Aaron Marshall loves guitar. “I make a living every day playing the electric guitar. My identity is built around this thing. I’ve been my own boss since 2015,” he declared in a 2021 PG interview.
Aaron Marshall believes in guitar: “Anyone who thinks the death of the electric guitar is upon us is very out of touch. You can’t hold its head underwater. The electric guitar is iconic. It’s not going anywhere.”
And Aaron Marshall is never satisfied with guitar: “Everything’s perfect. Let’s change it all,” the Intervals visionary joked during this new Rig Rundown. “Everything is different, which is probably the most on-brand thing I can provide. But hopefully this is the beginning of that not being the case.”
The guitar disciple started Intervals back in 2011. He’s been the solo constant member and the band’s musical pilot. He’s put out four riveting, guitar-centric albums to date. And sure, the obvious 6-string influences are found within Intervals’ music, with complementing flavors of prog, metal, djent, and jazz all percolating together. But the ’90s kid has an unabashed love for Top 40 pop and has drawn from acts like NYSYNC, TLC, and Destiny’s Child, too, giving Intervals’ music more bounce, groove, and life. “I’ll challenge myself to put my spin on a chord progression that feels like [TLC’s] ‘No Scrubs,’ but still be Intervals about it. It’s always an experiment between me and the guitar. These sorts of experiments yield new songs.”
Before Intervals’ December ’21 headlining show at Nashville’s Mercy Lounge, prog-rock maestro Marshall reconnected with PG’s Perry Bean to catalog his rig revamp. The ensuing conversation covered the decision to pass on a high-end (but limited) partnership with Mayones for a collaboration with Schecter that aims to bring guitars to everyone across the globe. (“You still have young people that are really interested in music for music’s sake. And there is this wave of online instrumental guitar music that is the best it’s ever been.”) Plus, he meticulously details how he’s testing Neural DSP’s pedalboard powerhouse with a space-encompassing stereo setup that will resonate with fans in every corner of the room.

Aaron is the most down to earth dude on the scene. He genuinely appreciates his fans and is a total geek. I was one of 3 people at a vip meet and greet and he is super easy to talk to. Easily my favorite artist in the progressive scene from a personality standpoint

I like this interview 'cause you're generally interested in what he's saying. Aaron always sounds much better when an interview doesn't have to be a quick one. People shouldn't want an in depth interview with him and want it done quickly (like within 5-10 minutes). With those, he sounds like he's being rushed to answer a lot of questions by the interviewer needing the answers in a very short way. People can get a great interview with Aaron if they don't want a ton of questions answered in a short amount of time or give him enough time to answer a lot of questions. They might think that a 10 minute video is already way too long. If people are wanting to watch an Aaron Marshall interview, they're wanting to hear all he's got to say to for each question. So if the interview is a lot of questions and it's over 10 minutes long (or longer), it doesn't seem that long 'cause it'll end up being a good interview i.m.o. It all depends on the amount of questions an interviewer wants to ask him.

After listening to Aaron speak about the GGD IRs during a Beato vid, I grabbed the Cali Oversized Plugin and couldn't be happier with just an upfront 57 as my main go-to all purpose IR. Nollys IRs really are purpose built and as Aaron explains, too many mic options and blends can sometimes lead to issues playing on stage. He's taken the approach, in a live setting, that instead of adding another mic to counter a frequency issue, we subtract it and I love that ideology because it makes sense. Less is more sometimes. Props to Aaron for doing the work for us. Love Intervals 🤘

With modern multi-fx units like Quad Cortex or Helix, you can set up parallel effects chains that can output different things to different... well, outputs. So in the case of Aaron, he likely sends a signal chain without a cab sim via one output to a power amp and regular cab for his stage volume. A different output with the same signal chain + the IR is given to the front-of-house guy to run it through PA and that's what the audience hears. So to put it simply he doesn't use IRs with the real cabs, but the PA signal has IRs included.

That routing for the NDSP QC sounds like a nightmare. I suspect they offered him some money to switch over from Fractal. He even says himself that they all sound good and Neural approached him. If there weren’t an incentive why change and spend all that time / money getting the new rig to work the way you want it to?

My Kiesel 8-string is also 3 pieces of wood. 1-piece swamp ash body, quarter sawn maple neck, birdseye maple fingerboard. There is a certain resonance. Makes sense to me. The multi laminate thing is because companies didn’t have enough to make a single guitar. It’s plywood essentially.

I have watched a lot of rig rundowns and almost everyone is telling this bs about woods, tone, micro differences with type of paint/paper thin top etc. We expect an experienced opinion from musicians that do their thing professionally for 10-40 years. And all we hear: a bunch of myths and nonsence. There are 2 possible explanations: 1) part of their endorsement is a need to lie about all this; 2) They actually believe in "grandpa's myths" and don't even bother to check it. The only thing I can see as a result: don't ever believe anyone that says something without a proof and check it by yourself. In an era when people are building tons of guitars from everything they see so that these guitars magically sound exactly the same as ultra rare wood combinations - to believe in tonewood is just stupid.. P.S. Neck from roasted dog's poo has more resonance than maple! :D
@vintagepipesnightmares

@@LandsOfDespair absolutely. They don’t understand how an electro magnetic pickup works. People say 60’s rosewood Strats sound different than maple. Yes but because when they went to rosewood they changed the tone caps and they went from black bottom pickups to grey. People are as I say guitarded. More professional players they are more guitarded they are.👍🤝
