I was born in 1960 and I'm a Black woman who has loved music since I was able to hear. Good Music has no race, time or age. I just love great songs and appreciate true artists. Music really does wonders for our souls. I heard this as a teenager. I'm 64 now, and I still love all of my 60's 70's and 80's music.

@@jstnxprsn @Danny Snarski Think about it, what is pop music when you break it down? When this came out in '74 there was some really bad pop music so granted this was considered pop, it was intellectual pop and perfect for a line, some shrooms or a big bong hit. Glad I survived that stretch of my teen years and continued to listen to Steely Dan even when my friends gave me shit about it. Now most of those old friends figured out that Steely Dan was real music and bands like Kiss sucked, by comparison, on their best day:)

Kipp Lennon is the real star here. It is incredibly difficult to do what is essentially an immitation of another singer - without drawing attention to it. Typically it is distracting for the listener who is preoccupied with making comparisons to the original. Not only is he spot-on in his sound, it comes off as a completely natural and effortless performance. Many would assume it was Fagan if listening only.

I couldn’t disagree more. I think he’s trying to sound like fagan and it’s working to his detriment but a vocalist should never try to sound like another, it happens sometimes sure, but it shouldn’t be deliberate. The reason fagans voice works with steely Dan is a mystery. It’s arguably a voice that only he could make work which is what makes the band special. I think this guys sounds similar but doesn’t capture the steely Dan “magic”.

Andrej, you are absolutely correct - These Steely Dan songs are like fine bottles of wine - every one of them is different and special. And the time and effort that went into recording them is legendary. This is an excellent live cover of the song. Every instrument and break in the song is spot on. The lead singer does a great job, but he is only slightly missing the lower vocal range that Fagan has, and Fagan has a tendency to overemphasize the enunciations of the words in areas of the song. Also, during the chorus, Fagan sings the lower harmony and the backup singers sing the higher parts. In this version the lead singer does not go low. So the vocals are missing a little of the bottom of the original version. Great job nonetheless....

Millions of true knowledgeable fans!!!! Most of the younger generation (you included) don't know that most songs today are 30 to 50 years old and have since been remastered/melodies/notes changed while retaining the original words/melody.! People who are knowledgeable in music always laugh at (usually younger and nonmusical) people when they hear a song and say wow that's a great NEW SONG when in fact the song is 30 to 50 years old and has been sung by 4 or 5 people/groups or singers during that time of which became a hit for one or two of the people singing/playing them. It will take time for you to really learn and appreciate music and the history of a song. Do you know how many bands/singers have covered this song?? Do you know the singers, do you know who Skunk Baxter is????? Clueless. Don't worry as you age you will eventually understand far better than you do now.! Enjoy!

As we were growing up it seemed inconceivable that rock n rollers could ever continue on and be relegated than oldie circuit like Chuck Berry and the way Ricky Nelson described it in "Garden Party" Then it seemed we would all haver to turn into country artists because at least they were able to continue on creating as they got older. But somewhere around the time that American Idol was ruining RnR a lot of the older cats said to hell with that here's what real music being played by real musicians sound and yes NOW looks like. Thank God for that too because while we were all looking down at sheet music and fretboards and keyboard keys back in the 60's and 70's the kids all started looking at their cell phones and most never bothered putting in all the hours and hours of hard work that it takes to even be a hack like myself. The thing about it too is with the way their minds are so sharp and operate on such an increased level of speed from years of playing video games some, if they applied themselves could really move the craft even further into the future. My son is a perfect example of that. He started out on The Beatles Rock Band which led him to piano lessons and in a years time his teacher could show him no more as he surpassed her level. I wish I would see more guitar cases in the hands of kids these days and less cell phone activity.

I remember the song hitting the air in 1974. It was the best tune on the radio for a long time. But....with AM radio over GM factory speaker the words get mashed and obliterated so you didn't get the actual lyrics. Even if I did know the real lyrics they would not have much meaning to a teenager. But as you age and accumulate life experience, good & bad & so-so, the lyrics take on a meaning you didn't see before through your young eyes. Most of the rock/pop artists were 10 to 15 years older than me at the time. A 15 yr old just can't relate to the emotional expressions of a 30 yr old being told through music. Now that music quality has drastically changed (equip-wise) its easier to understand the lyrics and the subtlety of the music. Plus 50 years of life experience adds more meaning to the words.

OK, yes you didn't have to look around too hard as there was much less competition and fewer offerings. We also had fewer formats and had the radio as our guide. Our parents said the same thing about our music in the 60's and 70's . However having said that it is also true my kids will listen to the Dan and enjoy them immensely. We do agree on good music . One of my sons works in the studio where Everything Must Go was recorded and he has spent time working with past SD session musicians on their albums. Getting to the point here... there is excellent music out there today ...you just need to open your eyes and your ears. In full disclosure I benefit from having kids in the industry who are also fine Jazz musicians so much of my work is done for me. Still, Steely Dan is my all-time favorite and am now trying to collect their body of work on higher-end MoFi pressings.

Born in 1955 and Dad played Ella, Nat, and Stan Kenton. Mom loved Burt Bacharach and Tijuana Brass. I was always listening. So when I got older I was kinda picky. I liked some complexity. I loved Joni as she grew, I loved Steely Dan cuz they were always changing, too. Cream was innovative in their short time…so many great arrangements. Chris Cross was great. So blessed to be exposed to the best ever!

Holy smoke! This is easily the best cover of the original I've ever heard. I wouldn't have thought a cover this good was even possible, even with Baxter on the team. Wow!!!

Brooklyn Charmers are a wonderful SD covers band. Totally precise and accurate. Check them out! Jeff Baxter here is great because of who he is, not how he is playing - but Brooklyn Charmers are perfection

After watching this video a minimum of 9 times over the last seven years I finally recognized THAT WRISTWATCH ON SKUNKS LEFT HAND!! My father used to work for Hewlett Packard from 1970 to 1986 and THAT is an HP-01!! An unbelievable timepiece that mesmerized me as a kid of the '70s

Nathan is maybe the best bass guitar player in rock. Has played with everyone. Phil Collins, Clapton, Steely Dan and almost anyone you can name. A real talent.

Nathan F. East destroyed the bass on this video!! Listen to Songs for My Father (1965) to hear this original bass line... superb.
