This song really hits me in the most delicate spot. My mom is the root of all of my trauma and I tried over and over again to communicate with her that what she did to me was not okay. She is homophobic and narcissistic. Unfortunately I had to accept that she will never apologize to me. Well, at least not any time soon. I'm not going to hope that she finally apologizes to me on her deathbed.
@malum94782 жыл бұрын
unfortunately, the bad part about family is that you don't choose them; what you get is what you got. the lesson is that, whoever you wind up bein family to in the future--chosen or biological--be the best family you're capable of being. and as someone who had such a bad falling out with my mother that we didn't speak for a year, and who definitely sabotaged my upbringing in several ways and a slew of other shit: while you don't have to and she well may not even deserve it, consider givin your old lady a break if she does apologize. a lot of our old folks are fucked up from their own bullshit ass upbringings.

So sorry you went through that but we are never alone in dysfunctional upbringing. I also have trauma from my upbringing and my relationship with both of my parents were never great b/c they never wanted to change or get the help they needed to get past their own generational trauma and to function the way best needed from their own children rather than the other way around😢

Saw Rina live this past Thursday and didn't hear this song before and it wrecked me. I was mostly raised by my single Japanese mother and was disowned 5 years ago. I understand why she is the way she is, she grew up in 50s America. She had me in her mid 40s and even before she had me she did so much. I am her youngest child. She was a first in many things, first Asian American woman to earn a Music masters in Washington and one of the first Asian American teachers and she worked full time and several side jobs to make ends meet. She did everything she could and I know she wanted what's best for me. She reached out to me this past year and said she missed how we used to be and said I should seek God and conversion therapy and it's just...she's in her 70s now. I know she doesn't have all that much time left but at the same time...yeah. My mother wasn't an immigrant, she's second generation but enough of this related to me that I was weeping when I heard this song.

Shes given so many LGBT children closure; who may have never gotten it from their parents, but wanted it so desperately. A lot of times people who hate the idea of LGBT: their hatred dissipates simply by knowing or being around LGBT people. A lot of times parents try to change their kids, in fear of what other people will say or do to them. But in the end: they are protecting their child from being themselves. Thats a message we can ALL relate to. But this story is clearly about immigrants, who may come from places where it is even MORE dangerous to be LGBT/yourself. A very important narrative that isnt often addressed
