In Part 1 of this three part mini-series I'm going to talk about the benefit of using UDIMs and how to set up the workflow in preparation for working in Substance Painter.
I will be using a model from concept artist Mark Zhang, you can see some more of his amazing work and buy some of his models here:

I never used this UDIMs workflow. I just recently was being interested in it, for more practical texturing, atleast i thought so, in Substance. But, doesn't this mean that you will later have to use more textures and then increase the render time because more textures loads more memory and is slower to render? What i mean is, and if this is correct, if you would do everything on 1 uv tile, without this multiple udims, you would just use 1 texture for that tile, right? But if we have multiple, like 5-10-15 tiles...you would have more texture tiles later, and given that, you would increase the render time by a heavy time? Does this rings any reason to this topic :) ? Very good content, thanks for that.

As I explained in the 16K graph portion of the video, if you require more resolution for your texture, your file size, as well as memory weight on your renderer will grow exponentially. There are benefits to using UDIMs, and drawbacks as well. I'm going to try to answer your concerns in the next video, but to address your main concern -- increased UDIM tiles or larger resolution single texture files will not necessarily increase your render time, but will increase slightly the time that your render engine needs to prepare to render since more data needs to be sent/cached to either the GPU or CPU in order for it to begin crunching the pixels. However, for most render engines, this is a one time issue, and once that pre-loading/caching is complete it shouldn't affect the rest of the render times.
