This was very helpful! I’m picking up a P21 this weekend if all goes as planned. Should be very similar rigging as the P18, and this will make me more comfortable setting it up the first time. Keep the great videos coming!

Congrats! The P-21 is the most versatile boat of the Precision lineup. Be sure to join the “Precision Sailboat Owners” group on Facebook. Lots of resources there and a very fun, helpful community!

Have my new to me 98’ P18 sitting in front yard, first day since I trailered it home that I can step mast and see what I’ve got but….4” snow and high winds in NE Ohio!!! Arghhhh! I have a Petzl Micro-Traxion (one way pulley) from climbing days and will use that attached to the bow pulpit with jib sheet to control mast as I walk it up. Great device if your so inclined check it out!

Interesting…the orange line I use is also from Petzyl. It’s from my old self-rescue (bailout) kit from my firefighter days! 😆

Great video! I have had my eye on this boat for a while. Trying to find information about how long the boat is with the trailer and mast included- goal being to keep this in a garage if possible. Would you happen to know the total length? Thank you!

The boat on the trailer from tip of trailer tongue to end of motor mount (with rudder removed) is 22 ft, 5.5 in long (269.5”). Also requires an 8’x8’ bay door. The 7’5” beam will give a few inches clearance on each side and the bow pulpit will clear the door with the trailer tongue jack wheel crouched in the full down position.

Hi Dave. Curious what type of cotter pins you use for standing rig turnbuckles? How often do you raise and lower your mast per season? I own a 1987 P18 in Indiana. Your videos are the best!

I eliminated all the straight cotter pins on my boat and now use only rings (of various sizes) throughout the boat. In the turnbuckles, I use a ring just big enough to prevent turning. As far as mast-raising, I usually step 5-6 times every season. My boat spends 90 days in a marina and I like to do a pre, mid and post-season trailer sailing trip. The mid-season trip is also a great opportunity for a nice hull cleaning so it’s easier to clean at the end of season haul-out.

Where did you get your mast track gate? I can’t find one anywhere for my p18

hay Dave do you have enough turns on the downhaul ?
@ColoradoSailing
@ColoradoSailing 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I pretty much keep wrapping till there's no line left. I supposed I could trim it...I just don't like the excess line flopping around. I also always make sure the last turn keeps the working end facing down...I don't like the way it looks if it's pointing up! =) The nice thing is that the downhaul doesn't need to be tight...when you raise the sail the main halyard tensions it.

@@ColoradoSailing i would do the same , noticed your cleat on center of the mast I'm tied off to the side think i will change it. is it drilled and taped? Thanks for the videos

@@cbfsoar15 Yes. Pretty easy to install…I added a second horn cleat to the boom for the second reefing line.

Sorry man…wind is a constant when you live at 7,300 ft. Good for sailing…but bad for making outdoor videos! 🌬

Many Thanks for the detailed description of your rig - looks like a great plan to replicate on my boat. I have the same mast raising procedure as yours. Although easy to do solo I do worry about the risk of damage that would result from slipping or dropping the mast while raising it or losing control of it due to excessive lateral movement. Also relying on that single cam cleat to hold the mast while going forward to secure makes me anxious. Saw a great design for a gin pole setup (best ive found) - although takes longer and maybe overkill for such a small mast it might allow safe raising on lowering even while under way to negotiate bridges etc. I'd appreciate your perspective on this if you time! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bafPZHShobGIgaMsi=1F3RuU0puVCnRC8U
Do you need a truck to trailer sail??? --Maybe.
