RIGGING Sonnie's EYES | Toon Boom Harmony Rigging Tutorial | Part 10

Side Notes: -To duplicate the eye, select all eye elements in the node view, select the 3 line node view menu in the top left corner > nodes > clone selected nodes: drawings only. -For the eyelid handle, it's probably best to make a clone of the eyelid and then only make the overlay visible in the node properties (yellow box) then you can bypass the deformer while still having it attached to the peg. You'd also have to untick the overlay in the eyelid node properties too. This way the deformer won't affect the handle in any way. -You can see I attached 2 more cutters to the pupil for the eyelids masks, however you don't need these and this was a mistake. You can just use one cutter and instead of attaching the cable directly from the eye colour art, attach it from it's last cutter instead. Download link for the rig in the description.

Hello! I believe I may have missed something when duplicating the eye. Attempting to move one pupil moves both in a mirrored fashion, even though it shows that only one is selected. The eyeballs themselves can move independently, however selecting a drawing substitution applies to both and not just one. These tutorials have been fantastic btw! Most clear and concise tutorials on the software I've seen!

Select all the nodes you want to duplicate > go into the node view menu in the top left of the window > select nodes > clone nodes drawings only. Thanks friend!!

Just in case anyone had my same problem- If it's not duplicating the group properly with the paste special again, you can go into node view > nodes > duplicate selected nodes. You can also select them in the node view and duplicate layers in the timeline

The way I do it now is to do a similar thing to your method, but instead of duplicating selected nodes, select 'clone selected nodes, drawings only'. That way any new eye shapes you make will apply to the other eye.

Dear friend I didn't understand the duplication process of the eye. It has so many elements that one gets confused. When I copied the backdrop of the first eye and pasted it special as per your instructions, both of the back drop tables acts on the same eye. there is no other eye.

I did cut it a bit too much during editing but if you slow down playback in the bottom right should be okay.

Hi Sean😃 these videos are fab! Not sure if I’ve missed this but I can’t move my pupils and switch eyes so they both move together, had this been covered, I think I’ve done everything else

Thanks!! If you want pupils and eyes to move together it would be best to set this up as a master controller. This way you have the option to move them separately for winks or certain expressions.

Hey Sean!! thanks for the tutorial series, they're very helpful :D im learning a lot from it. I have a question!! I've got a job that i need to rig a character that have the same eye for both 2 pupils... so i'm having a tuff time. At 2:00 you're creating the composites for layer art and colour art, in my case, could i simply link both pupils to the eye to make that work? hugs from brazil!

Thanks Goivanna. Yeah just do the same thing with what you did with the the other pupil but they will both be cut by the eye colour of 1 eye instead of 2.

so I've been rigging my own character so I put the mask for the eyelid on the underlay layer since I have color on the color layer. How do I mask out hiding the eye the same way? Thank you for these videos I really appreciate it.

If I'm understanding correctly, you can just colour it in the colour you want and use the @5:30 method. If you don't want the eye line there you can use the other method but instead of colouring it green you'd colour it your colour and don't unplug it from the comp, then you would mask the colour of the eyelid to the eye, so there'd be no need for the underlay. Hi. When I begin making the eyelid the line and colour are moving separately, yet in the video you're moving them together as one. How do they connect? 😐

You need to select the button in the tool properties that allows all sub layers to be selected when moving with the transform tool. Looks like some stacked layers.

To duplicate the leg check out the leg vid. Select entire leg > top left menu in node view > clone drawings only.

For my rig it has heterochromic eyes and since the eyes copy each other how do I get them to be two different colors?

They will only share drawing substitutions and not the timing (so if you change one the other won't change) so just make the new colour for one of the eyes and you'll be able to change your drawing subs without affecting the other eye. They will still have both variations of colour available because again they share subs (which will come in handy for the flipped tunraround angles) but just scroll through the drawing subs to display the one you want.
