Seriously. Is there a better Gilda than Zeani's out there? What a voce! Pianissimis la Milanov would die for. Color, volume, impeccable coloratura, keen sense of the role. Best Caro Nome ever. Tutte le feste al tempio made me cry. What an artist. Do you know if she ever recorded both arias of Il Trovatore. Can't imagine Tacea la notte placida rendered by such a voice.

Nicola Zaccaria makes the perfect Sparafucile he also appear on the best version that I know of 1955 directed by Tulio Seraffin, with Maria Callas, Giuseppe Di Stefano and Tito Gobbi... simply magnificent... thank you for sharing

Primera vez que veo y oigo esta versión, fue una sorpresa muy agradable. Qué hermosa voz que tiene Aldo Protti. Qué bellas puestas se pueden encontrar en décadas pasadas, qué voces, y con menor recurso técnico y de grabación.

Zampighi is more than a competent tenor. His "Questa o quella" is tack on. The voice is fresh and easily produced; the interpretation is light and airy. One does an injustice to most tenors to compare them to Di Stefano who had one of the most beautful tenor voices of the 20th century. At his best few could match him. Protti had an excellent voice with weight and timbre to match. If anything, he sang too aggressively. He would have fared better had he sung more legato.

from what i have heard of protti i do think he should be better known but i dont think of him in the same light as i do say, merrill warren and others of that renown. i do think he has a better voice than gobbi, but isnt as good an actor. today though you'll never find his like. if he might be considered second rate by some in the past i think he would make everyone in this age look fourth at best.

Protti was a very underrated baritone. I am not impressed by the lead tenor singing the Duke. He sounds like he should be singing Borsa to the Duke of say a Giuseppe Di Stefano, THE Duke. I have recordings of Protti as Amonasro and Iago and he does a nice job.

Who sings Duke and who sings Borsa? Seems like the same tenor singing both of them...... Aldo Protti, as always, is magnificent. I have had vocal lessons from him during 1994-95 at Cremona, his voice was amazing till the last months of his life.
