PACIFIC OCEAN (July 12, 2022) Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2022 military forces from Australia, Canada, Malaysia and the U.S., fired upon and sunk the decommissioned ex-USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60), July 12, during a sinking exercise (SINKEX) to gain proficiency in tactics, targeting and live firing against a surface target at sea. SINKEX vessels are put through a certified cleaning process, including removing all environmentally harmful material including trash, floatable material, mercury, fluorocarbon and petroleum. Twenty-six nations, 38 ships, four submarines, more than 170 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 29-Aug 4 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world’s largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world’s oceans. RIMPAC 2022 is the 29th exercise in the series that began in 1971. (Royal Canadian Navy video by Alex Kaldeway)

@Scott Munczenski 100% degree Scott. I only did 6 and a 1/2 years. man that boat moved.. Our captain Drennan Would have a lot of fun with the guys. Push the limits sometimes even getting close to 37 knots. Depending on the seas. I came out as a PO1 E6. I couldn't make a career out of it way too much bullshit at the end. But I do agree with you sir.

I remember the Rodney M Davis from my deployment to the Persian Gulf in 1988, escorting tankers through the Straits of Hormuz during Operation Ernest Will. I never served on her but I remember an incident with one of her SH-60 helicopters. The helicopter was descending at night and it hit the water. I remember the polit telling me that the water was eye level to him outside the door meaning it was semi submerged at least 4 or 5 feet in the water. The helicopter had enough power to pull itself out of the water and start the flight back to the ship. EVERY frame from behind the pilots seat was cracked or broken and the fuselage starting behind the pilots seat was bent about 13 inches to the left yet the helo still managed to get them back to the ship safely. Looking at it on a flatbed truck in Bahrain I couldn't believe that the helicopter could possible fly in that condition.

RIP RMD. They got both mine earlier. USS McClusky and USS Rentz. While they weren't the most technically advanced ships, they were homes to many. It's sad to see a part of your life destroyed.

RMD was home for 4 years and 26 days. I was there when she shifted homeport from Yokosuka to Everett. While it's sad to see her go, she died a warrior's death. I'd rather see her sent to Valhalla via Davy Jones' locker than be sold or given to a country that hates us.

I must ask before using the ship for RIMPAC live fire, all equipment and materials(that can be) are removed for recycling? Now I know that all types of oils, greases, and fuel are removed and thoroughly scrubbed from the tanks

There is a video somewhere of the USS Worden CG-18 being sunk for target practice. I went to a crew reunion in Louisville 2007 and there were some crew from Vietnam that had been on it when it was hit by a friendly fire missile.

The initiation is not a requirement. Be within standards, CO promotion endorsement and leadership academy which is mostly some fat chief reading off a PowerPoint. Don't be fooled by the so called u have to do this. If they say that to u or discriminate u in any way, go to legal, do an IG. As long as the chiefs mess is using a federal institution, they cannot prevent u from meetings, etc. Heck, the association needs permission from the base CO to operate and.... not part nor endorsed by the Navy anyways. Know your rights and exercise them. And u will get pinned when u get paid... unless u get frocked before that, only the CO can retain frocking and if he does, what was the reason? If u met the standard, they cannot prevent frocking. Get legal involved, you will win. Once you are pinned as a chief, never ever be part of a DRB, not part of the legal system nor required... sometimes those idiots in a DRB cause more harm than anything. If u ever in a DRB, ask for a lawyer and keep your mouth shut, chances are, command has nothing on u. Stay in the DRB until 1630 and walk out at 1631, only the CO can secure your regular liberty, but ask the senior person first if he or she is securing your liberty. Unless they have a letter from the CO, they can't cause it isn't punitive. Know your rights....

Every time I see an Orville Hazard Perry Class FF destroyed, I wonder why the Navy quit making them? One of the best most versatile tin cans in USN history. So sad to see them end up this way. 😢🥺😠

They just don’t have the tonnage to carry the equipment they need to stay competitive. I’m hoping the Constellations keep the OHP’s legacy going while improving on their downsides.

It was believed we no longer needed them. The conventional thinking in the mid-90s was that America's need for ASW died with the USSR. Even if we did need them, however, the OHPs were getting old. Too old to warrant keeping them around. Had we been prudent about it and recognized the PLAN as a viable threat, we'd already have a full fleet of Constellations to replace them.

I appreciate the training involved during SINKEX evolutions. Yet as a DD-963 Class plank owner, it breaks my heart to see these ships that were our homes, our fortresses, meet such a sad fate. Just a few vids on my TL before this, there was a vid about the USS Spruance (DD-963), with pics showing her underway and in port. When it got to the sinking part, I shook my head, refusing to watch it, and exited.

Yep. I served on DD-971, USS David R Ray, also sunk and there is a KZbin video. Hard to watch.

It’s a sad fate to see these beautiful ships go down like this. Though I’d say it’s probably a better, proper sendoff than seeing the ship withering away in a scrapyard.

@@Dave_Outside Understand. Very glad there's not, to my knowledge, the sinking of mine, which I found out about a few years after, while exchanging email with my DIVO. Absolutely no way I would watch it

Still one of the worst traditions by far. What a waste. I know it's not financially responsible to keep them in service but at least keeping them in a reserve on the off chance you need them if your main supply is running low, you'd rather have this than nothing.
@gnranger

I don’t think you understand how costly it it is just to upkeep a reserve fleet.
@sirboomsalot4902
@sirboomsalot4902 Жыл бұрын
1. It’s very expensive to keep even a reserve fleet going. 2. While very good designs, the Perry’s are ultimately obsolete especially in terms of their armament. And you can’t just slap an AEGIS system on them either. Sending them into combat with someone like China would be about as effective as Russias T-62s are in Ukraine. The resources are being better spent on the new Constellation-class frigates. 3. Sinking these ships provides invaluable Intel on both the effectiveness of our weapons and how to design our new ships to survive them.
