NYC certainly does not let you do this legally. I also believe that you should be able to split legally everywhere and that it will ease traffic overall.

@@RightThingMotos Interesting at how around 3:00 there's a cop there who sees you lane splitting and just looks the other way. Are these some kind of traffic cops that don't enforce traffic violations or something? EDIT: 18:58, those are definitely full-fledged NYPD officers that come across you filtering, and they barely look at you I've also heard NYPD ignores lane splitting motorcyclists EXCEPT for the times where they set up these huge roadblocks JUST to catch filtering motorcylists. Scooters are completely exempt from the above and are allowed to filter freely

Filtering is not legal, but sometimes it's necessary. The cops are inconsistent when it comes to pulling people over.

Patt, I used to ride in Fl. For four months I worked in Miami and did filtering from I95 through the palmetto HWY. I always got nervous but did it anyway. I live in AZ now... so close to CA... I hope the gov would let us lane split like the rest of the world does. I believe it is the answer to the ever increasing traffic. If people see this, more will want to ride motorcycles.

It looks like you had a nice comfortable ride in a beautiful city. I didn’t see anything out of line in your lane splitting. There were a couple of spots that looked a little tight and I probably would not have been comfortable going through them, but as long as you know you can make it that’s all that counts. The one thing that really made me nervous is when you’re passing cars on the right either between a curb or parked cars. Between the wall and the cars or the wall and the trucks looked okay, but that curb is nasty if you get pushed into it. And people open doors without looking after they’ve parked. I could be wrong but I believe that is illegal here in California for just that reason. It is illegal for people to open the door on you but it still happens a lot. Anyway that’s my two cents, safe travels.

Thanks for the comment! What you said about riding on the right makes a lot of sense. I do it sometimes just because there's a lot of space there at times but it does feel sketchy at times for sure.

more people should get on two wheels in nyc, would alleviate city traffic, the city hall should have policy incentives so more people would start riding on two wheels, but the gov and nypd are so not friendly towards motorcyclists, they rather have the city congested than having more motorcyslists

I 100% agree. Imagine if 25% of the cars on the road were on motorcycles. The city would feel so much less congested and traffic would flow so much more efficiently. Let's go DeBlasio; make motorcycles great again!

the reality is, american law makers are rather "backwards" towards two wheel transport, and popular attitude and gov policies are very discrimitive against motorcycles and even motorized scooters, and against electric bicycles! think about this, new york state motorcycle lanesplitting is illegal, because those law makers in albany, majority of whom don't have motorcycle endorsement on their licenses, don't know how to ride a motorcycle, may never have even touched a motorcycle, don't know anything about motorcycles, dictate this law. so, in another words, car people write motorcycle laws and motorcyclists don't have any powerful lobby in state capitals to push lanesplit legalization, maybe someday it would happen. anyways, in many ways, america is not the pioneer, or even at the forefront of progress, i can only shrug and continue to lanesplit illegally in nyc while on my bike, i'd say feck the law, just because it is illegal, doesn't necessarily mean it is wrong or unsafe. laws are meant to be updated as times change, sorry for the rant bro. ride safe!

@@hujiannong I think the overwhelming majority of people who don't ride think that motorcycles are terrible and dangerous. They think that by keeping lane splitting illegal it protects not only the riders but the other cars on the road. This is a flawed idea though because when lane splitting the rider can in essence control what is happening behind him and prevent being rear ended. When practiced in a responsible way, lane splitting actually makes the rider safer. I just wish more politicians would recognize or even consider this perspective instead of just ignorantly saying it's too dangerous.

@@RightThingMotos despite all of this, i am hopeful that more states gov will follow california, like utah! which by the way legalized lanesplitting, i think in 2019. progress is always in the making, it's just a matter of when. reference dpsnews.utah.gov/utahs-new-lane-filtering-law/ there are restrictions in terms of utah law for lanesplit, nonetheless, it is a progress of some sort
