Rikki Don't Lose That Number - Steely Dan Guitar Run Through

This is a guitar run through of this single released in 1974 by rock/jazz rock group Steely Dan and the opening track from their third album Pretzel Logic.
I decided to play through this one on a strat. I don't have access to all of my instruments or sounds at present but I would likely have used the Strat anyway. I have a number of Pink Floyd songs to record at present but find that Steely Dan songs compliment them in my practice routines - sort of like a yin and yang relationship. I hope you enjoy this video! 👍🏻

It's funny how subtly different players hear how the guitar parts go in this song, yet most versions I see get certain parts exactly the same and other parts that either include the melody, and some which are much more basic versions. It all works, which is the magic of this song I guess.

Fantastic. I’ve been playing this for 40 years, but only the rhythm. Your lead is amazing. I have 3 life changing chords for you to swap in to your Rikki. The first 3 chords, D-A-E replace them with D Mu Major, A Mu Major and E Mu Major. Arpeggiate them as well. On each of the 3 chords, there is always a second note that is the same as the root. Move that repeated note up 2 steps. It’s a stretch, but so so beautiful. That is a Mu major chord. A Steely Dan sound.

Beautiful cover. I was having trouble figuring out one of the fills in the chorus and you nailed it. Thanks so much for posting this.

Always loved this SD title (among many others). The guitar solo by Jeff "Skunk" Baker is really a tricky one. Your cover is just perfect. Congrats !

Your vibrato is just sick! Nevermind for a moment your ability to pull off every nuance in this classic or your generosity to share it, if there is anybody on planet earth with the Paul Kossof vibrato, it's you. I cannot come anywhere close the directional motion required to shake the strings while bending them upwards on the fretboard. This "appears" to be effortless for you. People tell me how good I am when I play out. I come home to learn new songs and see this video, I am then immediately put in my place. I am wondering what picks you use. I use the Fender Thins. Your right hand playing is very similar to mine. I am also wondering what string guages you are using. I currently use 11 guage on my electrics and when I play, my left hand sometimes has to go to war. I'm moving to 10's on my tele soon. I guess this is a long winded Thank-You and and a request for a little info. Thank-You !!!

Thanks very much for your kind comments Vern and thank you for watching, I am glad you enjoyed the video. I tend to play with the Dunlop medium gel picks and sometimes with the jazz tone 207 for a thicker tone. I mainly use 10 gauge strings but have 11s installed on my D'Angelico 👍

This is just so good, perfect in fact...Quick question...for the little tag before you get back to the opening lick between sections; most guys are doing a little D/A/D/A-A/A kind of thing, but it looks like you're throwing an E in there before that last A...or are you just using a different voicing...I can't see your fingers well, but it sounds amazing...???

Thanks I am glad you enjoyed it. There is an A chord with an open high E if it’s the part I think you are referring to.
