Knowing one of the competitors; she did the race in 2020 on a gravel bike and now rides a full suspension bike with a dropper post. That should tell you enough about what the people without suspension are going to experience... 😳
@ChlorophyllCrusher9 ай бұрын
Sometimes I like to reduce the ‘problem’ to one simple and essential element: pedaling minutes per hour. Full suspension should enable more pedaling minutes per hour.

The drivetrain that I think is totally under represented is the 2x10, dead reliable, can accommodate either gravel doubles (46/30) or mtb (38/28) and either an 11-36 or an 11-40/42. You can accomplish this with bar end shifters, thumb shifters, tiagra, 105,ultegra and dura ace or with the grx 400 brifters. These transmissions are so reliable it seems like an obvious choice for the ultra endurance segment offering tons of range without much of a weight penalty.
@Foxtrottangoabc10 ай бұрын
I built up a mtb hardtail for more longer road, gravel , bridle off road use. And gear ratio wise I did what you mention .36/26 front and 11/40 back . Ideally on another upgrade would like to get a 42 on the back and a 24 on the front , that would be near perfect I reckons . Only thing is I built it up on 27.5 frame which maybe an error for long distance cycling , though lots of gravel bikes on 27.5 still in uk . Last year someone used a triple crank and mentioned it worked great 😅

Can complete it easy enough. No chance at winning with that weight. In reality there's about 3 people with any shot at winning this race. The rest are soon-to-be-retirees with disposable income to blow before they're too old. What those folks ride is mostly irrelevant as they aren't in the race.

I love 29+ as it rides well in sandy/muddy/rocky conditions and the volume allows me to forego front suspension. The one drawback is pavement speed, it rolls much slower than lower volume tires.

Regarding the lone single-speeder: my impression is SS is more popular with North American riders, and with only 4 US and 4 Canadians, that may explain it.

Euro riders catch the racing bug at a very tender age. Everybody remembers their first official race, let aside their first victory. Whether they raced road bikes, MTBs, BMXs even, is irrelevant, once a racer, always a racer. SS rider vs Geared bike rider in the elite category stands no chance, what’s the point of entering a *race* you can’t win ?
