This is immediately accessible music and great fun, especially the 'bouncy' finale. Rimsky-Korsakov wrote it in 1876 for a competition which it inexplicably failed to win, reporting that the jury "disregarded my Quintet entirely". To add to Rimsky's disappointment, "Balakirev was quite displeased that I had taken part in the competition." (A trio by Napravnik won first prize).

Good to finally hear more of his chamber music. The piano concerto won't ever come back into the repertoire .how many concerti are in c sharp min. There must be violin and cello concerti by him .late romanticismso not to my taste as it was when I was there n highschool and for decades.ligeti,Per Norgard,Carter,Boulez etc. make old stuff sound cutesy and formula ridden !

This is NOT a piano quintet - that form is for piano & 4 stringed instruments - this is, properly, the: Quintet in Bb, for flute, clarinet, french horn, bassoon, and piano - if you can change your title that would help. Thanks.

"Piano Quintet" doesn't specify instrumentation. Such a descriptor could apply to any ensemble of five instruments that includes piano; there is no rule that it must refer to piano and strings. This is "Quintet for Piano and Winds" or simply "Piano Quintet."
