The female connector in the cable is to connect the receiver into it to extend the length of it, so you can place it in a place where the signal might be better.

These little units are great. The first one I had came as part of a package with my Pi 2, but got lost (thanks to my sister lol) so I ordered one with the back-light option and it really is nice in the dark. I never thought to check if there was a built in microphone though... now I am curious.

Mitzpatrick Fitzsimmons The Mic do not work directly on Windows. Maybe some driver issue. But on Linux it might work
