverb in the room. Some people use several mics depending on the room.

brntgrbl Hi, Yes, I'm aware of Jimmy Page's quote, Do you know why many Les Paul Players adjust the pickup so far away from the strings?
@Burnt_Gerbil
@Burnt_Gerbil 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah by doing that it brightens up the tone making it sound more like a telecaster. If the pickups are too close, it can make the guitar sound too dark and less defined. You can also crank up the amp more to make the power tubes work harder.
@bassplayersayer
@bassplayersayer 9 жыл бұрын
OK, Thanks, I figured it was something like that. I have EMG's in my Les Paul, I thought it was something like it makes the magnetic field wider for when you bend the strings. Thanks dude. Rock On.!!!!

bassplayersayer On some pickups, especially the bridge pickup, if the pickup is too far away from the string, it can sound tinny and weak as if it was doing a ventriloquist impression of a voice locked in a box.

Charlie is an excellent guitarist but "The Best"? That may be a stretch. John Osborn, Joe Bonamassa, John Mayor, Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks, Eric Johnson, Mark Knoffler, Albert Lee, Carlos Santana and 1000s more, those are the living best in my opinion and there is simply no comparison whatsoever...Great front man and vocalist though. "I can't say enough about the Gibson Custom Shop..." Yeah... if I were being given Gibson Custom Shop guitars at Epiphone prices, I imagine I wouldn't be able to say enough about it either. The rest of us think they're a tad overpriced for what they do.
@justrockon426
@justrockon426 7 жыл бұрын
but they sell, people buy em at those prices, doesn't make you a better guitar player to play a more expensive guitar, i guess if you make a living playing guitar good for you if you have awesome axe. with dwindling music sales revenue its good that big guys like Gibson give back to those giving visibility to their products in the first place. right? I mean most greats start off with cheap gear and try to get the best gear they could for their ambitions and the sound in their heads. Gibson makes money then pays taxes and skilled crafts people in the USA. I dont know where the hell your from but I would never bash on someone from my country that builds weapons of peace and community. when so many people support country that support war and treats its people like slaves. But another great company is Godin guitars, for the price, workmanship and versatility its utterly underrated. everyone leads their own life right? doesn't force you to obey recommendations of some sort.

Interesting reading these comments. They are attractive to my generation and we do not spend money like the kids do. I was recently working with BB Kings old band for the last four years since his passing. One would think people would be in line to see us but no and it was becoming difficult to even get decent bookings. Covid nailed the coffin down and it is no more. Unless you have had hit records the industry is not kind to older aged bands? That said these guys have done a fantastic job!!!

Like the difference between Trump fans and Biden fans lets select Leonard Skinner or Allman Brothers. The Skins, in my humble opinion, were great top 40 songwriters not musicians (go ahead and shoot me). Why? If you are "white" from the heart of the south you grew up listening to them on the radio and consumed their music, you are what you eat they say. Being born and raised in Chicago and by pure luck meeting the right people there was a sacred electric blues scene where the very best in the country were performing. Let's face it, authentic Black blues has a unique and built in timing and space mechanism. The Allman Brothers incorporated that into there sound. That is the difference in the two bands. The Skins only knew to play on the note, very boring and white, whereas the Bros had that bluesy Black simplicity and timing groove. Have been on several "Pawn Stars" episodes and they had L S perform there for there employee annual party. Finally heard them live and in fact they even rented a vintage Fender Bass from me. Yep, boring...

Nice guy, Charlie, great singer! I will never understand why so many good players use so many effects??? I learned my lesson years ago while using one after another etc w boards. One day at a rehearsal I was having electric issues and so had to unplug my pedal board, and never looked back! To this day, being a decent blues player it's an old Fender tweed, or Marshall 50 watt, and an old Strat or Tele and trust me, that's as good as it gets! As long as you have good hands and a great ear you should never ever use effects, they are a crutch and hide your real sound. Corporate greed sold everyone on them because the profit margins are HUGE. Do yourself a favor and get a great guitar Chord, much better and cheaper than all the hillbilly effects crap. "George L's" are the best?
@dbo4506

Jessi Perkins that’s just not true. Pedals are there to give you options amps and guitars don’t offer. Gives a wide range of sounds not available otherwise. If you want to play the same old stuff that got played 50yrs ago and sound the same then cool you should do that. But if you want to play progressive music and have a bunch of different options then pedals it is. That’s how you push the boundaries of music. Delays, fuzz, boost, a nice reverb if it’s not in your amp. Spacing out and playing a clean delay and reverb combo is killer. Like wise playing to a tweaked out fuzz pedal is equally killer. If you hid behind your effects then that’s on you. Other people can, will and should use them to their potential.

I'm surprised Premier Guitar hasn't fired or at least moved this dude to a different job by now. Just about all of the videos he's in are filled with comments about his lack of professionalism.

brian12ish I imagine he most likely asks questions before a rundown like this. Like "Can I touch your gear?", "Can I ask you about (Blank)", "Can we mention these brands?" But. I could be wrong. Honestly. If someone grabbed at my guitar. It would be a reflex to use physical aggression. Nobody touches my gear. But not all artists are like that. It's like when Keith Richards touched chuck berry's es 335 (345?) and he slugged him in the face. 😆.

Perry does a great job on these interviews. Please keep him as I will continue watching. Some of the others I have passed by because of the awkwardness. Love Blackberry Smoke. Big fan.

Yeah, haha no shit, like that John guy, who’s like 6’8, wears super tight clothes, and says “very cool” every time he opens his mouth. That dude seems super awkward to me, and it does kinda make the shit hard to watch. I mean though, I get it, cause some these people are huge rock stars, I’d definitely be awkward myself if I was interviewing them, but yeah, I totally know what you talking about! This dude did a good job, first time I seen him do one these.

If you KZbin the video "The Four Horsemen -Tired Wings" (and choose the version posted by "jerk1970jp") you'll see the Telecaster that Charlie pulls out at the 3:30 mark shows up in the Four Horsemen video at the 4:04 - 4:05 mark.

I love Charlie and Paul and BBS in general. The shilling for Gibson was a little much, though. Gibson is circling the drain because they have been raping their customer base for years. Sure, if you can plunk down $3-5000 for a custom shop, it’ll be a great guitar. But $1700 for an off the shelf standard won’t rock your socks? Sorry, I have to find a good Asian model and spend my money on the electrics. Superior guitar for half the money.

Awesome, I’ve still got my JCM800 50 watt from the 80’s which I love and I had to have one of those tube rotospheres when they came out, at that time they were one of the best Leslie pedals I’d ever heard…👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I've seen them live, and they've got some type of what looks like a boom mike up on stage near their amps. It's clear plastic, points outward towards the audience, but I've was never close enough to make out a name on it. Tried Google, but couldn't describe it properly, so I've never got an answer. What is it, and what does it do?
