I have not finished the whole half hour of this discussion. That said, I would suggest you watch some HBCU (Historically Black College and University) marching bands and step lines. It will give you a better understanding. Moreover, you might like to know that BTS employed the Blue Devils as you'll see in the other videos as released as sort of a 'mini-documentary' on KZbin. The other thing, that I find important to point out, is that BTS has never shied away from the American influence in their music. They have actually always championed the American influence, especially in their hiphop and rap. One of the major plusses regarding BTS is the way they went to the USA and learned about the origins of hiphop, as shown in the series American Hustle Life. Therefore the idea that BTS would choose to highlight and spotlight HBCU band performance with the emphasis on dance that is much more reminiscent of HBCU bands is a nod to all the respect they have for Black culture and hip hop. In conclusion, then, I see nothing odd at all with them while being Korean to choose to include American culture in their performance, since they already acknowledge that they incorporate a lot of American culture in their music. Of course, they do modify and synthesize from elements from their own Korean culture, as well, to create something totally unique to them as artists.

Excellent discussions in this video. Bts should be proud of themselves for creating content that brings so many people from all over the world to share ideas /cultures and interpretations. I appreciate you for creating the space for all this to happen. Keep it up everyone !

I really love both the original video (with the analysis) and this discussion one! I am still halfway through the video, but I just wanted to point out that we NEVER actually got a live performance of ON. When BTS returned to Korea, even the music shows were already being filmed without the audience. I always got the feeling that we never really saw mots:7 fully realized in terms of potential, because of the pandemic. So the truth is, we don't even know what a live performance of it would look like. We can of course assume that it would be the same, but in the end there is really no way to know. I still feel sad about this, honestly =(

ah this is such a good point. I still haven't given up hope completely that we'll get a live performance of some of these stages at some point in the future.

I love the discussion that happens in comments in most of your videos because a lot of points are really valid and very minimal with toxic comments (well at least for the first day from uploading). I feel like it’s a safe space to say thoughts ✨

I did not pick up that you didn't realize the Marching Band theme of the song until you said so here. It is just so obvious for those of us here in the US, that I guess we have a blind spot to it. That combined with the fact they used the Blue Devils was such a big topic here.

on the topic of concern about the influence of online content which is the only thing we get now and how it will distance artist from audience during performance in the same way as ON did, because it's made for a camera and not for an eye... in some sence pandemic might break this tendency itself. well, i can't speak on a behalf of a whole industry, being only an army, so keep in mind i mean only bts's future evolvement of artistry and the direction they will choose they miss performing live so much it makes my cry haha istg i hear "we miss army" more often than "good morning" they miss seeing audience, experience audience, communicating and sharing and exchanging with audience the most, and they also know that this connection is what army miss the most too i don't think their first back-to-somewhat-normal comeback would be anything but "we are home" type of feeling in recent interviews they said that MOTS7 comeback was a pressure to show off what they can, to proclaim their name loud, and then BE comeback that was laidback and just warm huggy felt good for all of them. they don't even have choreo for BE songs except Dynamite that was firstly a single and then a BE song what i'm trying to say is that i believe everything will be towards army and for army, for the live audience that will be there for them, they won't exchange it for a camera angles, not now :)

I wanted to point out that I actually clicked subscribe when you cheerfully, graciously opened with admitting that you know nothing about marching band culture. I found you from the ON critique, and I am so looking forward to working my way through all your content. Keep shining your lovely light!

I think I already said this before, but I love these videos of yours because it makes it more like a conversation than one sided seminar. :) You said something about wondering why are they using American elements in their piece and I thought about if I want to open up this conversation, because it is super sensitive and I think one needs to be cautious about how they want to address them, also honestly I'm scared of certain reactions. But here I go. I wanted to say that if you think about rapping and hip hop dance elements, BTS and kpop in general _are_ influenced by American culture and to be more precise, American Black culture. That's why I said I love that they are paying homage. I feel like we do tend to forget sometimes that a lot of elements in music and dance and culture on a global scale are coming from different parts of the planet. And unfortunately we are living in a world where some of these communities which have enriched the art forms that we love and appreciate are themselves marginalized, and are invisible. I don't want to open up a huge discussion about appropriation versus appreciation here, but I really appreciate it when an artist acknowledges where elements in their art form is coming from. So in that sense I don't think they just started using certain American elements, they have always been using certain Black American elements in their work, it's now just a bigger nod to where it's coming from. The other thing you said was very interesting and got me thinking. The one about whether this is a tendency to choreograph more for the camera rather than a live audience and whether it starts taking something away from the connection between the audience and the performance. There are two angels that I'm thinking about it from. One is the fact that since BTS is soooooooo big right now, even when they are touring and performing in a concert, beside maybe few hundreds of people in the very front, the rest are in fact looking at them in the big stage cameras. if they want to see anything beside the general formation. So I'm wondering if it's a trend for them which was born out of necessity. I've been to a BTS concerts and also other concerts, and the magnitude of their stage is just not comparable with the other small groups. I'm not sure if a choreography which would be suited for a crowd of 2000 people necessarily work as well for an audience of 100K people. I think you are right that something in the connection is lost when they are performing for the camera and not for the audience in front of them, but I feel like in the type of performances they do, that connection was already lost. It's nobody's fault, it's just the way it is. They are too big. The other thing that I'm thinking about was that maybe MOTS:7 was an outlier. MOTS:7 was different from their previous promotions in many ways. And I think it was supposed to be different, because I think it was supposed to be the last OT7 comeback before Jin enlists (this is of course a speculation on my part, it might not be true, but the new law to delay the enlistment for another two years was not a thing and they were supposed to go on a huge stadium world tour right after the promotions). I mean no one could predict covid and what it would do to the world of performance. So I am not sure if after pandemic is over, they would still continue doing this kind of choreography. I guess we will see.

Also want to add that KPop and American influences are deeply interconnected. KPop borrows from a lot of specifically Black American genres-hip hop being the most obvious example, so it made a ton of sense to me that the marching band is an influence as well. While the dance may not work for you (that’s cool) I thought it was really beautiful for them to highlight and pay homage to a very recognizably Black musical and dance tradition without trying to alter it too much. It felt like a respectful handling of this cross-cultural borrowing; and I know Black BTS fans who were really happy to see this marching band sound and stepping dance style in a KPop video.

I commented on your last video about how ON felt like BTS and marching band rather than BTS and back up dancers. Reading one of the comments here about HBCU, it's explained why they might have chosen this concept. Just like you, marching band is not a part of my culture and even I did already know what it was, I was unable to connect it with the dance and the choreography as a whole. I'm grateful that I can learn new things everytime I'm watching your videos, either from you or other people comments.

Riki thank you for the nice words. I tend to over talk so MANY of my posts everywhere look like mini novels lol. Coming from education, you write as if you are telling your audience something for the first time. So I try to be thorough while also not making it sound like your audience are idiots. I always think I say too much cause it's hard explaining what my brain wants to say clearly lol. Love love your videos!

the way i totally forgot that you did these videos before commenting on the original at 1am sjkhfd thank you for liking my username ^^; someone else already pointed it out but i also do wonder if bts Did have other plans for a different version of choreo to be performed in front of a live audience but they just haven't had the chance to perform it yet also i definitely think that although the current climate in performance has definitely encouraged innovation in on-camera performance as opposed to live performance, i think many many performers (myself included) have really missed the things that are only possible in a Live in-person performance. And Because of that i wonder if there will be a big revival of live performance especially since the audience and performers alike are Craving that in-person interaction? It kind of makes me think of the worry musicians had when phonographs were invented that they would be out of a job, but we're still here over a century later, and performance is still a thing (although, arguments could be made that less people know how to play instruments and play them for fun in households at parties, but i'm just going in circles at this point haha)

I'm not sure, but I may have figured something out Riki. You mentioned that watching the KM film, you still thought that something was missing, and as did I until it finally hit me just now. I used to actually be a band kid, so I was excited to see marching band being highlighted in a good aspect. However, even I felt something was off, and there were several things, that just has my old director yelling at us. One of the minor things, comes with Jungkooks solo. I love it, but the moment he starts walking it bothers me so much because he is not perfectly centered, but that may be because of how he's moving that he is drifting to one side or another. In a band, you cannot be out of line or else it looks weird and throws off so much. Several of the comments you read mentioned how this is for camera, and not be live or on stage. I think they're only half right. The dance practice shows them being cramped together because THEY ARE cramped together. Marching bands need space, a lot of space. In a normal situation there are probably about three-five foot gaps between each person and when you have a lot of people, its a lot of space required. This is why it does not translate well when done on small stages, such as for music shows. It is not made for music shows. This is made for stadiums, such as the American Football stadiums because they have space to properly perform the dance, and you add another element that is missing completely. I love ON but there was always something off about it, and that is the way it is being filmed. As a former bandkid, it is filled at eye level which leads me to feeling like I'm participating, but I'm not, I am watching it. Its a weird scenario, because I should not being seeing this at eye level. Marching bands are not filled viewed at eye level. Instead they are viewed from above, its what makes them really amazing in the performance. The back up dancers are always moving, but we don't see why. That may be on purpose because ON is probably purposely made this way so all the elements are seen live, in person, at a stadium.

Hi Riki😂🌸 My name is pronounced: SIM(simple)PHI(pee)W(when)’INKOSI NDABA You got everything right except the “ph” sound, which myself and my entire family agree is SUPER IMPRESSIVE because a lot of people who are actually from my country can’t say the whole thing either 😂 I’m South African...it’s a Zulu name that means “given by God”...my mother decided to put 2 names together to make a sentence...so school was fun for me I’m sure you can imagine😬 Anyway really love your videos Riki...I get super excited when I see that you’ve posted something new. I love your name as well💜 I applaud your mother, lol. I chose my children's names by what they mean also, and "given by God" or "gift of the Lord" was a message I wanted them to internalize for life as well as proclaiming to them & the world how precious they are to me. Lol, internally, I'm finding myself responding to your childhood difficulties with maternal protectiveness & consolation, so I hope you are now able to wear your name with pride and confidence, secure in the banner-waving love your mother attached to you💜💜

My main issue with the performance to be honest is that we just don't see much of BTS dancing, focused on them. Taking out the dance break, which while amazing, they only have performed once or twice live, the song is 4 minutes long. They don't dance for about 1.5 minutes during that time. Around 35% of the time BTS doesn't dance. I really REALLY don't like that.
