@@ew8550 lmao. why? she can't even get over 300k subscribers, and none of her songs have been hits, her videos struggle view wise. Her 'CULTURAL RESET~!!!11' performance on Kimmel or Fallon or whatever doesn't even have a million views yet. Face it, y'all overhyped the shit out of Rina and nobody is here for her yet. I love the song, and the album is great, but her fans are obnoxious and very arrogant far too soon and that in the end will do more bad than good for her career.

"XS is a song that mocks capitalism in a sinking world. Given that we all know global climate change is accelerating and human extinction is a very real possibility within our lifetime it seemed hilarious to me that brands were still coming out with new makeup palettes every month and public figures were doing a gigantic house tour of their gated property in Calabasas in the same week as doing a ‘sad about Australian wild fires’ Instagram post. I mean I’m guilty of turning a blind eye too, because otherwise it makes me depressed. We’re all hypocrites because we are all capitalists, and it’s a trap that I don’t see us getting out of. I wanted to reflect the chaos of this post-truth climate change denying world in the metal guitar stabs that flare up like an underlying zit between the 2000s R&B beat that reminds you of a time when everything was alright." - Rina

Well the animal agricultural industries are hugely subsidised by the government through taxpayer money. Animal agriculture contributes more to the environment than all if the transport industries combined. Subsidies are the opposite of capitalism. Without subsidies, in a capitalistic economy, animal agriculture industries would be a fraction of the size. We'd naturally eat more resource efficient food. Capitalism isn't the enemy, your murderous diet is.

The video shows products being sold and advertised on infomercials, played up as if they are important or even necessary to buy. Rina plays a character that is trying to get the products sold alongside others. There is a moment in which you can see her hesitate while dancing with the product, looking at the other dancers, possibly feeling doubts about the situation? Later, the dancers seem to turn on her and pour the product over her, and she begins to spark as if she is a damaged machine. I interpreted this as possibly reflecting how people are treated like machines under capitalism, constantly having to push themselves to their limits or step on others to find "success" or to be worthy of needed resources (money). It is later revealed that the products are being created by draining a creature (that is also locked up and kept away from the eyes of the media) of its own bodily fluids. This can be symbolic of the ways capitalism always seeks to maximize profits by any means necessary. By not giving workers full wages for their labour and by withholding rights/resources from people to a certain degree (housing, healthcare, food, water), wealthy people keep control over everyone else. Also, this part of the music video can be reflective of how resources are extracted without care for the source (like how irl there are like 100 CEOs literally responsible for the majority of climate change, but they don't bother to stop killing the earth because they are powerful and want EXCESSes of money). We are sold products that are often being created/extracted by workers working in unfair conditions, literally drained of their energy. The workers that do the most work don't actually make the most money under this system, as most of that money goes to rich CEOs who just want to stay at the top of the hierarchy any way they can. The song is basically about how under capitalism, rich people hoard wealth and power while exploiting everyone/everything else. XS = excess. Since rina said the song was about capitalism, this is how i interpreted the music video. Super dark and so well made!! Thank you for making another incredible mv, Rina! :)

i think also theres some critique of consumer culture, if not in the video then in the song itself. under consumerist capitalism, we define ourselves by the material possessions we own and are obsessed with accruing and consuming more and more material possessions. happiness under consumer capitalism is defined by the surplus material wealth you possess.
@roymantic18334 жыл бұрын
cmon critical analysis
@redrooster34204 жыл бұрын
@@gidiup I think the video can compliment this point too! Through both propaganda and advertising, capitalism incentivizes us to want excess, even when we really don't need it. A random thing this made me think of is that we are literally sold fake problems for us to spend money "fixing". For example, many people just assume that things like stretch marks are bad and wrong, but there is literally nothing inherently wrong or bad about them... Certain beauty standards were literally developed in boardrooms as a marketing strategy to make us BUY more unnecessary products. Treating normal signs of development/living as UNSIGHTLY is a marketing ploy. Profit comes pretty easy when they can first sell you the lies that make you insecure enough to try to hide signs of being human. :/ At one point in the video, during the informercial part, the product was advertised with the words "younger looking skin" and I feel like that can be an example of this phenomenon. Selling unnecessary things for exorbitant amounts of money while exploiting the sources of the labour required to create those very products.... The only thing Capitalism is good at is keeping rich people greedy and poor people exhausted. Gotta love that "profit-maximizing" cycle. :(

The production of the video totally achieves the purpose and concept of the song, the advertisement scenes are so jolly, visually pleasing, I can't help but laugh when I see them, on contrary the "behind scenes" or the reality, seems perturbating, I just want to look away and... isn't that how we live? Ignoring reality cause we just don't like it and don't want to see it, live in a shallow world that conveys slavery, pain and unfairness but put some make up on and want a little bit more, we live in excess
@marystratford75494 жыл бұрын
I don't thing a lot of people are deliberately ignoring reality--more like they either don't think about it or they don't have enough information to come to the realization of just how unfair the world is. There's also the just world phenomenon in psychology, which states that people have a tendency to believe the world is just and victims of tragedy/violence/violation/exploitation somehow 'deserved' it, especially if they or their group benefits from the situation at hand.
