This song kills me. I have raised 4 kids and now I am raising my two granddaughters full time. They are 9 and 10 and it is going on 6 years now. I am 57 and keep going for them. One night while I was tucking them into bed, we were laughing and the oldest look at me and said "Papa I wish you could live forever", the next week I heard this song on the radio going to work, I cried the entire way there. My hope is when they are my age and I am long gone, they will remember me and how much I loved them.

God bless you sir. just this afternoon I heard this song for the first time. I cried and cried. My two 23month old twin daughters and I live together with my mother. She is nana to them and everything to me. April 28th ,2017 my older brother passed away from septis exactly 30 days later my father joined him with God. 30 days later I found out God had blessed me with twin girls. In that 60 days my mother lost her first born son and husband of 50 years. The lord took two home but not until he gave those two miracles to us did my mother and I realize we could live on. I salute u sir for stepping up and I admire u for your value of family. I wish u weren't such a rare man. May God bless u and yours all the days of your lives. Thank you. - Sara

He taught me to fish, to hunt, to be a respectful man, how to treat a lady, I could go on… I wish everyday I could’ve spent more time with him, I was only 15 when he passed and I’ll never forget the phone call. He was a great man, served our country and was a great grandpa I will cry about him til when I have grandkids I’m sure. This song hits home like nothing else ❤️😢

My grandfather taught me everything he had time to. My greatest memories are under the hood of an old truck, fishing, hunting or just side by side on 2 wheels and open country highway. I lost him on September, 1, 2013. I was just a young and dumb teenager and most of the things he taught me never really settled in to much until the past couple years. I was 19 then. Now 26 I understand a lot of what he was always preaching to me. Just wish I would've listened a little closer and a little better. Mechanic/hunting/fishing etc. Stuck with me. But the life lessons never made sense to me till now.

I lost mine last year. Just found out about this song after typing in ''grandfather song''. Needed to hear something, whatever was there. Was lucky to find something this good. My grandpa worked his ass of for 30 years in foundry just to saw his money wasted away by his son. After that, in retirement, he started saving every nickle he possibly could just so he could put me in a home on my own. In the mid time, his wife got killed in a car crash and the man never shed a tear. Stayed strong for family. Was of bad health, had a couple of surgeries and a prostate cancer, but he resisted everything just so he can provide something for me. Couple of years later, after accomplishing his goal and providing a place for us to live in, he had a heart attack and could not resist it. I was there until the end. That night, in hospital, we shook hands and i expected to see him again tomorrow but he knew...he knew... i got a call an hour later. Like i said, he managed to save enough, bought me a place that i live today in with my ungrateful parents who continue to let me down and betray me. That is why i miss him more now than ever before. Thank you for everything. You know i loved you with my whole heart. Still do.

For all those that have commented that their Grandad has died recently or is on the verge, I lost my grandad when I was 11 years old. He was an integral part of my life. He was an engineer and a painter as well as a musician. He taught me how to woodwork, draw, take pictures, build anything on earth. He taught me the beginnings of becoming a man. My biological father was never in the picture so his influence and presence was absolutely invaluable to me. It never gets better it seems... even after 15 years it is still so hard to accept that he's gone. I just visited my grandparents North Carolina home with my wife and my grandma that I grew up in for the last time before it gets sold. Those memories and soothing reminders of what an amazing path he helped to pave for me is what keeps me going every day. My last memory of him was him sitting at the bottom of a hill with his camera and lawn chair at the county fair, cheering me on as I raced my soapbox car that he and I built together down the mountain. I still tear up thinking of just how amazingly supportive and loving he was to me. I was a child birthed by a 17 year old mother out of wedlock in a VERY Catholic family. But they never ever once showed any sort of regret or pity towards me. They strengthened and emboldened me to become the man I am today. This song is a heart wrencher, but it's also a great memory and brings us back so close to the ones we lost. God bless all of you, it will get so much better and remember that they are always there watching you from wherever they have gone. Thanks for reading my story about the best Grandad in the world. I bet all of yours were, too. May they rest in peace and always keep their love in your heart and you'll be just fine

Andrew Thomas , how dare you sir. My grandfather joined the Navy when he was 15. He served his country on the USS Safeguard ARS-25 in the South Pacific as a salvage diver. During the war, it was common for the military to accept any strong, young man that was eager to fight. He fit that bill as a young man that grew up on his family farm in the 30’s in rural Clermont County, OH. He was laid to rest this past May with a full military burial. I understand that ignorance leads to questions but do not disrespect his honor or memory.

I'm 14, today for the first time ever I had the terrifying realization that my grandpa isn't gonna be here forever, the man that taught me how to hunt, the man who gave me my first gun, who I used to sit in the garage with and watch him fix his truck. He is in his 60s right now, and I am petrified of the day I get called into my parents room and told that he is gone. I love my grandpa, so I'm going to enjoy the days I have with him while he's still here.

Always tell your Grandpa you love him and whatever you think is more important than spending time with him, it’s not. Spend every second with him like it’s his last. Because at the end of the day all you’ll have with him is memories. God takes all his angels when it’s their time. My grandpa was 60. I lost my Grandpa about 6 years ago, I still honor him doing what we used to do. spending the morning in peace and quiet drinking coffee and eating a blueberry muffin staring out at the country planning what I needed to get done for the day. RIP to the 82nd Airborne WW2 vet who taught me how to shoot, build houses, Fell trees, and how to drive in his '89 GMC K1500 how to be a man.

My grandpa was the strongest man I’ve ever known I remember his fingers were like railroad spikes, I also remember the day he collapsed in the yard nd holding his hand while he looked at me nd couldn’t speak knowing this was it. When I came home I put his urn in the front seat belt nd picture right with it. Couldn’t leave him or say goodbye nd still can’t. That kinda love and memory is the hardest heartbreak there is.

I didn't have the best relationship with my grandfather. He was a stubborn bastard, drank too much, and always vanished to go deep sea fishing every chance he got.... He died when I was 17. Its been 3 years. And fuck me, I miss him. I wish for the life of me he and grandma were still around. A stange void is left when someone you think isn't in your life that much is completely gone. I wish I could drink my first beer with him. I wish he could have seen me become a mechanic just like him and my dad. I wish, I just wish I could go fishing with him one more time.

My grandpa was my best friend, hunting buddy, and a amazing man who taught me so much about being a man, he went in for open heart surgery when I was 18 i talked to him that morning on the phone and he told me, kid I don't have a good feeling, I insured him it would be okay, I got a call at work that afternoon from my dad saying it didn't look good, I walked out of work and as I pulled into the ranch driveway my neighbor caught me half way down the driveway, and told me he didn't make it 😢 💔 some things in life you never forget, rest in peace grandpa 🙏

I’m 14 and I lost my grandpa a little over a year ago due to brain cancer. He fought so hard to be alive when I turned 13 but a month before my birthday he passed. He was like a dad to me and I miss him everyday. I would spend everyday with him in the hospital. I was his little girl. He was only 62 when he died and he looked like he was in his 30’s he was my best friend. I wish people would have more respect for there grandparents. Most kids don’t really care when there grandparents die but then there are kids who’s lives completely change when there grandparents die. I just want kids my age to know that losing my grandpa was the hardest thing ever. I miss him so much and pray people don’t have to go through what i did at such a young age❤️

Same I recently lost 3 of my loved ones in the past few months, ( in August my papaw George Oliver, September my papaw Richard Carver, and in November my Nana). It's been really hard especially with them passing so close together its still hard, and I would do anything to have them back if I could, but they're home with the Lord, not hurting anyone and I know they are with me every single day even though I can't see them but they are there. I got memories, good memories with each of them that I will cherish forever in my heart. They are watching over me now and one day I will see them again. I wanted to say that I'm so sorry for your loss Dakota Tillott, but remember your grandfather is still with you always and cherish the memories that you shared with him. ~Kamree

I'm 16 and my Pawpaw is 72. I wish my Pawpaw could stay forever. I'm not looking forward to the day he goes home. I'll be bawling to this song after that (even more than I am now). Nobody can ever replace him or the things he has taught me thus far. My Dad has never really been in my life and I look to him like he is. He is a farmer and carpenter he is the strongest yet gentlest man I know and I can't imagine my life without him. He has taught so many things and he has helped make me the person I am today. My Pawpaw is a BIG part of my life and I know he will go home one day but I sure hope it ain't anytime soon.

He might not be holding hand when I walk into my room but, He is somewhere better. He would do anything for his family. Somebody please pray for Robert Comer. He served our Country! He was one of the best men in the world. He is here with me in my heart. I love you, pápá. If your looking at me from above please remember that I love you. When you passed away it felt like The Lord called your name and grabbed you by the hand and then it felt like a wall split us apart but, I will always find a way back to you.

I’ve got a 6 year old grandson. He’s my pride and joy. He is up here every morning like clockwork, when he ain’t at school, he runs up the hill to my house. We go fishing anytime he wants to. I want to be to him what I couldn’t be to my sons. Worked evening shift from 3 to midnight, 6 days a week in a WV underground coal mine. To say I missed a lot is an understatement. I know one day the Lord will call me home. I just hate to leave that boy.
