Huge potential with this instrument, the problem is that no one knows how to use it. Sort of like an unmanned sports car. Sad! In a rock or metal band that would be crazy 🤘🎸🥁🎶🎵🎵🎵📀

*Whoaaah I love this setup!* I grew up playing classic violin but always preferred the sound of a Cello! Nowadays, over 3 decades later, I have two electric NS Design Violins and wish I had picked up playing Cello so I could buy an electric one and transfer over my pedals to the cello , etc.. Love thus

Thanks! NS makes great instruments, I've played on many of their cellos. Lots of possibilities for you with an octave pedal if you want to get down into the cello register! If you're not already aware of him, I'd highly recommend checking out Tracy Silverman- he plays on a custom made 6 string that has low F and C strings and I love the way he utilizes his setup.

Hi, question: I play cello in a pop-band. For Some solo’s I’m trying to work with pedals like distortion on my normal acoustic cello. It’s quiet Some work to go from the signal from my dpa microfone to a distortion effect, without having feedback and stuff. I prefer to have a set up that is as simpel as possible, where I can use my accoustic sound, but sometimes it would be Nice to use an octaver or distortion to spice it up. What is your experience in this? Is it possible to do this live with an accoustic cello? Or would you recommend an electric cello? (I don’t have one). And if so, what brand would you recommend? Kind regards, Fien
@cellohang8 ай бұрын
Hey Fien, DPAs are fantastic mics (I have one myself) but generally running a condenser mic through pedals in a signal chain is not ideal. Have you considered using a pickup on your acoustic cello? Some great options like the Realist or Schertler- this will give you a 1/4” output that will more properly match the impedance of the effects pedals and *should* reduce feedback. That being said, using overdrive/distortion with an acoustic cello can be tricky because it’s already so naturally resonant, so I would tread lightly and keep the gain low. If you really want to go high gain, a solid body electric cello may be the way to go. An octaver however can work just fine with an acoustic cello/pick up setup. You could also do a pick up/DPA blend in which you run your pickup signal chain through the effects and keep the DPA “clean”. This can potentially give you the best of both worlds.

Sounds great! Could I ask how you’re EQing your cello on the preamp as well as on the Recto? I really love the fatness but it sounds like it will still cut when needed, especially with the boosts.
@cellohang4 ай бұрын
Thanks! Generally with EQ I tend cut mids (with both acoustic and electric cellos) and depending on the amp/preamp I may cut or boost lows and highs but never by very much. With the preamp, it's all set pretty neutral but mids are cut a bit. On the Mesa I'm boosting highs just a bit (to "6" or so) and lows are pretty neutral (plenty coming from the instrument itself). I EQ the Rat to make sure that there is enough high end/focus to get that cut. A good compressor might not be a bad idea to have in the mix...
