Right you are, Karina! As a musician, I find this remarkable for several reasons. The arranger has chosen to introduce the piece by playing the melody in the minor key of C major. This immediately creates a somber mood. Soloing the oboe conveys another layer of nostalgic feeling. Then, just before Brooker's vocal starts, the instruments play a perfect Tierce de Picardie, shifting the melody back into the major. Brilliant! The finale has the entire ensemble performing a sus4 to sus2 and resolving into the major. Delicious tension to end a powerhouse arrangement!

I listened to this song 100's of times as a teen in the late 60's. Gary Booker, the singer of Procol Harum sounds even better over 40 years later. This song is a classic and was HUGE back in the day. This performance is a MASTERPIECE, The orchestral and choral arrangements are amazing with so many layers. I have seen this one over 20 times and still get chills that send me back to my younger days. God, I wish I could have been at that concert with such amazing musicians. WOW

I got married late in 1966 and this came out early in 1967 and immediately became my late husband and my very favourite records. Now still love it but brings tears to heart because he is not here to share it with me. Gary Brooks passed away in 2022. Brilliant orchestral recording. Blessings to you from South Africa.

Please don't try to figure out the lyrics, people have been trying for 50 years and they haven't got any closer. It's kind of a snapshot through a couples relationship as if it was a film. The writer was heavily into French film noir at the time. Whatever the answer is it's a journey and it's as beautiful as it was in 1967 - timeless.

Keith Reid's lyrics (poetry, really) have always been somewhat enigmatic and erudite with numerous literary references. The Gary Brooker / Keith Reid collaboration remains unmatched today for sheer musicianship and story telling - with the possible exception of Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish.

Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece. English not Danish. Procol Harum roughly translates as "beyond these things". This was their first hit from 1967. The singer is Gary Brooker and the lyricist Keith Reid. The original recording has been remastered for the 50th anniversary and is well worth checking out. Other notable songs of theirs include Grand Hotel, Homburg, Conquistador, and A Salty Dog.

Thats a stunning performance. And his voice even became better in all theese years. His voice was excellent in 67 though when this song came out. It is based on J.S.Bachs "Air". Brooker said that he tried to play Bachs "air" by heart but did´n remind exactly , so what came out is this beautiful song.

I loved it when you said, "What's there not to like about that that?" A little history: Gary Brooker of the band Procol Harum wrote and first performed this song in 1967 with his six piece band. You can find this version on youtube. His voice is so much better now than it was back then. I had been reading online that the meaning of this song had to do with a sexual encounter gone awry but I disagree totally. Although some of the lines don't make sense to me, it is obvious that the guy is performing before an audience and he's higher than a kite. He's feeling sick and wants to quit but the crowd called out for more. "The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away" is the effects of whatever drug he has taken. "When we called out for another drink, the waiter brought a tray." He's performing in a nightclub and drinks are served on a tray by waitresses. I agree a lot of the song is mish-mash but Gary explained that. He said that he was high when he was writing it and some of the lines just fit the space he was trying to fill so he put it in. He's still a genius in my book. The music omg!!! The orchestra here was not part of the studio recording or in any previous live performances before this one in 2006. I think it was just done here to throw people off that are very familiar with this song. 💖

Holy smokes! Someone is - or was - really high when this story was made up! Gary Brooker did NOT write the lyrics. Repeat: Gary Brooker did NOT write the lyrics. Keith Reid wrote ALL the lyrics to ALL of Procul Harum's songs. He has never said he was high when he wrote the lyrics (maybe inspired when high - but certainly NOT high when he wrote the lyrics). Reid stated quite unequivocally that he is describing or trying to evoke a girl leaves boy story.

Loved your reaction, especially how it sent you into the stratosphere hearing it for the first time. I'm 73, and was a teenager when the original was released in 1967. I loved it then, has always been a favorite of mine, even John Lennon said is was his favorite. This performance, with the full orchestra, chorus, Brooker's amazing voice, and the obligatory Hammond organ brought it to a whole new level. A musical masterpiece for sure. If you read up on the history of this song, you will see that it owes a lot to Bach, believe it or not. The mix of rock and classical and the chord progressions just seem to elicit a profound emotional response.

Procol Harum was an English band. I heard the song, without the orchestra, on the 1967 tour for this song, album, release. I was at Fillmore West in San Francisco with Phil Graham's light show and a multitude of flower children. A psychedelic colored memory that changed my life.

FYI, Procol Harum is Latin for "beyond these things". The members of the group include Gary Brookes (keyboards and lead vocals, Robin Trower on guitar and Keith Reid, although IDK what instrument he plays and if you're watching their performance at a Renaissance Festival in Denmark, having what appears to be the country's symphony, I guess the percussion section has been taken care of, but IDK who is playing the organ, which as you listen the 1st verse is introduced by music from the orchestra. If you listen to the studio single, the organ that begins the 2nd verse is the song's real opening. Since this has been my favorite song since I was a kid and never cared how bad my voice was when I'd hear it on the radio and belt out my...the sound that came from my vocal chords but definately NOT singing...I was 8 or 10yo, so sue me...until I could Google the actual lyrics, I've spent DECADES "singing" the wrong lyrics, but now that I know the true lyrics, I can still belt out my sound with the correct lyrics. I hope, if you for some reason don't like this version you take the extra 15 mins to listen to the studio version.

the lyrics contain a considerable amount of period context. in this case psycodelic way. Mixed emotions than one used to feel on the occasion of a first meeting between a boy and a girl. nervousness expectations, shame, desire to be reciprocated. I don't know if it's still like that today... but at that time it was exactly how we felt. the music brings all these sensations back to those who lived and was young in that time. @@peterd788 These first time reaction videos are getting old. Millions of them on youtube. Every channel is the same thing. Some person trying to convince me that this very popular song that I like, here on earth, they've never heard before. I honestly cannot tell you what I was doing the first time I heard any song, but thousands of people can find a way to do it in front of a camera and electronic equipment. I'm not buying it. I would believe them more if they said that they got colloquial implants recently and now they can hear, and this is their first time hearing this song. But they would also have to give that type of speech that sounds like they used to be deaf. If they spoke normally or if there were thousands of channels of hearing impaired people giving reaction videos, I probably wouldn't believe it. I hope you have a good day.

Procol Harum despite their name are an English rock band. This song was their first, released way back in 1967, it spent six weeks at the top of the UK 🇬🇧 Charts and peaked at No.5 in the USA Billboard 100, it has sold 10 million copies worldwide and there are over 1,000 known cover versions by other artists. The lead vocal and pianist is Gary Brooker, founder of the group. It is a sad thing to report that he passed away in February 2022 😢

"Yksi, kaksi, kolme" is Finnish for "one, to, three" (normally abbreviated to "yks, kaks, kol" when spoken). Finnish is a language belonging to the Finno-Ugrian language group, which has practically nothing in common with Danish (apart from some loanwords from Swedish). Danish is a prime parent language of English, the language you speak yourself every day! Depending on the size of your vocabulary, you would be speaking up to 2000 Danish words that have slipped into English. Incidentally, this has nothing to do with Gary Brooker, who was born in Hackney, London, but just happens to be popular in Denmark. He speaks no Danish apart from a few words like "Tuborg" and "Carlsberg" and on a good day "Danmarks Radios Big Band", which isn't even Danish, really. But he likes to say it.

listening to this brings me tears. i was 13 then in 1967 when i heard this magnificent song sung by lead vocalist Gary Booker (RIP). hearing it again after 39 years gave me goosebumps. wonderful rendition again sad to say Gary Booker passed away last Feb. 19, 2022 at the age of 76. he left us with this beautiful song. btw, PR9COL HARUM means BEYOND LIMITS. they are from Birmingham.

Let me start by saying this is a truly great song. However after reading some of the comments about the song taking us on a great journey I must disagree. The lyrics are not profound at all. The entire song repeats itself over and over. The lyrics that are repeated have no real meaning. If anyone actually reads the lyrics they can see that. Having Said that a song does not necessarily have to have profound lyrics to be great. This is one of my favorite songs. I have listened to it for over 50 years and still love it.
