This explanation is superb i now realize how we need to apply pressure to the back of the ball by applying pressure to the handle of the club via right hand arm elbow and right wrist just in case others have been making the same mistake as i have i have been getting to p6 alright but then hands and arms stall and i hit down on the ball in a hitting down motion which we all have heard hit down on the ball at some point in time i scoop and have a discusting outside to in swing and the ball goes nowhere your explanation has cleard this hugh mistake up for me and i hope my explanation of how i get to p6 and then screw it up might be of help to others putting pressure against a sold object with the clubhead as you recommend was extremely helpful in feeling the pressure you described rather than a hit cant wait to put this knowledge into action at the first possible chance Tks for sharing your incredible knowledge and your time with us who love the game and want to get better

This is Jim Powell speaking. Yes I do find this helpful. I have sought an answer for a long time. Your explanation of applying pressure and holding the wrist angle of the right hand clicked with me. At 75 years old needed this method to increase ball speed. As you know when you get older distance becomes a huge enemy. I am looking forward to working on this.

Adam as a new member of Scratch Golf I found this re-enforced something I have been working on for about three weeks now. I have been working on the feeling of my right elbow moving into the slot and at impact of not having the trail (Right Arm) fully extended at that point and feeling the arm more relaxed. After watching this video and studying your and pro's right wrist being slightly flexed back, I found what has helped me achieve that easier is to feel the bony pad part of the right hand exerting pressure on the left (lead) hand at the bottom of the thumb. Feeling that part of the right hand pushing into the back of the left thumb makes that trail hand bend back more. Many thanks for a great explanation of this move.

Mr. Bazalgette, you’re truly a phenomenal teacher. I wish you were in SoCal so I could spend a few hours in your tutelage. You have no idea how much you have helped me not only understand the mechanics of the golf swing but actually apply it. I hadn’t played golf for many years while in the military after leaving my game with a nasty slice. Went to visit my Dad and we played 9 holes in a 4’some and I was almost always the only one in the middle of the fairway. No practice, just mentally knew what I needed to do to fix my slice thanks to you. Shot a 42 in 9 holes, never broke 90 in my life. You are the man!

I’ve been introduced to the right elbow thing very recently on my own watching Ben Hogan swings. The part that interested me most was the comparison to throwing a ball and how the body/arm move in that process. Since then, I’ve started applying this technique for my irons and most of the time I’m amazed with the results. I want to try it with the driver and excited to see how it goes.

Perfect timing when I saw this video. After literally dozens of years I have never been able to correct the high ball flight and often hitting the ground first. I knew my strike was off but dragging the back of the club and starting the club down with handle down has been mostly what I have tried. I started to experiment a couple of weeks ago with bringing the entire V of my arms forward in the swing and have hit some of the longest and best flighted balls I've ever hit, but I was uncertain and insecure with what I have been working on. Your video today and a video of my own swing confirmed a technique that I believe will improve my game significantly. Your the only coach I watch and I greatly appreciate your videos. I would love to spend a week at a golf camp with you and your staff.

It’s not the elbow position that is key it’s the shaft location relative to the downswing plane and angle of approach. If the shaft is firmly on the correct plane the elbow will by definition pass through the proper “location”. As you watch the swing from behind you will see it comes down , out and forward through impact to low point. Then it travels from low point up and in. You have provided an excellent video which portrays the proper positions and that is much appreciated. Your work is top quality. Cheers. F

Hi Adam I have conclusively found that the activation of the trail elbow to lead the trail hand at the transitional part of the golf swing have worked magic in my swing. Never again will I start my downswing with my hands and wrist. And never again will I deliberately drive my right elbow into my lead side. Thank you for showing us how the pros uses their magic trail elbow in a similar fashion as a quarterback might throw a ball starting with his trail elbow as well. Simply trust the rest of the body to naturally respond to the miracle of the trail elbow.

Thanks Adam. I’ve been watching for a couple of years now and was a paying SGA member for a while. Will probably join up again soon as I’ve plateaued. Reason for my comment today is that although I appreciate all the video of the pro swings you use as comparisons, what I’d really love is if you allowed them to actually hit the ball rather than ending the clip. I realise you’re trying to show a specific point or position or action, but being able to see that very point incorporated into an entire swing and shot would be very beneficial. Thanks.

Thanks for the great video. I struggle more with irons than hybrids, fairway woods or driver. I tend to move the club a bit outside which sometimes means I strike the ball with the inside (near the hosel) which creates a horrible shot. I only do this with irons. I just had a lesson with my pro and he gave me a couple of drills but I have been paying more attention to having my right arm near my body.

Hi Adam, all your videos are wonderful and i appreciate you taking the time always to upload content for us golf lovers. I had a quick question. Do we want to un-cock the wrist just before impact or do we want to hit the ball still with that wrist cocked and un-cock it naturally after impact? TY Louis

Adam, I was literally practicing this today, had a few lessons from a pga coach, he changed my driver set up, (F9 cobra) , took away his advice and added my own thinking on what I was doing wrong so, was on the range today and changed the way I approach my initial stance ( as in the way you explained putting your momentum towards whipping the ball, instead of trying to muscle it) Has made one hell of a difference to my overall distance and accuracy, thanks for your informative and easy explanation of everything to do with the golf swing. Keeping the right elbow in the correct position has a lot to do with how you set it when you grip the club. Look at page 26 in Five Lessons The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. I believe no one takes a close enough look at this page. Note this: 1. Right elbow points to the ground . 2. Forearm is turned so that the palm of the hand is facing up. 3. The wrist is cocked and the club is placed in the fingers. When you do this the right arm and forearm will work correctly and you will come into the ball on the downswing like the third picture on page 106, the correct position to release the right forearm into the ball.

Adam I've been working extremely hard getting right elbow inside & its working really well with my contact divots ect. My 2part question is do you continue with getting elbow inside even with wedges under 100yds under 50yds ect? I've also learned to draw the ball with your help. Also at what yardage point do you no try to draw the ball anymore under 100yds less 50yds ect? Thanks Shawn
@Scratchgolfacademy4 жыл бұрын
Shawn, Regards drawing the ball, with the wedges it's harder to do because of all the loft, so if you draw them it should be minimal. I'd try for much the same right elbow feel on almost all shots. The exception would be small pitches from around the green. Best, Adam

Adam , im an 8 handicap 76 year old golfer . To generate more turn on the takeaway ,i straighten my right leg and move my weight solidly onto my right heel . This generates lots more speed , but im concerned about the inside takeaway you've discussed . I get a great turn and my body turns on the takeaway while my hands stay inline with my arm plane . Is this ok ?

Beau, I'd relate the plane to the club shaft. If (viewed down line) the club is staying near that early in the backswing you're OK. Best, Adam

Well explained thanks Adam, I will work on that. I'm fed up of coming up short of the green. By the way, that looks a stunning golf course you're on, regards from the uk, stuart

Beautiful explanation! I’m left handed but I play golf right handed - and my right elbow action was completely wrong. Now it isn’t!

Every time I hit a stray range ball from a fairway back to the range, I hit a perfect shot. Any iron. Then I tighten up and screw up my real shot at the green. Why? How can I replicate my low pressure shot?

Russell, It’s interference, the conscious mind being to active and anxious during the swing. This is very common, and not so easy to overcome. That said you just have to work on it Best, Adam

Shoulders are still closed at left arm parallel, mine are wide open sooner.

Matt, Most people (I find) are too open with the shoulders, and not enough open with the hips half way down. I hope you are able to make good progress. All the best, Adam

Adam, I really find your lessons very clear and useful. Unfortunately, I find this particular lesson confusing. May be it's just me but it sounds like you're holding back from being absolutely objective about the role of the trail hand. Sorry

Thanks for watching the video. I'd try to focus on shaft lean and squaring the clubface at impact. These are obvious, but work on it, then see what feel you come up with for the trail hand. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
