Over time, the US developed it's own accent (after the US Civil War). Barbados may have not developed it's own accent due to the general populace retaining the RP and having a lack of varied accents.

That’s not true. Accents and dialects work together and so structure and pronunciation changes. Standard English and a bajan accent are very different, and unless you speak in a similar dialect you won’t be able to comprehend what the person is sayinf

Personally being from the Caribbean I can attest to how confusing bajans can be. I think even when she exaggerates her accent, it's still understandable. Americans (most) only are accustomed to one thing and they're so close minded they won't even try to understand anything out of their cultural range. if you use your ears efficiently, it's understandable. I'm tired of people having to adjust their damn accent to please ignorant Americans who won't even do much as try to understand instead of saying "you sound funny" to every new accent. pleasseee

I'm from the Caribbean and normally we don't use proper English and we don't pronounce vowels like Americans and British people , so when we do speak proper it sounds like we're trying to have another accent , it kinda pissed me off we don't speak the way you do and and it sounds awkward when we talk to you so you can understand . @@LifeofJhen I get what you're trying to say. But if I were to speak with a British person I may imitate their accent without even realizing it in order to make communication easier. This is called code switching. I only use my patois with my family and close friends or when I'm joking so I speak standard most of the time and when I do I don't even try to copy any accent. I just make sure my words are articulated correctly. People have told me I sound British and others American. It just happens.

I believe among us English speaking Caribbean people, the Bajan accent is the one that stands out at being really different. I was born and raised in the UK to Jamaican parents. I remember as a kid waiting for a bus with my mum and laughing at this guy's accent. My mum then informed me he was a Bajan. @Mila Mila Actually Jamaican patois is changing the way English is spoken among ethnic minorities in London. Not just the Jamaican diaspora in London, but among many different ethnic minorities and even among young white kids - it is called MLE - Multicultural London English. The reason is, Jamaican patois - or phrases from Jamaican patois is considered 'cool'. I don't speak this way, and would not speak this way even if I lived in the UK. Among Jamaicans I speak Jamaican patois, otherwise I speak standard English or Dutch - a language I have learned to speak.
