If you’ve perused KZbin for videos dealing with triple rectifiers, 5150s, the cheapest guitars imaginable, or absurd gear listings on eBay and Reverb, you most certainly know Ryan “Fluff” Bruce. The mastermind behind ‪@RiffsAndBeards‬ has amassed over 400K subscribers and nearly 100 million views since starting his channel in 2006. His charm is a mixture of quality, inviting guitar-related content with high-brow information and effective, well-timed low-brow comedy. And, of course, some high-brow goofs, too. On top that, Bruce often leaves his Pacific Northwest video sanctuary to continue chasing his main passion-playing guitar in a band. His current venture is Dragged Under.
The quintet is a Negroni of rock, stirring in equal parts upbeat pop-punk (with anthemic choruses), melodic metalcore moshers, and spine-testing breakdowns. Occasional garnishes include sinister synths, acoustic guitars, and even orchestral overtones. They formed in 2019 from the ashes of Rest, Repose-with carryover members vocalist Anthony Cappocchi and fellow guitarist Josh Wildhorn. Bassist Hans Hessburg and drummer Kalen Anderson filled out the lineup for their 2020 debut, The World Is In Your Way. And since that release, guitarist Sean Rosario has replaced Wildhorn and helped bring their brand-new batch of jams, Upright Animals, together for a June 2022 release.
Ahead of Dragged Under’s headlining show at Nashville’s punk-rock lair the End, on September 1, PG’s Perry Bean jumped onstage to talk shop. “Fluff” showcased his attractive and adaptable Music Man riff cannons, detailed the development of his signature Fishman Fluence humbucker (and who’s voicing he stole for one of his own), described his transition from the Line 6 Helix to Axe-Fx III, and spearheaded a jovial chat that involves a peculiar Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Warlock.

Can you guys please ask modeler users about their signal chains still? Which pedals do they use? How do they run them into their amp models? Etc. I love those parts of the rundowns and not having them with modeler people makes the videos less interesting. A visual walk through could be cool too. Maybe plugging a computer into the model and doing a screen capture so we can see the flow. Just ideas.

@@Ottophil I run two different tube amps into my axe FX (with load boxes) and use them as primary amps, as well as a single amp with an X/Y switch inside the axe fx. I route pedals with different pathways in the axe fx, while also using internal axe fx effects within certain patches. All of this is done with very intricate FX loop routing, and axe fx scenes that basically act as a midi switch with built in FX. If all of that is boring to you, then you aren't the average guitar player. Most of us nerd out on that kind of shit, and it is pivotal in seamless switching during a live situation.

it's really fun watching this because I asked a ton of the same questions when I saw them in Orlando. From the pickups to if he was profile switching for songs to if they prefer having cabs vs monitors for stage noise, to the teal stingray falling face first onto concrete and still being perfectly okay. I would like to be on hallucinogens while looking at that guitar. I love the finish, and it also reminds me of being a kid in the 80s and 90s living in Seattle. The Enchanted Forest was an amusement park under the space needle. They had a motorcycle ride that went in circles. Kinda a boring ride, but each of the bikes had sparkles on them. They looked very cool at night, and that's what that guitar reminds me of.

On the topic of Helix, I saw a muse tribute band using one which made me get a pod go. I then sold this and got a HX stomp and now a year later I am using a Helix Floor with a HX Stomp through an ABY Box which allows me to play guitar and bass at the same time with my band "Half Cut Mind". Works great!

They actually work really well there. Think about it, power amps (which is what plugging into an fx loop is) are typically flat/dull sounding, most of the character of an amp comes from preamp, combined with how bright and harsh a metalzone can be result in a pretty balanced tone

The Metal Zone was the first pedal I bought and it was 100% because it had Metal in the name. Honestly, shame on the music store guy for letting a naive teen waste $100 bucks on it. Should have told me to grab literally any other dirt pedal lol. I wish Fluff would do a video on how to setup a stereo blend like Dustin's setup. I've been trying to do that for years with hardware. The easiest way I managed so far was with a Yamaha THR100HD and a stereo volume/pan pedal like the Ernie Ball Jr. one or the RFX 402P but those were passive which has volume drop at the midway 50/50 position. I eventually found an active pedal, but the Yamaha head just isn't loud enough when running the head in dual head mode. I'm torn between trying it with a Helix vs. Quad Cortex.

The Metal Zone can sound good, just not really for what Guitar Center teens probably want it to do, which is give them an effortless high gain sound that's good. Not happening lmao Kirk Windstein makes great use of a Metal Zone as a boost in front of his Randall heads.
