@@HGWTPaladin As well he should have been. It is easily one of the best live performances ever, especially since we know it was him singing given the year. Even in the 80s, you had groups lip singing to a track (Alan Jackson made a point to mock that during an award show). Today, it's autotuned, lip singing, etc. One of the reasons I absolutely love the classic music (50s-70s for me); back then, you either had talent or didn't. Bobby had it.

Hundreds of singers have sung this song but none have done it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version was used in the film 'Ghost' and was great but this live version is stupendous. No auto tune or gimmicks just pure talent. He had a cold, his mother was in the audience watching him perform for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. When he hits the high note at the end his face does not contort like other singers' faces when they hit a really high note. He just bites his lip and smiles as if to say 'I nailed it'.

No one has song this song better than the late great 'Bobby Hatfield' of the 'Righteous Brothers' as he did back in 1965 on the 'Andy Williams Show.' This (Live) television performance was one for the ages. Many in the music industry called it the best live television performance ever. The Andy Williams Orchestra and its String Section were to die for. They along with the incomparable voice of Bobby Hatfield made this version of "Unchained Melody" composed by Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret (1955) the best of them all. It has Become the quintessential version of them all.

Bobby Hatfield sang tenor/countertenor which is why he could hit those high notes at the end. I think this performance was better than the studio release (used in the movie Ghost). This song is from a 1950's prison movie called Unchained (which was not very good). It's been covered by many (hundreds?) of singers, but Bobby owns it. If you watch it again, notice how relaxed his jaw is. That cresendo/decresendo he did early in the song takes such fantastic breath control! Just 3 minutes of total perfection!

This song has been used in many, many movies, TV series and commercials. I am sure you have heard parts of it before. Elvis Presly also sang this and had a popular version, but this song is first and foremost Bobby Hatfield's song. He made it famous, and he really owns the song. Curiously it is from a soundtrack written by Alex North... most people don't know that. It was composed for a forgettable movie called "Unchained." Bobby found it, bought it, and made it famous.

This always makes me cry inside, I grew up with this music, and was a music teacher. Twenty years ago in 2003, on my way to work, the car radio was on, they reported that Bobby had died in a hotel room before a performance with Bill, the other Righteous Brother, in Kalamazoo Michigan. I had almost bought tickets to the show, but was too busy to go so didn't. It was only 50 minutes from my house! Imagine having to teach music a bunch of kids who had no idea who these guys were and keep my mouth shut about his death because they could never relate to this great music. When I took them to the Rock and Roll Roll of Fame on a trip they only knew who Elvis and Michael Jackson were.....duh....the dumbing down of American music by the media and the cash register. "What's a Cash register?" they might ask now...oh God....thank goodness for reactors learning about all kinds of music, our only hope.

Bobby Hatfield was gifted with a unique vocal range; he's a contra-tenor and no falseto. He uses his upper head voice, he has complete control of each note (about 20) plus the lovely runs throughout the song. This song was used in the 1990 movie GHOST.

In terms of what people relate to: this was the era of the Vietnam war and many of the people who were sent there knew there was a real chance they might not return. So very relevant. It is also one of the most covered songs of all time. To understand how good this performance really was, you need to see some of the people who are vocal coaches, opera singers, etc describe what is happening. They know how very difficult some of the notes were to produce and how very great Bobbie Hatfield was. As an aside, the Righteous Brothers singing as a duo which they normally did made a song called “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” which became the most played song of the 20th century.

So, The Righteous Brothers are not actually real brothers, but were a singing duo of Bobby Hatfield, whom performs this song alone, and Bill Medley. They were popular in the 60s for a while, and then when their song "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was used in the movie "Top Gun" in the 80s, they became popular again. That's probably their most famous song, and you get to see the two of them perform together, so you should definitely see that one. Then this song was used in the movie "Ghost" in the 90s, which brought them attention again, and this song has definitely been used in other movies and commercials since then. "Soul and Inspiration" is another good song of theirs. They have a handful of good ones that were popular in their time. Bill Medley also did a duet with Jennifer Warnes for the song "I've Had The Time Of My Life", that was specifically written for the movie "Dirty Dancing" in the 80s, and was a big hit at that time. Bobby Hatfield died 20 years ago, so the band is not still a thing. Bill Medley is still alive, i believe, so maybe he still performs, but he's in his 80s now, so I kind of doubt it.

And the name stuck, for there are two men, a duo, who sing, Bobby Hatfield, a tenor, and the other, Bill Medley, a bass and it was because of Bobby Hatfield's rendition of "Unchained Melody" [1970]which was originated by Alex North in 1955 that became the iconic standard Bobby Hatfield owns this song forever.
