I think It all depends on the speed of the song. The faster the song the more difficult it becomes to keep that relaxed fluid motion especially if you are flatpicking 1/8 notes for example on a 140 BPM tune.

The touch, how to get to the touch. I’ve watched great right hands for many years ( Tim O’Brien, David Griesman, John Reischman, Mike Compton, Ronnie McCoury, etc) and even though their tone ( all great) differs their right hands stay loose and always relaxed. How do they do it? I don’t really know but this little tip, after trying it for an hour or so, seems to pry open the secret door. Many thanks.
